In case you haven't tried it

www.thekitchn.com/marcella-hazans-amazing-4ingre-144538

It's basically 1 tin of tomatoes cooked on a medium heat with half an onion and 5 tablespoons of butter for 45 minutes or so. A bit of stirring now and then.

It's so so good. Really rich and delicious. We didn't have anything else with it, just parmesan and pasta. Yum.

Thanks titsywoo

So do people use normal tinned tomatoes or peeled plum tomatoes as the recipe says?

I only usually buy tinned tomatoes.

I used a tin of peeled plum tomatoes, they broke up easily with a wooden spoon while stirring

SarahBeeney · 11/06/2019 10:11

Thanks! Going to make it now.

Made this last night with two tins of tomato, takes about twice the time to cook if you do that. I know this sounds obvious but it wasn't at the time to me so just fyi

Made this yesterday and it was delicious. I'm amazed it doesn't have garlic in it. It really tasted authentic to me.

I used two tins of peeled plum tomatoes (napolina) and cooked it for about an hour

I’ve just tried this recipe thanks to recommendations on Mumsnet. It’s delicious but omg - five tablespoons of butter! And I ate the whole portion myself with a big bowl of pasta Blush I don’t think my arteries will be thanking me for this!

Reviving this old thread to ask a question. Any cooks about? Grin

I am going to make this but will need enough for 6 people. So, if I double the amount of tomato’s and butter, does that mean I will need to put two onions face down or still just one ? (Apologies for what is probably a really silly question, I’m not the most experienced cook Blush I read all the comments on her recipe and people only ever refer to “the onion”

KTD27 · 05/03/2021 16:35

@CristalCarrington I’d probably use a bigger onion but it won’t make a huge difference ( i wouldn’t have thought) if you used two small ones. Whenever I do it I just Chuck the onion in. It’s a very forgiving recipe as long as you have the butter Grin

CristalCarrington · 09/03/2021 11:50

@KTD27 - Thank you! I used two small ones. Everyone loved it, even my extremely picky child. It was so easy, I will definitely make it again

KTD27 · 09/03/2021 17:24

I love it!! So glad your kids liked it. Becoming harder and harder for me to find things mine will eat without complaint so I feel you Grin
