Bands from the 90s, 80s and even 70s reforming and flogging themselves around on tours

What do you think of this?

I am late middle aged and I hate thoughtless/everyday ageism as much as anyone, but honestly I'm quite dumbfounded at the number of old rockers who still can't quite quit the fame game.

Think of the bands who have regrouped in recent years (even though they hated each other when they split). Or the solo artists who think they can have a career without the rest of their group. I find them all a tiny bit pitiful tbh.

The Spice Girls?! Come on, have a bit of dignity. You made gazillions at the time, can't you be content with that?

I think that internet has killed album sales for them. Also as many pp have said they aren't trained for anything else and want to carry on playing music.

I am going to horribly ageist and fattist though. I went to see an old American punk band recently. They were great and still had the attitude. But something was a tiny bit lost when their youthful skinniness has gone. Sorry but a fat old punk hasn't the same energy as a young skinny on drugs one. Of course this could be an unconscious reflection of me. If they are older and fatter then I must be too!

They’re doing their job, for money...just like the rest of us.
Really stupid opinion

crumpet · 29/05/2019 11:34

Saw the Waterboys recently who put on a nigh on flawless performance. Very engaging, great stage presence, and a fab night out.

Touring’s the only way to make money now, so that’s why they do it.
A lot of the smaller bands from years ago never actually stopped touring, they just weren’t in the news.

Was it greenday?

VoteJadot · 29/05/2019 11:39

Also a decent source of income for lots of jobbing musicians. But yeah as other people have pointed out the entire economy of the music business has shifted and touring is where the money's at these days. If you didn't write your own material then you don't get the royalties coming in.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 29/05/2019 11:40

Not a new thing. Frank Sinatra came back from retirement over and over again.

I don't see the harm if there are people who still want to see them. Butlins regularly have decade-themed weekend with original bands (or as many of the original members who are still aliveConfused) playing. They sell out.

MenuPlant · 29/05/2019 11:42

'The letter said that we needen’t fear too much about the noise, as the concerts were aimed at “a mature audience” and will be over by 10.45pm'

This!

Have also been to dance/rave one dayers, with acts and djs from back in the day, usually on a Sunday and home for 1130 😂😂😂

Loads of the big festivals are squarely aimed at the middle aged crew as well.

I think young people do different stuff these days +festivals so £££ now

BikeRunSki · 29/05/2019 11:42

Christmas would t be Christmas without my annual trip to see The (Beautiful) South. The fans love a bit of nostalgia too!

Processedpea · 29/05/2019 11:44

the bands i like tend to tour smaller venues. but i don't particularly think the big scale arena tours offer much in the way of a show. they're far too big and it seems to be just a money making venture to all concerned.

the sound issue for the spice girls tour really is showing contempt for the fans who paid high amounts for a really bad experience

Mrsjayy · 29/05/2019 11:44

Oh gawd I'm old I love Primal scream and here they are doing nostalgia Confused

Thinkinghappythoughts · 29/05/2019 11:47

tomtom1999xx No...Dead Kennedys.

VoteJadot · 29/05/2019 11:47

Noel Gallagher on Desert Island Discs is what finished me off...

IHaveBrilloHair · 29/05/2019 11:50

I'm seeing Backstreet boys next month, it wasn't even me who suggested it, it was my 17yr old!

Thinkinghappythoughts · 29/05/2019 11:50

Why?

elQuintoConyo · 29/05/2019 11:52

Where do you stand on Leonard Cohen?

HoldingTheDoor · 29/05/2019 12:00

Leonard Cohen's a little deceased isn't he?

OP is BU though.

schnubbins · 29/05/2019 12:05

I am going to see The Eagles tomorrow. That's a band that have been around for ever .Cannot remember them touring when we were young ( and thay certainly wouldn't have come to Ireland where I grew up.Glenn Freys son Deacon has taken his place .Cannot wait to see them.

ZaZathecat · 29/05/2019 12:11

Crikey Mrs Moasty, Muse? They're hardly 'old rockers reforming'! Matt Bellamy's only 41 and they've been rocking continuously. I don't see a problem with the ones that do reform though, people obviously want to see them

ArchieHarrison · 29/05/2019 12:40

@schnubbins - do they still have to leave the stage on opposite sides so they can avoid speaking to each other!?! two sets of managers and transport arrangements because the hate runs so deep

(for the ultimate old b*ggers touring it's got to be the Stones - actual musicians hidden back stage, no mics on keith or charlie)

BillGiggeloe · 29/05/2019 13:23

Lots of them have always done the festival scene too.

I love seeing some of my favorite bands outside in the sun rather than at a huge stadium like they would have been back in the day.

PlinkPlink · 29/05/2019 13:40

You're not a musician, I presume?

There's something about performing that can be incredibly addictive. I love it. It's the most wonderful feeling performing in front of an audience and giving pleasure to someone else's ears/brain.

Though lots, I do suspect, do it for money, I also strongly suspect they do it for the love of performing.

And don't hate on the Spice Girls. I would love to go and see them - spent my entire childhood idolising them Grin so I'm probably looking at them through Rose tinted glasses.

boringbertha · 29/05/2019 13:46

I've seen a few over the years, Duran Duran (totally obsessed in the 80s!) Toyah, Prince and I was thrilled to finally be able to see them live as this was totally impossible in the 80s.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 29/05/2019 14:05

I am a musician (well I play an instrument) Plink.

I have no problem with older musicians who just keep going. I can't think how many times I've been to see Elvis Costello - more than 10 certainly.

It's the one who re-form years later to try and get back their glory days, overcoming great personal animosity and having to swallow their own countless denials that they would EVER get back together, that I find a bit naff.

I saw my heart throb Paul Young last year.
It was proper cringy.
I did like hearing No Parlez again but his voice was no way near as good.
He was also Dad dancing 🕺🏻.
