FFS my toddler has smashed the TV

Exactly the title, 2 and a half year old "D"S has thrown something, it's hit the TV and smashed it whilst I was getting his tea out of the oven.

Bloody hell, it had to happen when it's just me and him instead of him and his dad didn't it.

So, I'm assuming house insurance doesn't cover it, (waiting for DP to check his phone at work to see the news and confirm on the insurance front, can't wait for that Hmm) and we definitely don't have a TV amount of cash spare right now!

Please tell me what house related items your DC's have broken to make me feel slightly better about it.

If you have accidental damage I would expect that to be covered. He didn't intentionally smash the TV!

60secondfacetimer · 25/05/2019 19:00

My three year old locked me out of the house today, she managed to push the side door key through the letter box to me but she had put the lock on the door so I had to kick it in and broke the lock. Luckily I can still lock it with the key lol.

My daughter's broken about 6 TVs. She's broken virtually everything in the house. Thats because she's autistic though its not usual behaviour.

We were able to claim on our insurance when one of ours broke the TV ( we had had it less than 2 months).

baubled · 25/05/2019 19:02

@MiniMum97 oh I know, I just wish his love for throwing things would end sooner rather than later!

You'll be covered if you have accidental damage cover for your contents.

HotChocolateLover · 25/05/2019 19:03

My son broke a TV once whilst he was enthusiastically playing the drums when he was about three 🤷‍♀️🤣 Luckily the insurance
Paid out but it was still about £100.

baubled · 25/05/2019 19:04

DP sorted the insurance so fingers crossed for accidental 🤞🏻

If you don’t have accidental damage coverage I would strongly suggest you get it for any future incidents.

baubled · 25/05/2019 19:08

@Coffeeonthesofa 100% that will be happening!

Yes my ds did the same when he was around the same age. They seem scarily easy to break TBH.

PlatypusPie · 25/05/2019 19:10

DD1 aged 6 reached up for something on shelf way above TV - we had thought it was all solid, but the shelf flipped and she tipped the TV off a broad shelf as she fell back. Not hurt, luckily , though we then went around the entire house looking at everything from the point of view of an adventurous mountain goat.

Insurance paid for a new one without a quibble.

Boysnme · 25/05/2019 19:10

My DS smashed our TV too, no idea how must have thrown something at it, we just told insurance company what had happened and it was all covered very easily under our policy ( we did have accidents damage cover). We still remind him about it years later!

baubled · 25/05/2019 19:10

Oh and he's just informed me that he's done a massive poo, fantastic

cookielove · 25/05/2019 19:13

Our ds through a metal plane at the tv when he was 2, massive crack and of course it died a death. Contents insurance covered it!

I can see why people put them on walls now! 😂😂

ReganSomerset · 25/05/2019 19:13

We mounted our TV to the wall to minimise the risk of this happening. It'll all be a funny story one day, and being without a TV for a while isn't the end of the world, don't worry about it.

cookielove · 25/05/2019 19:13

Threw not through

Coffeeonthesofa · 25/05/2019 19:15

Lesson learned after our DS broke the massive TV in my friends house ( friend was lovely about it, claimed off their insurance and we paid their excess).

greyspottedgoose · 25/05/2019 19:16

I would be inclined to look on Facebook marketplace for a cheap tv to tide you over rather than claim on the insurance which will more than likely have an excess anyway

hidinginthenightgarden · 25/05/2019 19:21

DD smashed a plane into ours. Insurance paid up and we had a new TV 24 hours later.
Not a great life lesson for the kids though.

Cannyhandleit · 25/05/2019 19:25

My ds smashed our tv 3times in 6months! He has special needs and was going through a pretty bad casting phase! It was repaired twice through accidental damage insurance that we took out after the first incident.

ZippyBungleandGeorge · 25/05/2019 19:30

My cat pushed my open laptop of a kitchen counter onto a tiled floor. I watched him do it from the garden but wasn't fast enough to catch it and he ignored me shouting Noooooo!! Luckily we had accidental damage cover I think most policies do

I don't understand this. What is the point in paying insurance if you are not going to use it when you need it? This is literally why people take out insurance.

I don't bother with insurance, I just replace things when they break, the money I save on premiums more than covers it.

greyspottedgoose · 26/05/2019 08:07

@freshstartnewme yes people take out insurance purely to claim for items that probably cost less that their excess, so next years premiums go up as they have claimed Hmm couldn't possibly be for big expenses like after a fire or break in
