Bands from the 90s, 80s and even 70s reforming and flogging themselves around on tours

What do you think of this?

I am late middle aged and I hate thoughtless/everyday ageism as much as anyone, but honestly I'm quite dumbfounded at the number of old rockers who still can't quite quit the fame game.

Think of the bands who have regrouped in recent years (even though they hated each other when they split). Or the solo artists who think they can have a career without the rest of their group. I find them all a tiny bit pitiful tbh.

The Spice Girls?! Come on, have a bit of dignity. You made gazillions at the time, can't you be content with that?

The Spice Girls are not 'rockers'

RevealTheLegend · 28/05/2019 21:40

Disregarding the spice girls, (cos they’re British) it is a known phenomenon in the US. The poor sods dont have healthcare insurance, they get ill and need the money.

i feel quite sorry for them. It’s a hard way to try to earn a living

dustarr73 · 28/05/2019 21:42

Mostly cause they couldnt make it on their own.Thats usually what it boils down to.

You know what I mean though sackrifice. Don't you? Or are you just being petty?

It seems to be becoming a known phenomenon in the UK too. Off the top of my head:

Take That, Spandau Ballet, Bananarama, Steps, Ronan Keating's lot, Spice Girls. Come on!

I can't remember who it was but I was listening to a female duo being interviewed on the radio recently who clearly hated each other's guts, but were willing to swallow that for the ££££s and were flogging themselves around on tour again.

Shakespeare's Sister?

Touring is where the money is these days. That and having your song picked up for an ad.
No such thing as album sales anymore and royalties aren't worth much

Myyearmytime · 28/05/2019 22:06

The 60s and 70s bands have been doing it for years and years it just has not been on your radar.
The 60s bands are dieing out . So 90s bands are taking over .
With naughties bands just getting their act together.
This is their job and they love it and money .

Langrish · 28/05/2019 22:07

They’ve spent all of their money and their pensions need a boost. Give em a break, they’re not hurting anyone, well, no-one who hasn’t paid anyway Grin

Usuallyinthemiddle · 28/05/2019 22:08

Why not? Nobody forces ticket sales! Somebody is willing to pay to see them. I'm not sure of the problem.

Cookit · 28/05/2019 22:10

Actual legitimate aging rock bands seem less pathetic for touring somehow. Mediocre pop bands like Boyzone, Spice Girls - I find it a bit bizarre. Some of them need the money but not all of them. So why embarrass themselves like it?
So the Spice Girls ... Mel B clearly desperately needs he touring money but the others don’t and they seemed to have quite nice lives .. so why do it?

TemporaryPermanent · 28/05/2019 22:10

They've got something people want to buy - why on earth not? I missed the memo saying I was forced to attend any of these concerts. Habing said that, I was dragged along to an OMD concert by a mate, actually it was good fun, no more no less.

Long decades likely including some periods of substance abuse, contractual nightmares and divorce settlements - they're a few non short of a pension and willing to busk for some cash, where's the harm?

BadLad · 28/05/2019 23:19

Some of them are in a bit of a tricky position, didn’t make enough money to keep them forever but too well known/ recognisable to get a normal job. I can understand why they do it

MrsMoastyToasty · 28/05/2019 23:26

It's a money maker for the venue's too. Bristol City's stadium is hosting Take That tonight. Last week it was Rod Stewart and we still have the Spice Girls and Muse to come before the football season starts again.

xsquared · 29/05/2019 00:38

If the demand is there, then I don't see the problem. I personally love a bit of nostalgia. A lot of today's music is very bland and there are very few musicians of the same calibre as those back in the 70s and 80s.

I'm going to see Shakespears Sister with a group of colleagues in November and l can't wait!

Boopeedoop · 29/05/2019 01:04

I'm enjoying the new kids on the block being back. They are still making new music.

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 29/05/2019 01:29

Well I for one was delighted to have the opportunity to see the band I loved in my youth again. I was happy to pay money for that ticket, so your venom is directed at me, cos if I'm happy to pay, and they need the money (tacky to speculate why!) then it's win-win

LadyOfTheCanyon · 29/05/2019 05:38

@BadLad Burn!Grin

AnyFucker · 29/05/2019 05:56

They are not trained for anything else and they have mortgages to pay just like the rest of us

I don't partake but don't see an issue with it. Good luck to 'em

AnyFucker · 29/05/2019 05:57

Or should I say mortgages, alimony, coke habit etc (you get the gist)

KatherineJaneway · 29/05/2019 06:04

I've been to see reformed bands because I couldn’t go and see them when I was younger for many reasons. I think it is brilliant.

Due to streaming and YouTube, record sales no longer bring in a lot of cash unless you are of the Adele league. Touring is where the money is for many artists.

dustarr73 · 29/05/2019 06:12

Boyzone are doing their 25th anniversary tour. Then i would say they will call it quits.
Spice Girls are only doing it for the money, which is fair enough. But i agree they all seem to be a bit bland.Harmless but bland.

Ilovetolurk · 29/05/2019 06:12

I went to an OMD concert too and it was really good. Opportunity for me to see the bands I loved in my early teens but was too young and skint to see at the time.

2/3rds of Bananarama though? No, you’re alright I’m washing my hair

Eastpoint · 29/05/2019 06:19

A friend of mine is in an 80s band and they’ve been on tour a few times and played at festivals last summer & the summer before. He has plenty of money (they have other successful businesses) and says it’s brilliant fun performing and touring with your friends. His son has finished school now and the last few summers worked as a roady. I have been to see Soul II Soul and they were fantastic, so were Nile Rogers & Chic.
