If you have DC's at high school, what time do they leave in the morning and how far do they travel?

We are hoping to move house soon. DS is in year 8 and settled and does not want to change schools. He is worried though about getting to school on time and having to leave earlier in the morning to get there.

We currently live less than a mile from his school. I'm just wondering what others do and how far they travel and what time people leave in the morning to juggle multiple school drop offs.

DDs high school is about a mile away. She leaves at 8 and she's at school by about 25 past. School starts at 8.45

MyDcAreMarvel · 26/05/2019 19:39

Dd leaves at 7am travels five miles on the bus in 45 minutes. School starts at 8.30 so she hangs out in the dining room for 45 minutes.
It the norm where I live to travel to a good school.

ShesABelter · 26/05/2019 19:40

We stay at 5/10 minute walk. She leaves at half eight.

fussygalore118 · 26/05/2019 19:46

Our daughter leaves the house at 7.35.. bus picks her up right outside, takes between 45m to 1 hour to get to school.

AveEldon · 26/05/2019 19:48

One travels 8 miles - leaves 6.40 - train and bus
One travels 2 miles - leaves 7.30 - bus

Both could leave later but they prefer to be early

bigTillyMint · 26/05/2019 19:49

We live 3miles from DC school. 45min by bus (no simple route) but 15min by bike so DS cycled from Y7, leaving at 8.30am.

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 19:51

DD left the house at 7.40 to catch a bus to her school 4 miles away. School started at 8.20 am.

implantsandaDyson · 26/05/2019 19:51

She leaves the house at 7.50am - gets a school bus. School is about 7 miles away. On her way home there's no direct bus so she gets two buses home. It can take her anywhere from 45 - 90 mins to get home. Depends on how quickly she shifts after school and if she nips into shop/ has a bit of a chat on the way home.

Also very normal to travel a distance to get to post primary school where I am. She gets a free bus pass.

TapasForTwo · 26/05/2019 19:52

Bus journey only took 15 minutes as it was a dedicated school bus and only stopped in our village.

wildbhoysmama · 26/05/2019 19:54

820/30 - 5 minute walk, school starts at 845. One of the reasons we moved here was the proximity to both primary and secondary good schools.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 26/05/2019 19:54

DS leaves at 8. It’s about 3 miles away. He gets the bus or cycles. No idea what time he gets there but school starts at 8.40. He takes 3 minutes to get home so home by 3.30.

Our older kids travelled a long way to school, made friends who lived a long way away and frankly, we found all the running around after them a bit of a drag.

With DS we had the choice of a school with an amazing reputation but an awful commute or our local decent enough one which we were impressed with on the visit. We chose local and are really pleased we did.

Sockwomble · 26/05/2019 19:55

Ds is picked up by school transport (its a special school) at 7.50 and gets to school 30 miles away just before 9am.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 26/05/2019 19:56

Leaves to catch the bus at 7.45, 15 min journey, school starts at 8.15

Bunnybigears · 26/05/2019 20:03

DS goes to an school 4 miles away. He goes on the bus, he leaves home at 7:50 4 days and 6:50 on the day he has a before school club.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 26/05/2019 20:03

Both walk less than a mile and leave about 25 past 8 for a start time of 8:50.

I used to have to get the bus to school and being able to walk was something I was really keen on for my children.

Bluetrews25 · 26/05/2019 20:07

Have you looked at public/school transport? He should be able to travel independently at high school. That might simplify it for you, OP.
My DS used to set off around 0715 for walk to bus that took him several miles (?8) to school.
Or are the roads suitable for cycling?

Troels · 26/05/2019 20:08

My Dd leaves just after 8 to catch the school bus on the main road. the school is about 6 miles away. Bus is provided. School starts at 9.

boxlikeamarchhare · 26/05/2019 20:08

About 0.7 mile walk. We moved here to make that happen.

boxlikeamarchhare · 26/05/2019 20:09

Oops missed the other bit, actually leaves about 8am to go to the music block or library. School starts at 8:45.

Decormad38 · 26/05/2019 20:10

She leaves at 8.00 walks to her friends they get to school for 8.20. School starts 8.30.

FrenchyQ · 26/05/2019 20:11

My son leaves at 7.15am, he catches the bus to school which is 8 miles away, gets him in at 8.05am. He goes to library or canteen before school starts

mizu · 26/05/2019 20:11

5 minute walk. Moved here so they were close which in turn make my life as a full time teacher elsewhere easier.

LemonBreeland · 26/05/2019 20:12

DS1 travels 9 miles and leaves the house just after 8. He goes to our closest high school though. We live fairly rurally.
