Co-sleeping. Safest way to stop the baby rolling out of bed?

Because he learned to roll and less than 48 hours later he rolled out of bed in the middle of the night. Despite me putting him in the middle of our super king size bed.

I got a pool noodle but its not quite the ticket. It moves and slips down.

I ordered - then cancelled - a bed guard because I distinctly remember my first DC falling down and sleeping between the bed guard and the bed. He was 18 months old and I'm lucky he didn't suffocate.

DS3 is only 5 months.

There's long bits of foam that go under the sheet but if he rolled over and face planted couldn't they suffocate him?

With DS2 I had the mattress on the floor but can't do that for a few months when we move because there's absolutely nowhere to store the bed.

What do I do?

I co-sleep with my 9 month old and bought the foam things that go under the sheet, after she fell out twice. I'm comfortable with the risk as she's very mobile so if she got squished against it she would damn well let me know!!

I’ve taken the side off the cot and strappedit to the bed with bungee cords In the gap I’ve stuffed rolled up bath sheets.
When we’re on holiday I don’t worry about ds falling out of bed as he seems to land on his feet!
The other way is to put the cot mattress on the floor next to the bed so when he rolls out he lands on it.

AppropriateAdult · 28/05/2019 22:12

We just took one side off an ordinary Ikea cot - you don't need to buy a specific sidecar crib. Very safe and makes bed much wider. Tightly rolled towels in any gaps.

The ridiculously expensive Snuzpod is currently on its second run of acting as a bed guard! But any cot thatys base will go flush with your mattress that you can take the side down will do.

Teddybear45 · 28/05/2019 22:15

You could put him in a sleepy head in the middle of the bed. Would stop the rolling.

SleeplessWB · 28/05/2019 22:17

I used a Purflo nest which worked well. They can be next to you but no risk of rolling on them, or them falling out. Size says up to 6 months by DD2 just stayed in it with legs over the end until over a year old.

RaptorWhiskers · 28/05/2019 22:17

I’d put the mattress on the floor. If you can’t store the bed frame, either sell it or hire a storage locker, or ask a family member to store it. All of the other solutions seem too risky to me.

senttomefromheaven · 28/05/2019 22:19

@Teddybear45 was away to suggest sleepyhead as well. The best things ever 😀

HappyPunky · 28/05/2019 22:22

Have you got one of those breast feeding cushions that are C shaped and very firm? I still use mine next to DD to block her in. I always put it shoulder level although she's old enough for it not to matter but the shape and firmness of it means she can't push it or roll over it in her sleep.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 29/05/2019 07:32

Ok so I can't use a bed side crib because he's 10kg and it's only up to 9.
Plus they are shorter than I realised.

I can't use a sleepyhead because he falls asleep on the boob most of the time, then I ninja move my arm out and ninja roll away.
I'm not sure that would work with a SH?

We are pushing the bed up against the wall tonight and I think I'm just going to have to buy another thing to go under the sheet.

Although I love the idea of cot side and bungies. That's clever.

We have no cot side and would have to buy a whole cot. I will ask DH tonight about that.

Thanks for the ideas, brilliant.

Should do. Both nephews were breastfed and fell on top of my sister / sil. If the SH is next to you then you can just shuffle them on (you need the larger one).

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 29/05/2019 08:43

I wouldn't be able to shuffle him on.
He's massive, and I would have to lift him over the edge of it.

He had a purflo when he was tiny and that was a pain. It would be even harder now, I think.
It's a lot of money as well.

You could put him in a cot...

Bumbalaya · 29/05/2019 08:47

CHICCO Next to me cot was a life saver, i could even flop one boob into the cot :)

tumtitum · 29/05/2019 09:44

@Itellpeopletogoogleit If only it was that easy hey!! 😂

Lulu2106 · 29/05/2019 10:07

You could sleep the other way in the bed, so the baby is on the side of the headboard (using the headboard as a bed guard) that way he can't roll anywhere and if he does there's no gaps only a headboard. You might have to curl up so your feet don't fall off the edge of the bed but you just sleep slightly diagonally if you know what I mean?? That's how I slept with my babies. Worked perfectly.

Pinkvoid · 29/05/2019 10:12

We use a sleepyhead.

AndOutComeTheBoobs · 29/05/2019 10:20

You could put him in a cot...

You could RTFT....

Lulu that actually makes sense....!

We had a cot that one side could come off and pushed right up against the bed, it was the same level as the mattress. He didn't sleep in it of course, but had he have rolled he'd have gone into that! We sometimes conslept in the spare room, that bed was up against the wall.

Lulu2106 · 29/05/2019 10:40

Yea it just seemed a better option as opposed to having extras in the bed that could still be dangerous. Obviously slightly uncomfortable for you depending on your height, but I am short so didn't make much difference to me! Hope it works for you.

Adviceplease1234 · 29/05/2019 10:43

My daughter’s cot is exactly the same height as our bed so did what other people have suggested and removed the side and attached it to our bed. It works really well as she can’t fall out and the bed feels so much bigger. We never really got on with the next to me as I couldn’t breastfeed laying down with it as it’s a different height. As your son is 5 months, I don’t think a next to me would work anyway as he will soon be able to pull himself up and potentially fall over the edge.

tellup · 29/05/2019 10:45

I have a chicco next to me pushed up against the side of the bed

PlinkPlink · 29/05/2019 11:51

My HV suggested putting a moses basket beside the bed, wedged up against it so DS could either roll into me or roll into the basket.

Worked a treat.

Itellpeopletogoogleit · 29/05/2019 12:26

If it's risky and dangerous then why do it at all?
