What do you for lunch during the school holidays? Especially if your children have hot lunch at school

I need ideas. DD only has one week left of term and then I need to feed her lunch every day and she does not like my usual lunches (salad or roast tomatoes). She has a hot lunch at school so is used to a pretty solid meal. At weekends she usually just has some toast and snacks but that's not really ideal for every day. I want to have a different lunch each day of the week and then just repeat each week.

Bonus question - what do 8 year olds learn in history in the UK? I can't imagine DD growing up without learning about the Tudors etc. which of course isn't going to be taught in her Finnish school so I want to do a little bit of 'summer school' during the holidays, just some practice of her reading and writing in English and some history (got Horrible Histories dvds to watch as well) after breakfast before she has the rest of the day free. Any good resources for this?

Soup
Eggs on toast
Omelette
Leftovers from day before
Pizza
Packed lunch if you are out and about or a cafe lunch as a treat

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 25/05/2019 12:53

Soup and bread, toasties, sandwiches, filled bagels, scrambled eggs / beans / cheese on toast, wraps with eg hummus and roasted veg, pizza, fresh bread with a selection of cooked meats / cheeses / salad items..

My dd age 6 would have

Ham/ cheese sandwiches
Fruit
Yogurt
Breadsticks / hummus
Pesto pasta
Pasta with cheese
Crossiants with cheese
Raisins
Rice cakes With Philadelphia
Noodles
Pancakes
Cucumber/ peppers

When she gets home she would have cheese toastie / soup / noodles / bowl of cereal to keep her going until dinner

Weekends we are generally out and about so eat out or bring packed lunch

I'll do a small pizza cucumber sticks and salad
Fish fingers beans and cucumber batons
Dairylea sandwich, yogurt and cheese strings
I actually don't know what else right now

Overseasmom100 · 25/05/2019 12:56

I would do:

*Pizza with carrot and cucumber sticks

  • Sausages, chips or mashed pots and baked beans or peas
  • Spaghetti hoops on toast or scrambled egg
  • Could make a fish pie or shepherds pie and get a good 2/3 meals out of both serve with peas and carrots
anitagreen · 25/05/2019 12:59

Mine like them crap tins of beans and sausages too so they'll have that maybe with toast

Pipandmum · 25/05/2019 13:03

Chilli is good for a couple meals (or start it as a Bolognese then add beans and chilli for next day). Also Hungarian goulash, shepherds pie etc. Soup as mentioned. Toasted sandwich. Stick any meat in a pan serve with rice or new potatoes and steamed veg, add a sauce if feeling inspired. Frittata always good for chucking just about anything in. The odd ready meal if desperate. Show your child how to cook these things then they might decide to cook for you!
Personally I don’t care if they’re used to a hot meal during the day. It’s warm out cold food is fine.

anitagreen · 25/05/2019 13:09

I also tend to only do cold lunches in summer warm in cold weather

Pinkkahori · 25/05/2019 13:15

Beans on toast, toasted sandwiches, quesadillas, waffles and beans, homemade soup. I usually offer fruit or yoghurt with the above.
My kids take a packed lunch to school and we have our main meal in the evening so I keep to that in the holidays.

Sandwiches
Wraps
Pasta salad
Jacket potatoes
Soup
Eggs of any sort
Pita bread and dips with crudités
Snack plates - bread, cheese, grapes, carrots, crisps.

SunshineSpring · 25/05/2019 13:40

Lunches: not much to add to the above.
8 year old history: I remember DS doing Romans and celts/stone age this year. Great fire of London last year.
10 year old has done Vikings this year.

So I'd say pretty ancient history!

WorriedMami · 25/05/2019 15:10

Mine like cooked fruit so I do the old fashioned ones DH won't eat:
chicken in pineapple
Pork in apple purée
Pork/chicken in mustard sauce
Chicken or beef in tomato sauce
Bolo
Tom sauce
Scramble eggs/bacon
Veg soup with sausages

I always make double (except eggs!) and either freeze or eat the rest a day or two later. Rice or pasta plus veg in a pan whilst I whack the rest in the microwave.

Some great ideas here, thanks! I shall have a look at the bitesize link.

In term of history: world war 2, Egyptians, Greeks, Anglo saxons, Romans...

EmmaGellerGreen · 25/05/2019 15:50

Primary school history here is Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, vikings, WW1 and now Tudors at the end if year 6. Oh and a random couple of weeks on the holocaust.

redeyetonowheregood · 25/05/2019 15:58

Many of the above but also bagels with cream cheese and melted cheese with some salad is popular in my house for lunch. Takes minutes.

Crunchymum · 25/05/2019 16:05

You have salad or roast tomatoes for lunch OP? Sounds..... urm.... filling.

I'm a big fan of leftovers. Easy peasy!!

peanutbutterismydownfall · 25/05/2019 16:11

During the holidays, my DC have one picnic meal a day (sandwiches/bits & bobs/soup) and one proper meal a day (anything from fishfingers & oven chips to a roast although I try & alternate the prepared food with the ready made stuff)

Sleephead1 · 25/05/2019 16:24

Well we tend to you out and about so lots of picnic type things sandwich/ pancakes , cheese, fruit , veg ( raw carrot, pepper ECT) then usually either a little treat of some kind gingerbread man , ice cream ECT. if we are at home eggy bread/ omelette, scrambled egg, boiled egg and toast, beans on toast I always give with veg and fruit them maybe a yoghurt , picky bits like tuna, boiled eggs, crackers / breadsticks / large rice cakes with salad veg. Sandwich/ wrap/ cheese toastie. Sometimes I make lentil and veg patties or savoury pancakes

Noteventhebestdrummer · 25/05/2019 16:26

What do you have with the roast tomatoes?

Coldhandscoldheart · 25/05/2019 16:32

If you’re in Finland, would she eat Karelia pies? Maybe with a bit of cheese or boiled egg?

Natsku · 25/05/2019 16:35

What do you have with the roast tomatoes?

Feta and spring onion. I really need to get some variety to my lunches but it's so easy and tasty and I can't be arsed to do something else just for me (toddler DS always has curry for his lunch because he's weird and fussy at lunch time but neither me or DD like curry)

OP posts:
Natsku · 25/05/2019 16:36

Ooo yes Karelian pies with ham and cheese. We're both coeliac but they have very decent GF ones in my local supermarket, shall get some for the freezer.

School holiday lunches tend to be similar to weekend lunches, I say 'what do you want for lunch?' and open the fridge, DD complains that she doesn't want any of that and asks why we can't go out for lunch everyday. She usually eats wraps or salady bits with hummus and falafels or baked beans on toast or tuna pasta salad or crumpets with cheese.
DD is 8 and in year 3. She did the Romans in history recently, has previously done Stone Age and the Great Fire of London. I know they do Mayans/ Aztecs next year because it ties in with a trip to Cadbury World.
