50 gifts for DH

Deminism · 28/05/2019 20:40

Planning ahead - he's 50 in November, but I want to get dh 50 gifts for turning 50. Small ones fine - not going to buy anything expensive (except one proper gift). He only has me and DCs so the only presents he has to open are from us.

So I thought I might split it into category - so ten types of food for example so I could get a nice cheese and a bottle of wine, and fancy snacks etc. Then ten types of clothes so that can include socks and a t-shirt etc.

And I will include things like a pic of the kids in a frame.

And one will be a 50 balloon.

I may buy 10 books in the charity shop - ones he would like but I have time to hunt them down.

But I am grateful for all ideas please. Great gadgets for the kitchen, tools for his bike etc.

He likes football, food, wine, books (history, politics, contemporary novels), the beach, singing....

Thank you!

What a brilliant idea! You have lots of ideas going. What about getting him the newspaper from the day he was born? Singing - is there an experience gift around that? Football - ticket to see his team?

wowfudge · 28/05/2019 20:48

Does he support a football club? You could buy him something from the club shop, like gloves, keyring, etc - there are usually quite a few lower cost things.

You could get 50 of his favourite sweet or chocolate too.

PotteringAlong · 28/05/2019 20:49

A 50p piece?
Copy of the number 1 record on the day he was born?

I love this idea. I have four years until DP is 50 so stealing it! How about CDs/DVDs/iTunes voucher/PlayStation game?

Lego? Sounds daft but DP has always wanted a certain type of car. As in has a separate savings pot, takes as long as it takes etc. I found a Lego model of it. DS built it up and we wrapped it up. He loved it. Also got him an experience day driving one round a track.

Does your DH play a sport? Use nice toiletries?

Deminism · 28/05/2019 20:54

These are great already thank you - appreciative of all suggestions. I might make one a bag and put the others in it so the bag is one of the gifts too.

DH loves lego - so that is fab idea. Also something from the football club shop. Love the 50 of his fave sweet too.

Tickets for things during his 50th year
Include things like picnic voucher and cinema tickets so the cost can be spread.

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2019 20:57

What about gadgets relating to your themes eg book gadgets like book mark, one of those clip on reading lights, book holder
Wine gadgets..corkscrew, bottle stop, one of those big glasses that holds a full bottle, apron with wine info on
Food gadgets..recipe book stand, novelty chopping board, knife set

A good google should bring up some cheap options

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2019 20:58

Also.. one or two items from his childhood eg fave comic, board game etc

BlackcurrantJamontoast · 28/05/2019 21:02

Hell on earth and environmentally unsound. I see people struggling to open 50 items of tat, the novelty wears off quickly.

Socks are not a gift to remember

Just get 1 fantastic item that he will still have when 70.

HighlandWorrier · 28/05/2019 21:04

My DH is also 50 in November and just been thinking I need to start planning so was great to read your thread OP, has given me some ideas. Happy planning Wink

RollsEyes · 28/05/2019 21:05

How about 50 experiences instead of 50 objects?

AudacityOfHope · 28/05/2019 21:08

I would seriously hate this! 50 items? What a waste. I'd be bored after, say, item 6. Ten food things? Oh cheese, thanks. Crisps, thanks. A bottle of wine, tha-zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Sorry but the wastefulness of this has weirdly riled me a bit!

Isthebigwomanhere · 28/05/2019 21:17

Someone did this fo my 30th.
And although I'm grateful for the effort and thought that went into it, it was just 30 bits of crap that no one really needed.

Lyds40 · 28/05/2019 21:19

Yeah my dh would hate this, give up and let the kids open them after present number 10!! Why not get 2 or 3 good quality lovely presents?

GoFiguire · 28/05/2019 21:25

A deck of cards and take out the Jokers.

HappyBumbleBee · 28/05/2019 21:29

What a brilliant idea! My hubby is 50 next year so i might use you as my inspiration if you don't mind op and start filling a box over the next year! Lol 😁
As for ideas, an old coin from his year of birth? Copy of the song that was number 1 the day he was born? Newspaper or magazine etc xx

daisychain01 · 28/05/2019 21:32

Hell on earth and environmentally unsound. I see people struggling to open 50 items of tat, the novelty wears off quickly.

Given so many impactful messages about reducing waste in the media, I tend to agree that a load of cheap throwaway stuff seems terribly wasteful, including wrapping paper, packaging etc.

And people shouldn't be shy in talking about it candidly, without it being associated with being "killjoys".

Personally I'm all for 1 item of really good quality that he can treasure always. And at the age of 50 a "surprise" is probably less relevant that shopping for the item together, so he can choose his special gift. Doing that together would be part of his birthday experience.

If you have a budget (presumably your 50 items would cost around £400-£500), then it could buy something lovely.

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2019 21:33

Well I’m guessing it’s only wasteful if OP gets him things he won’t like! And she knows him better than us so must have thought he’d like it?

bliminy · 28/05/2019 21:34

I'm about to turn 50 and I'd be really annoyed if DH did this.

AudacityOfHope · 28/05/2019 21:35

Well not really @MrsGrindah it's wasteful consumerism regardless of whether the husband likes all of the items or not. They'll still contribute to waste and so on.

Silversky70 · 28/05/2019 21:36

I think this is overkill too. It's just too much stuff.

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2019 21:37

but you could say that about all presents?

MrsGrindah · 28/05/2019 21:39

It’s not something I’d like either but she didn’t ask us that just for ideas

0hT00dles · 28/05/2019 21:41

I did 30 gifts for his 30th. I bought 30 bottles of nice, but different beers (was a weird tesco delivery of just beer😂!) and bought 30 gifts we could use together/or canvas pictures. All things he’d actually use and we did it in the lead up to his birthday so he had a gift to open each day before his birthday and then on his birthday he got a bigger present-with the baby all dressed up in stuff saying my daddy is 30 today.

You have plenty of time to hit the online sales to pick up bits. I bought loads of football bits for his club. Underwear. Footballs. Stuff he wouldn’t generally buy for himself and that he loves to use.

Have fun with it! It’s great fun

miaCara · 28/05/2019 21:48

A friend was given for her 50th a bag of 50 things for someone who is 'old' by an acquaintance. It was a real bag o' trash with things like huge pants , denture cleaner , hair net etc. I dont think there was one item that she would have used so it all went to the charity shop.
But these items are things OPs DH will like and will use - and if he gets fed up of all the opening he can make it a family affair and let the kids have a go at opening the things like socks etc.

For my DHs present one year I taped pound coins to the card in the shape of the number . Maybe do the same with 50ps?
