If you have DC's at high school, what time do they leave in the morning and how far do they travel?

We are hoping to move house soon. DS is in year 8 and settled and does not want to change schools. He is worried though about getting to school on time and having to leave earlier in the morning to get there.

We currently live less than a mile from his school. I'm just wondering what others do and how far they travel and what time people leave in the morning to juggle multiple school drop offs.

She leaves at 7.35/40 ish. Takes about 25 mins. Longer on the way home due to traffic.

School is 12 miles away. I drive her on the way to my work.

School is 15 miles away and close to my office so I drive him in and drop him off.

School starts at 8.30 and in the rush hour we need a good 30 mins. So we leave by 7.45 to be sure we make it.

I think the evening he takes the bus home and he finishes at 4 and is home by 4.40.

DD currently has a 5 - 10 minute walk, school starts at 8.20am so she's out the door by 8.10am at the latest. This will all change when she moves schools for A levels. Then she will be looking at a journey time of between 30 - 90 minutes involving bus & train depending on where she chooses to study.

ds's school was 1.1 miles away. Obviously he walked and left at 8 until 6th form when he wouldn't get out of bed in time

The dds' school was 1.5 miles away and they walked. dd2 would leave about 7.45.
dd1 would leave at 7.30 as she did a bit of a "walking bus" Grin round her friends houses.

Oh, both their schools started at 8.30.

Leave a bit before 7 home at 7. Travel about 45km. We all do it together - 4 kids from primary onwards.

DD leaves about 7.05-7.10 takes 25 ish minutes. After walked up she's in about 7.45-7.50. Starts at 8.25. She could probably get a later bus but she likes to know that of something goes wrong she has a 'spare' which she wouldn't if she went later.

Possibly not helpful, but we live in the US and our high school starts at 7.55pm. A couple of years ago they switched from starting at 7.35am and that 20 minutes extra actually makes a huge difference.

My lot leave around 7.45am but kids who live a ferry ride away leave at 6.30am.

foxyknoxy30 · 26/05/2019 20:26

8-20 10 mins walk

TheStakeIsNotThePower · 26/05/2019 20:36

Gets the school bus at 8. school is around 5 miles away. Gets home at 4pm.

fruitpastille · 26/05/2019 20:49

Leaves 7.40 and walks 2 miles but has friends for company. Always refuses offer of lift whatever the weather! I quite often take bulky musical instruments to drop off over lunchtime.

ElephantsEatEggs · 26/05/2019 21:02

Both children in secondary school, it's 1.3 mile away. They leave at 8.05 - 8.10 and walk at a leisurely pace. Takes them 20 minutes. School opens at 8.40, registration is at 8.45.

Ds1 is up and in the shower at 6.30am, Ds2 goes in as soon as Ds1 is out. They like a relaxed leisurely morning, they do a language app in the morning too.

Aragog · 26/05/2019 21:08

Dd used to leave with her dad at 7:45am and was dropped off on his way to work by about 8am. She started school at 8:30 but met friends to chat etc before.
She's sixth form now and at a different school but same location. School starts later so she goes to a coffee shop and meets a variety of friends each morning. Schools about 3.5-4 miles away. She could catch a bus, and does heading home a bit, but chooses the easy option in a morning.

Monr0e · 26/05/2019 22:25

Thanks everyone, quite a variety.

School starts at 8.35am, he currently leaves at 8.10am. There are no direct bus routes so it would be a walk and 2 buses

Cycling would be much more straightforward but he is currently under physio and a consultant for knee pain so that is not possible at the minute but I'm hoping that may change and make things easier for everyone

Ds school is 2 miles away. He leaves at 8:20 in the car with dh and it takes about 10 minutes. He walks home which takes him about an hour.

Livedandlearned · 26/05/2019 22:38

Mine leave as late as physically possible. Bus is at 8:20 and school starts at 8:45.

I pass kids on their way to school looking fresh and happy and I think of mine probably still in bed and wonder where I went wrong.

Babdoc · 26/05/2019 22:38

Rural Scotland, so the DC used to leave home at 8.10 for a 16 mile slow bus trip round several villages to get to school in the nearest town. School started at 9.

Livedandlearned · 26/05/2019 22:41

School is 10 miles away
