Daft I know but interested since my friend and I realised we were pronouncing scone or scones differently. I was calling them “scons “ and she “scones”. Is there a correct way?

Both are correct, although people will tell you otherwise.

I say scons. The other way sounds a bit hyacinth bucket to me...

Maybebaybe · 25/05/2019 08:57

To rhyme with ice cream cone.

But we used to say sCONEs until they're all S gone!

vdbfamily · 25/05/2019 08:58

It is a scone til you eat it then it's skon. ( Gone!!)

RattyTat · 25/05/2019 09:01

Scons.

ShowOfHands · 25/05/2019 09:03

Scone to rhyme with cone but both ways are fine. I also don't think it matters whether you put jam or cream first.

Some of these have a right answer (think/thing coming for example) but scone has two pronunciations.

BillywilliamV · 25/05/2019 09:04

We in the Scone (gone) Party are bitterly opposed to those in the Scone (come) Party and disavow everything they stand for.

We in the Scone (gone) Party invite all liberal, right minded people to join us and help make this country great again..

(Obviously ignore the vicious in-faction fighting between those members who espouse the inclusion of dried fruit and those members who consider this an abomination and an infringement of basic human rights!)

CherryPavlova · 25/05/2019 09:06

Apparently, the pronunciation is a geographical legacy.
American English has widened the use of scone pronounced to rhyme with cone but some area of U.K. already said it thus.
I think some areas say it almost as skoon.

indianbackground · 25/05/2019 09:09

I have scons. I think there isn’t a correct way to pronounce it.

Cannyhandleit · 25/05/2019 09:10

@CherryPavlova the pronunciation 'Skoon' is in references to the place outside of Perth. I'm 100% on the scone (gone) team.

BillywilliamV · 25/05/2019 09:13

Scone (gon) is a place near Perth in Scotland.
They have a stone (own) of Scone (goon) , they have a graveyard with lots of bones (owns) and they sell scones (gones)!

Honestly (on)!!

madcatladyforever · 25/05/2019 09:15

Always scons. The other pronunciation is an abomination.

HappydaysArehere · 25/05/2019 09:20

Thank you all. This reminds me of that song “. You say “ether” and I say “ither....let’s call the whole thing off.

It's scon. It has to be or you can't do the joke (What's the fastest cake? Scone)

DadDadDad · 25/05/2019 10:35

This will answer a lot of your questions.

Fairylea · 25/05/2019 10:36

As in rhymes with gone. My dh always disagrees and it’s something we argue about GrinBlush

whenyouaredemoon · 25/05/2019 10:40

Scone (gon) is a place near Perth in Scotland.

That's Scoon!

Scone (gone) is the correct pronunciation of the thing you have with jam and cream (perhaps some people from SW England might have some comments about that too?)

Gingerninja01 · 25/05/2019 10:43

I pronounce it “scon” (as in “gone”)

pivotagain · 25/05/2019 10:49

I always think people are joking when they say scone! Surely it's scon

Langrish · 25/05/2019 10:50

Scon, everyone did where I grew up.

FiremanKing · 25/05/2019 10:50

Scones to rhyme with Rolling Stones.

Jolonglegs · 25/05/2019 10:51

Scone to rhyme with gone

tiedy · 25/05/2019 10:51

The Scottish half of my family say scons and the English say scones. I alternate and get confused!

FairfaxAikman · 25/05/2019 10:52

It's Skon. 96% of people in Scotland say it that way and seeing as we invented them that makes us right.

Bangs gavel

flowery · 25/05/2019 10:56

Rhymes with gone (Cambridgeshire)
