Searching real “family” movies

We’ve been looking for films to watch as a family recently and actually finding it pretty hard! DC are 5 and 7 and quite sensitive so nothing over a PG, and also:

  • we don’t want a kids film, or at least it has to be something genuinely enjoyable for adults

  • nothing scary, no swearing, no bits that will be difficult to explain to an inquisitive 7-year-old

  • can be modern or vintage

  • ideally live action rather than animation

  • quick-moving with a minimum of slow talky bits (as attention wanders).

We’ve watched Back to the Future, Big, Peter Rabbit, Homeward Bound, Matilda etc. But keep thinking of films and realising they’d not work for one reason and another! All suggestions gratefully accepted.

Labyrinth.

GravityFalls · 27/05/2019 19:55

I tried that and it was too long and the puppets were too scary! This is what I mean, I keep thinking they’re perfect and then...not.

Bit surprised that you’re ok with Big and Back to the Future, but given you are - loads out there to enjoy, and I really recommend Common sense media for giving you a heads up about films

This evening we watched Honey I Shrunk the Kids with DDs aged 5 and 7.

DD1 loved it.

They're both looking forward to Honey I Blew Up the Kid.

Shitsandgigglez · 27/05/2019 19:59

Oh and new Mary poppins

GravityFalls · 27/05/2019 20:01

I’m not prudish about things but the slightly dodgy content in Big and Back to the Future went right over their heads. Swearing/violence not so easy to get past.

Done Paddington and Mary Poppins - they’re just the right sort of vibe really.

Labyrinth isn’t scary for little ones. Have you actually shown it to your dc?

rosybell · 27/05/2019 20:23

My DC are also 7 and 5. In the last year we've enjoyed Hook, The Princess bride, Jamanji, Diary of a Wimpy Kid (there's a few of these), Narnia.

These are all ones that both DC's and me and DH enjoyed. Some of the less intense Marvel ones are also good.

Rarfy · 27/05/2019 20:26

Drop dead Fred although a bit naughty.

Look who's talking.

Can't remember the name now but jinny 5 is alive I remember from being a kid and batteries not included.

GravityFalls · 27/05/2019 20:29

Yes, they did watch Labyrinth, they found the puppets and the Goblin King really creepy.

I second the goonies. Also my sons absolutely loved a film called Zathura when they were younger, its about two brothers playing a board game they find in the attic (not scary) - its nice for siblings to watch.
They also loved aliens in the attic, honey i shrunk the kids, the chipmunks movies...
