What famous places have disappointed you?

Or a landmark, artwork etc.

I guess mine is Plitvice Lakes in Croatia and Lake Bled in Slovenia. I've wanted to go for years as they both looked unbelievable and magical on photos, but going there just felt pretty ordinary. Very nice looking but I wasn't blown away. Blush

Anyone else been to either? What did you think?

Venice is wonderful. The most beautiful city in the world. Travelling around by boat and the lack of cars is really special. A great trip to the islands.
Malta was lovely in the run-up to Christmas - Valetta is beautiful, and it was great travelling on those old fashioned buses. Friendly people.
I loved San Francisco - beautiful, fun place.
New York - amazing place to walk around. Great view from the Empire State Building.
Stonehenge - incredible when you think how ancient it is.
The Pyramids - very close to Cairo, but fantastic to be able to see them in real life.
Paris - lots of beautiful, atmospheric parts, plus just the fun of French shops and cafes.
Poland - I've only been to Krakow, but enjoyed that enormously. Very accessible and relaxed, with friendly people. Did lots of culture.
Berlin - very interesting city with a good atmosphere, and spent ages in the fascinating museums. Lots of different types of Christmas market.
That covers a few of them. I should say that I went to ALL of these places outside of the summer months. I recommend it.

Monaco. Went on a day trip with my parents. Very humid and overcast. Asleep. Like tiny toy town. The few people we saw were ostentatiously wealthy. Big yachts? Bit sickening. But I'm glad I went coz you can't believe such wealth exists otherwise. Obscene really.

Similar was Salzburg. We were inter railing. Everyone looked very sneery. It's all too much of a sterile shrine to Mozart.

The weather in both places was oppressive and it was claustrophobic.

tobee · 25/05/2019 02:54

Oh yeah! Pompeii! Went on a school trip. It was on strike. Sad

Fraxion · 25/05/2019 06:08

Skye. Had wanted to go for ages, massively disappointing. Full of tourists and camper vans blocking all the narrow roads. The bridge to the mainland has ruined it.

As other posters have said, some places are better visited off season. We love Skye and generally go in March. Stunning scenery no matter the weather. We would never dream of visiting in summer due to the reasons above.

Bluesheep8 · 25/05/2019 07:01

A few people have said The Sistene Chapel. Did anyone scream?! Grin

Bluesheep8 · 25/05/2019 07:01

Mine would be Australia.

Aethelthryth · 25/05/2019 07:24

Another vote for the pyramids- they're in a grotty suburb of Cairo and surrounded by the world's most irritating hawkers. Also Windsor Castle- feels like a national conference centre with theme park overtones. Smells of institutional food. The Eiffel Tower is fundamentally uninteresting- 19th century version of the London Eye

Went to pamukkale in 1988 and loved it; but it sounds as though, like a lot of the places mentioned, it has been completely ruined by uncontrolled tourism

Some places mentioned, I think, are vastly improved by going out of season- we had Pompeii practically to ourselves at the beginning of December and it was very atmospheric

Eustasiavye · 25/05/2019 07:31

I visited Turkey in the 90s and found the incessant pestering of hawkers annoying. Never had any desire to go back.
I saw the Mona Lisa behind glass and was underwhelmed too. Loved the impressionist gallery though.

Istanbul. First the longest queue of my life to get into the country at the airport. Then a militariry coup with shooting in the distance and jets flying overhead really put a dampner on what should have been a romantic weekend away.

Stonehenge. All those crowds really took the magic out of it for me.

RaymondReddington · 25/05/2019 07:45

Zante and the shipwreck

It looks nothing like the pictures. Luckily we’d hired our own boat so could leave when we wanted, to explore the coast but the people on the huge boats / glass boats couldn’t.

Packed and pointless

WeMarchOn · 25/05/2019 08:16

@Bluesheep8 every time i see Sistene Chapel written I think of Sal Vulcano

Magmatic80 · 25/05/2019 08:20

Five days in Venice was four too many.

The Grand Canyon didn’t wow me as much as I expected. I think I couldn’t get my head round how big it was as there’s nothing to scale it against.

Sparklingbrook · 25/05/2019 08:25

Bit closer to home but-

Cadbury World and the Birmingham Sea Life Centre are both very ££ and not great.

Grammarist · 25/05/2019 08:33

The Vatican. Not sure what I was expecting but the place made me feel physically sick. It was the reality of seeing just how much wealth the church has and how they squirrel it away. They could be feeding, clothing and helping so so many people with all that money. I found it disgusting.

Ces6 · 25/05/2019 08:53

I go to Venice quite often and I never find it disappointing. You have to get off the main street though.

dingit · 25/05/2019 08:59

Lots of mentions of Stonehenge. Earlier in the year we decided to stop off there instead of just our usual drive by pointing it out to the kids. We marvelled how the car park was free. We ere then rendered speechless at the entry fee. £84 fucking quid for 4 of us. So it was a park and ride that day Grin

NeverSayFreelance · 25/05/2019 09:02

I have only been out of the UK a few times in my life and seen very little of the world sadly - but I was slightly disappointed with London. I'd spent all my life thinking it was some huge epicentre of the world and when I finally went last year... it just felt like Glasgow 😂 I'm not sure what I had expected.

HappydaysArehere · 25/05/2019 09:07

I am amazed that one post said The National Gallery and the Tower. Of London were a let down. Just shows you how different we all are. I think both are wonderful.
Perhaps it depends on your mood at the time as to whether you like it or not.

UrbanMage · 25/05/2019 09:11

The pyramids disappointed me as I was majorly into eygptology as a teen. Found luxor to be better

Rome as well. Dirty and too tourist driven. I prefer Rimini.

AnnaFiveTowns · 25/05/2019 09:17

Santorini - horribly overcrowded with people taking selfies with selfie sticks.

Smugglers Cove in zante for the same reason.

Paris, Barcelona, Venice- too many tourists and tat shops.

Basically, anywhere that easy jet has any flights to is generally going to be overcrowded and overpriced.

AnnaFiveTowns · 25/05/2019 09:19

Also, anywhere that cruise ships stop off at.

AuntMarch · 25/05/2019 09:19

Don't get the fuss about Greyfriars Bobby. (The pub is also way more expensive than the one down the road from the same chain.)

Grand canyon. Yeah ok, so it's big. But we saw other big holes on the approach which definitely took away from the impact of this main bigger hole.

LoveTheLakes40 · 25/05/2019 09:29

@happydaysarehere
We went to the Tower of London a couple of years ago. Loved it and spent more time than planned there, so much history.

Went in Feb, outside of peak tourist season though.

beanaseireann · 25/05/2019 09:34

Copenhagen

m00rfarm · 25/05/2019 09:43

I live Seville (Santa Cruz area). Bruges in the rain was fabulous. Venice was beautiful. Giants causeway also in the rain was magical. So I don’t agree with people on these. But I am not fond of Rome, Paris. Distinctly underwhelmed each time I visit.
