Daft I know but interested since my friend and I realised we were pronouncing scone or scones differently. I was calling them “scons “ and she “scones”. Is there a correct way?

Society needs to divide on tea/coffee drinkers , scon/ scones further filtered by jam or cream first.

I pronounce it rhymed with "gone." I'm American, but I lived in Scotland before scones became a thing in the US so my first encounter with this most excellent baked good was in an area where the "gone" pronunciation was universal. But I am in the minority in the US where most people pronounce it to rhyme with "stone."

I pronounce it scon, am from and in SE England so feel a bit weird that everyone I know says scone to rhyme with stone.

In my head (a very odd place, I admit) a 'scon' is light, fluffy and warm whilst a 'scone' is hard, heavy and cold. I find it easier to say no to a 'scone' than a 'scon' Confused

In Ireland Scone to rhyme with gone is the smart/posher way to say it but apparently the reverse is true in the UK. Really?! Well my grandmother was full of contradictions then! Good to know.

I watched Countdown one day when Dame Susie of the Dictionary confirmed scone as in gone. That's good enough for me.

I think my username says it all!

Scones like stones 😁

Hurray I accept the Scottish pronunciation as put forward by FairfaxAlkman, especially as that’s what I call those delicious concoctions.

sk-on

Eminybob · 25/07/2019 04:14

Surely the clue is in the spelling?
Scone to rhyme with bone otherwise the (magic) E is redundant?

How do you pronounce 'Stone'? Replace 't' with a 'c', there you have it 'scone' to rhyme with drone (or stone).

Scon always sounds a bit Hyacinth Bucket to me.

We pronounce it scones.

Scown. I’m Manc.

Scone to rhyme with gone. I'm Scottish and I don't think I've met anyone say it the other wrong way! And yes, Scone Palace is pronounced 'Scoon'.

Zofloraqueen27 · 25/07/2019 06:59

I went to a garden party at Buckingham Palace and staff there pronounced in scon - as does her Majesty apparently. Mary Berry calls them scon too - with two Queens saying it - must be scon.
