Cost of engagement ring

Recently had a chat with a colleague who is expecting a proposal soon, she said that she has been looking at rings for sometime, and was specifically only looking at rings that were 3k plus with as large a solitaire centre as possible...! She has made it clear to her boyfriend she is "worth it" and won't accept any less, her words, and he isn't to go anywhere near a high street jewellers or spend less than 3k!

For a moment I felt a pang of envy and the thought of owning such a rock, then I got a grip! my own ring is a white gold cluster and cost £700 in 2008. We went to look at different jewellers, and I picked out a handful of rings I loved. My husband then went pack and made the finally choice.

Cost didn't come into it. We didn't have a budget, just wanted to pick something that was durable and a bit unusual (I didn't want a solitaire).

Was the cost of your ring important to you? Or did you just go for something you loved too?

Photos welcome :)

My engagement ring cost 1K reduced from 3. I love the tanzanite's colour and the shape. It wouldn't have mattered how expensive it was although we were lucky as it was from my dad's shop and we paid our budget price. :) I love it and I wanted a ring I would be happy to wear for the rest of my life

A friend bought tanzanite jewellery for his wife years ago before it became much more expensive. It is a beautiful colour.

Thank you!! 😍 I love it too 😁

This is mine.

DH picked it and I love it. Plain, simple and timeless. It's from Sheila Fleet who does beautiful jewellery.

I think it was around £1.5k so quite a bit more than I would have spent!

Love all the rings on this thread, such a variety and they are all beautiful.

I've loved seeing these pictures! Mine is topaz and diamonds, was about £400 (from an Israeli jeweller through Etsy).

Before DH and I got engaged, every time I dropped those (not so subtle) hints of the type of rings I liked, they were always plain bands with a solitaire diamond, usually around £1k - £2k.

The ring DH bought me is totally different to that and cost a lot more, but it's the ring he chose, and I love it! (Although some days I do get a moment of panic that it may have fallen off my finger when I'm out and about!)

I also always thought my wedding band would be a plain band, but none of the looked right next to my engagement ring so we ended up choosing a full eternity ring instead.
