How early did you know your child had autism?

Ds is 6 months, I have always been concerned, since I got pregnant, that he may have ASD as my brother has it and so does my uncle.

He makes eye contact, babbles, responds to his name most of the time, cries for me and DP if an unknown person holds him, is smiling since 3 weeks and laughing since hust before 3 months. He can roll and sit independantly.

However, when in his highchair or on my lap he bangs his head back quite a lot, he hand flaps and pulls his hair and I'm just mildly concerned incase these are early signs.

So when did you know and what were the first things you noticed?

Hello just looking for some comfort to be honest. I have a 15 month old boy who is my first. He is very very full of energy, isn’t walking just yet, has always hit milestones however he isn’t talking yet. He bubbles and chats away but no words. For some reason I have autism in my head. He plays peekaboo and well point when he’s in my arms for me to take him somewhere, but it’s more like obsessive pointing of moving around rather than pointing to something that I’ve asked him to point to. He can’t do that. He won’t point to body parts or anything either that I ask him to. But he does point to go places. I think I just need some reassurance as I think I’m going slightly crazy. He loves family members and will go to them without looking back at me but is very very wary of new people and new surroundings, he tenses up and gets quite upset when we are in new surroundinngs. Thanks again

@Jennyb89 - just wondering how your LO is doing? I have a 14 month old who initiates peek-a-boo and has good eye contact, points for things but I’m just worried (I think it’s my anxiety but still).
He has two words and babbles lots but that’s about it.

My DS who was diagnosed at 2.5 was different from birth. At the time I would not have put it down to autism but looking back he exhibited sensory seeking behaviour from when he was born. He was very unsettled unless constantly bounced or swung and I remember even as a newborn not being to stop pushing him pram without him crying. At around 9 months I started to get concerned about his lack of any babbling at all and lack of social gestures, pointing , waving, clapping and any form of imitation. He would not engage with baby signing and I could not take him to any baby groups without him getting upset.

I knew from about 12 weeks old. I know, my sister is autistic..but im finding it very difficult to get an official diagnosis. She is so good at masking, so myself (single parent) and my parents are the only ones to see it.

I began to think it when DD1 was 18 months. Looking back, it was obvious from birth.

Hey can I ask what signs from birth please? Thank you

From very early on I thought something was not quite typical. By 9 months I knew there was an issue and was already fairly certain it was likely to be asd or similar. By 18 months I knew knew and other close family members didn't contradict me.

Hey what did you spot by 9 months please? My baby is 9 months and I’m worried please let me know x

I'm not the original person who said this but my son was showing signs of autism from birth. He always wanted to be held by me when awake. Although he was a term baby in the nicu so he was with other babies who were 27-29 weeks gestation (who would have been less alert and more sleeper than him due to their earlier gestation) so that might have explained that. A few weeks later it became more obvious as he wouldn't smile at all or make eye contact. When he was 4 months old a paediatrician looked after him for me for about half an hour and despite her and loads of nurses making a huge fuss of him he ignored them all. The paediatrician put in an urgent referral to opthamology because she thought he was blind. I knew he was autistic though. He didn't smile until he was 5 months old. He didn't walk until he was 2 years old.
