Does anyone else sigh a lot?

I’ve noticed of late, that I sigh a lot. I’m not upset, but I’ve had a lot of people at work ask me ‘are you ok?’ I’m like, ‘I’m fine, nothing wrong, why?’

Does anyone else do this?

I do!
I don't know why and I don't even notice I am doing it a lot of the time until someone asks if I am ok and then I realise.

Rockbird · 26/05/2019 09:09

Yes! I sigh and say oh my goodness, or good Lord etc a lot. People are always asking what's up Grin

TwittleBee · 26/05/2019 09:11

Yes I do too! My new work colleagues have picked up on it and always ask if I need help! I'm sure it's because of my anxiety though; whilst I might not need help with work, there will always be a million other conversations and situations playing out in my mind so probably just me unconsciously reacting to one of them haha

SconNotScone · 26/05/2019 09:11

Yes I do! I do it a lot when I stand up from a chair, even though I’m young and agile, not suffering from aches and pains! I noticed it recently, and need to work hard to reel it in!

stephstrops · 26/05/2019 09:12

Me too. Drives my DP mad. I can’t explain why I do it either

BlueCookieMonster · 26/05/2019 09:12

I’ve found my people, I am quite normally a happy go lucky sort (with a huge edge of sarcasm), so not a clue where it’s coming from?

OP posts:
Fruityb · 26/05/2019 09:13

Yep and it drives my husband mad!

Inneedofadvice27 · 26/05/2019 09:14

Me too! I think i do it way more at work than at home. I’m now wondering if it’s acting as some sort of subconscious release of tension!

dudsville · 26/05/2019 09:16

I do. I agree with the release of tension. It feels good.

Whitefishy · 26/05/2019 09:18

I do! I know it’s probably really annoying. I’m also I happy go lucky sort of person and generally quite positive but it must sound like I’m just walking around feeling sorry for myself all day or looking for attention! Grin I can’t stop! I also moan and groan a lot when I get up, sit down, do anything.

Whitefishy · 26/05/2019 09:18

I agree a release of tension is probably accurate.

floraloctopus · 26/05/2019 09:21

Apparently a sigh is a way of getting rid of a build up of co^2 so it's not unusual for people feeling anxious to sigh more. It's a more effective way than yawning.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 26/05/2019 09:22

I always find people who sigh a lot a bit passive aggressive or they are playing the 'woe is me' martyr card. Either way i find it a bit childish.

Dvg · 26/05/2019 09:30

Yeah i sigh , I feel like its just taking a deep breath though and i sigh a lot when tired or feeling lazy.

Cant help it, just comes out

adaline · 26/05/2019 09:31

No, but DH does and it really infuriates me!

Fakeflowersandlemonade · 26/05/2019 09:34

I did a first aid course and the instructor told us it was a way of getting your blood sugar down. Have no idea if this is true but he said if you are too much chocolate or sweet things you will sigh alot and thinking about it I actually do.

JellySlice · 26/05/2019 09:45

I sigh a lot when I'm a passenger in a car. I think perhaps I'm not breathing deeply enough because of my posture, and I'm probably also unconsciously worrying about getting carsick. It's definitely not a judgey sigh, more a sudden deeper breath.

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/05/2019 09:51

Yes, when I'm deep in thought, especially when worrying or puzzling about something they just happen, DS notices, I don't do it on purpose. I think what happens is that I start breathing very shallow breaths when I'm worried about something then my body realises its getting low on oxygen and sighs to kick start proper breathing again.

surlycurly · 26/05/2019 10:12

It is a CO2 / oxygen balance issue. When it's out of balance the body sighs to stop from moving into panic attack mode, which is commonly caused by slow hyperventilation. It can happen over the course of 24 hrs. Excessive yawning is also the body's way to attempt to restore the balance. So usually an indication of extreme stress or chronic anxiety. Not really someone being childish at all 🙄

MaverickSnoopy · 26/05/2019 11:14

I sigh a lot. Mostly I think it's my way of bracing myself for what's coming next.

TreacherousPissFlap · 26/05/2019 11:16

DH does, he also yawns a lot too

I've concluded he just has a lot of air that needs expelling and this is probably the least unpleasant option Hmm

Mandala6 · 26/05/2019 11:18

Just at work. Completely involuntary, always makes me laugh inside when I realise I'm doing it.

Prokupatuscrakedatus · 26/05/2019 11:23

I've been told that this is a sign of vitamine B deficiency.
Anybody heard about that?

IWouldLikeToKnow · 26/05/2019 11:37

Have a look at chronic hyperventilation or dysfunctional breathing/breathing pattern disorder. Sighing is one of the signs. But obviously it could have nothing to do with it either. See if you have any of the other symptoms

TheQueef · 26/05/2019 11:42

I've got a full studio album of noises I make now I'm older.
Getting up.
Sitting down.
Up stairs.
Downstairs.
On the loo.
Getting off the loo.
Sitting in a car.
Driving the car.
I sigh when I look out of the window.
A pfuf every time politics is on telly.
Tuttings galore.
Good job I'm single really.
