What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

I loved NYC on first visit, walking the streets in greenwich village on a warm summers night, it felt magical. I found San Francisco and Sydney to be slightly disappointing but we did live in Vancouver at the time (which we preferred to both cities).

Lived in Paris and never grew to love it - rude/cold people, went to Rome and loved it straight away. Loved the ancient history, the food, people etc

I think it was easier to like places before internet research, I went through a phase of over planning trips (all the must-dos), but now I prefer to explore when I get there and go with the flow, much more relaxing that way.

I’m very proud to see only a couple of objections to NZ 😊. So it’s either too far for most people to travel to, or it’s a beautiful country! I’m not biased!!

Corneliawildthing · 25/05/2019 23:58

I liked Budapest but couldn't get a decent meal....and the worst coffee ever Shock

GreenDragon75 · 26/05/2019 00:08

The Sistine chapel was a disappointment to me. It was packed and I thought some of the other churches were much more spectacular.
In fact Rome in general. I did like it but didn’t love it if that makes sense. Everywhere was so busy.

The Nile. Took a river trip to visit a temple. The temple itself was lovely but the river - oh my god. Four hours there and four hours back of field, goats, egrets, field, goats, egrets, field, goats, egrets...

Bored. Shitless.

StillMedusa · 26/05/2019 01:18

San Francisco. We were lucky with the weather and walked the golden Gate Bridge etc, and the Piers are lovely, but there were homeless drug addicts literally every hundred yards, staggering towards us...very sad, and the only place we felt unsafe at night (My DD2 and I toured the USA for a few months in 2017).
On the other hand Banff in Canada was so beautiful it was like a picture!

Frittata · 26/05/2019 01:57

Rome - lovely city but so expensive. Bath - couldn't park the car. Barcelona - beautiful city but got pick pocketed.

GiraffeMomma · 26/05/2019 02:06

The White House!

Couldn't believe how tiny it was, and it's just on a regular street! Plus there was loads of large men with sunglasses and black jackets with 'secret service' written on them- a bit against the point of secret surely?!

Total disappointment.

ilovesooty · 26/05/2019 03:17

I didn't like Paris or Dublin.
I went to Florence in February and loved it.
I loved Naples but wasn't impressed with Sorrento.
Egypt was horrible in terms of being pestered by people.
I spent nearly a week in Budapest and really enjoyed it.
I've been to Malta several times and never fail to feel uplifted by Valletta.

lastqueenofscotland · 26/05/2019 03:34

Venice is awful

soarin · 26/05/2019 03:44

Naples is a shit hole

roseinparadise · 26/05/2019 03:47

Paris. Unfriendly, high crime, without the romance and glamour I was hoping for.

nervousFTM · 26/05/2019 03:51

Taj Mahal. 6 hour journey each way to see it. I was more impressed by a gigantic waterfall we saw a few days before!

nervousFTM · 26/05/2019 03:55

Also Hong Kong (disgustingly humid and not a cards shop in sight - we were on honeymoon and trying to get a card for a wedding we were going to).

New York - pouring with rain the entire trip probably didn't help.

BiteyShark · 26/05/2019 06:43

Haven't been disappointed by many places because I still enjoying seeing them even if they are a bit meh. But two that I wouldn't visit again are:-

Vatican museum - wasn't worth queuing for.

Las Vegas - tacky

SnugglySnerd · 26/05/2019 06:47

Paris and Rome. Apart from the Eiffel Tower and the Colosseum I didn't find either city interesting or attractive or romantic or any of the other things people say about them.

Clawdy · 26/05/2019 08:26

The Alhambra, in Granada. It was pouring down which didn't help, but it just didn't feel as amazing as I'd been told.

isabellerossignol · 26/05/2019 08:58

There's a lot of Paris hate here.

I adored Paris. At risk of sounding like the mad screaming in the Sistene chapel troll I actually was reduced to tears standing in the Champs Elysee because I was so jealous of all the people around me who lived there.

In my defence, I was heavily pregnant, suffering from depression and generally hated my own life and where I lived. But still, I was just amazed that a living working city could be so beautiful.

Horsemad · 26/05/2019 09:01

@RaymondReddington I agree with you re the shipwreck cove in Zante.
The deserted ship that looks so beautiful & mysterious in the aerial photos is just a horrible rusting lump of metal closeup ☹️
Just grim.

I did like the Grand Canyon; had a helicopter flight over it and it was truly amazing to see from the air.

schnubbins · 26/05/2019 09:09

Niagra Falls and Disneyland Florida .

Blackorblack · 26/05/2019 09:15

I love Paris, Florence and Seville.

Was disappointed in the Lake District. Really beautiful but such a small area and so packed with visitors, and that wasn't in high season.

PanGalaticGargleBlaster · 26/05/2019 09:28

Naples is a shit hole

It's certainly not easy on the eye compared to other Italian cities but I thought the people, food and shopping were fantastic and the place is a hell of lot cheaper then rome or Venice.

StateofIndependance · 26/05/2019 10:29

I think basically if you went anywhere pre about 2005 you probably enjoyed it a whole lot more than if you went more recently. Every tourist site is now so much busier than it used to be and of course this ruins the experience. I presume it's a combination of cheap flights and the bucket list mentality. Travelling to Rome and Barcelona in the late 90s was hugely different to more recent trips in terms of visitor numbers at major sites.

Eustasiavye · 26/05/2019 11:46

I've been twice to the shipwrecked cove in Zante.
I couldn't believe how it has changed.
The first time it was a lot more inaccesible. You had to get off the boat and swim to shore, boats were banned from mooring up. Now huge packed boats pull up to the shore.
Even the number of tourists on the boat was far more pleasant years ago.o
This time we were packed in like canned sardines.

Bodicea · 26/05/2019 11:56

Rome is great if you aren’t bothered about ticking of the hit list of sites and you just amble around it on foot without much agenda. If you just make it a tick list of colluseam, Cathedral, fountain, steps, pantheon etc it isn’t as enjoyable.
