When does UK weather usually improve?

By what month(ish)?

I thought End of May/June was suppose to be really hot sunshine.

Or is that just July and August?

Currently a bit miffed at the weather forecast on my phone, telling me it's highs of 16 today but completely cloudy Hmm So it'll be humid and sticky, the worst kind. I'd rather just have the cold.

This is good weather for the UK as far as I'm concerned! Yesterday afternoon was glorious. It's always going to be a bit of a mixed bag.

dementedpixie · 28/05/2019 08:11

I would say more july/ August. Normally improves just as my kids go back to school in August! (Scotland, so our schools finish end of June and go back mid August)

IStillMissBlockbuster · 28/05/2019 08:11

Are you new to living in the UK?

Really hot sunshine is very much the exception rather than the rule. It is more likely to happen in July and August but sadly, not guaranteed even then. Last year was a bloody miracle.

Sunny/rainy/cloudy all on the same day is totally normal. We had a heatwave last year but some years it rains all summer. You can probably look forward to not wearing a big coat until Oct/Nov though.

rosesandcashmere · 28/05/2019 08:15

Where in the U.K. are you? That can make a difference. It doesn't always improve for long! If you're in central London for instance it will be more humid than if you're by the coast when the sun comes out

ThisIsTheEndgame · 28/05/2019 08:16

Usually it's warm around now, to melt the teenagers sitting their GCSE and A Level exams in sweaty airless exam halls. Then it will start raining as the schools break up, and then start being sunny again for the August bank holiday weekend and the kids going back to school.

80sMum · 28/05/2019 08:16

It already has, at least it has in the South! The weather here in Hampshire turned to Spring several weeks ago. Easter weekend in April was lovely. Since then we've had loads of beautiful days.

If you're further north, you may see a lot less sunshine and a lot more rain on average.

So, basically, this weather we are having right now is as good as it gets! The temperatures may be a bit higher in June, July and August than they are now - but it's also likely that they won't be! UK weather can be somewhat unpredictable!

m0therofdragons · 28/05/2019 08:20

Last summer was stunning July and August to the point my grass was brown but the summer before it rained every single week. It's warm but there are a few showers - plants are loving this weather.

BarbaraofSevillle · 28/05/2019 08:38

It’s simply too random to predict. It can also vary hugely across the country. Easter was hot and sunny remember? I remember two consecutive Marches where one was hot and sunny and the next was thick snow. August is often cold and rainy and I also remember within the last few years that there was a quite warm spell in early November.

One thing that does seem certain is that if you plan an outdoor event, there is a bank or school holiday, or a UK holiday, it seems more likely than not that the weather will be shit. Ditto the weather seems better during the Monday to Friday working week than at the weekend. I read somewhere where this was statistically proved to be the case and possibly due to the effects of polluition.

Giantsbane · 28/05/2019 08:44

im "up north" near hadrians wall and personally I think our best weather is usually may and june. its nice and dry then mostly. july and august can be so hit and miss

UrsulaPandress · 28/05/2019 08:47

Are you new to the UK?

There is no 'usual'.

And what do you mean by improve?

coconuttelegraph · 28/05/2019 08:48

I assume you aren't a UK native, there is no unsually, we don't have a predictable type of climate and the whole country never has the same weather on any given day.

WhatAGreatDay · 28/05/2019 09:03

We sometimes have crap summers without much nice (warm, sunny) weather at all.

fussychica · 28/05/2019 09:13

Whenever I leave the country. So you'll be sweltering this weekend whilst it will be raining where I'm heading!

DGRossetti · 28/05/2019 09:32

I have a sense that this will be one of those years where summer will be "just around the corner" right into September Sad. It has all the hallmarks.

We'll have some glorious days, but nothing you can count on.

MulesToJules · 28/05/2019 09:58

I'm not new to the UK, no Grin born here.

I moved to Beds/Hertfordshire 2 years ago. Last year was a fantastic Summer.

I am ashamed to admit I've never really paid much attention on the seasons until now Blush It's very bizarre, but I just didn't really care or take any mental notes before having a DC.

MorrisZapp · 28/05/2019 10:02

Let's not forget the mini summer we got in February! I'm in Edinburgh and we almost always had a glorious September if that helps?

In fact I'm usually impatient to break out the cashmere jumpers and pumpkin spice lattes and wishing away the muggy weather in late October.

x2boys · 28/05/2019 10:07

It's not always grim up North , it's been pleasant for a few weeks (in the main) in my part of Greater Manchester, and we had a scorching summer along with the rest of the UK last year .

ExpletiveDelighted · 28/05/2019 10:07

Often the best of the weather is late May/June/early July then it goes wetter and cooler. I don't want a repeat of last summer, it was far too hot for far too long for me.

YetAnotherUser · 28/05/2019 10:10

I live in the south, and late May is often pretty good as far as nice weather goes. Bit of a mixed bag at the moment, but this is England. The only thing you can rely on with the weather, is for it to be unreliable.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 28/05/2019 10:12

July and August.
Everyone seems to forget this every year though and complain about June being colder or wetter than they remember.

UrsulaPandress · 28/05/2019 12:16

As a horse owner I am very attuned to the weather. We often have lovely Springs - April and May - and the horses are not allowed on to the summer grazing, then the minute they are allowed out the weather turns. Except for last year when the horse injured himself on the first day out and spent the whole of the hot summer confined to barracks.

Now I am the proud owner of a small wildlife pond in my garden and am often praying for rain ...

managedmis · 28/05/2019 12:16

Yeah it never really improves to be fair.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 28/05/2019 12:23

I tend to find the first 2-3 weeks of September are reliably nice. I find August to be hit & miss, the temps are usually ok but it can be cloudy & wet interspersed with lovely days. July tends towards lovely, except for the last week (as that’s when nearly or possibly all the schools are out).

BogglesGoggles · 28/05/2019 12:24

This year has been unusual ime. I am usually half dead from hear by this point in the year.
