Cost of engagement ring

Recently had a chat with a colleague who is expecting a proposal soon, she said that she has been looking at rings for sometime, and was specifically only looking at rings that were 3k plus with as large a solitaire centre as possible...! She has made it clear to her boyfriend she is "worth it" and won't accept any less, her words, and he isn't to go anywhere near a high street jewellers or spend less than 3k!

For a moment I felt a pang of envy and the thought of owning such a rock, then I got a grip! my own ring is a white gold cluster and cost £700 in 2008. We went to look at different jewellers, and I picked out a handful of rings I loved. My husband then went pack and made the finally choice.

Cost didn't come into it. We didn't have a budget, just wanted to pick something that was durable and a bit unusual (I didn't want a solitaire).

Was the cost of your ring important to you? Or did you just go for something you loved too?

Photos welcome :)

Here's mine

My engagement ring and wedding ring are a set, and cost about £2500; I always thought I'd like an antique sapphire or something Art Deco, but when DH and I saw these particular rings, the way they fitted together seemed to sum up the way our lives had enmeshed. He could have afforded more, but my rings are pretty, practical and most importantly, remind me of us.

obviously if he wants to buy me diamond earrings I will not stop him

I think rings are so personal as you're the one wearing it every day. I look at mine and can get lost in it, I just love it. It's unique and beautiful and it's my favourite material thing in the world.

It was incredibly expensive, I've just had it revalued for insurance and they quoted a six figure sum. Insanity. However my dh was a very high earner at the time so as a PP stated it was kind of expected (by him) that he would spend this kind of money.

I did have final choice between two rings that he had sourced and I chose the cheapest if that makes a difference Grin

@Justcarrymehome that’s GORGEOUS! Where did you get it from?!

I didnt know my partner was going to propose so he chose the ring completely himself. I found out afterwards he'd spent months planning the proposal, and saving for and choosing the ring.

I think that style is more important than cost, mines a single solitaire and it's absolutely perfect for me. An old friend had thousands and thousands spent on her engagement ring by her wealthy partner... but its heart shaped which for me I couldnt imagine anything worse and I'd probably actually be slightly embarrassed to wear it.

I think overall the only important bit about cost is that they spend in line with what they spend on other things. Eg I wouldn't be happy if I had a partner who spent eg thousands of £ a year on a hobby then soent £100 on a ring as it would show where their priorities lie.

I also would be upset if I had a partner who bought me a ring in a style i didnt like as i would feel like they didnt pay attention to me or didnt understand what I do or dont like.

@FiremanKing - thank youSmile, it's very special to me.

There are lovely rings and stories on this thread. I think it would make a fabulous book!

Justcarrymehome · 25/05/2019 15:24

@FenellaMaxwell it’s from Amazon.

SunStruck what great taste you have! Yours is virtually identical to mine (except yours is bigger) & my wedding ring is an eternity band with vertical baguettes which also looks similar to yours.

Openupyourmind · 25/05/2019 15:57

Mine was £4250, 20 years ago now insured for £12k - the ring was really perfect on me - diamond not huge but the ring is quite chunky and heavy - I wear the ring every day it means so much to me. That and my wedding ring are the only bits of expensive jewellery dh has ever bought me, he has offered but I don't want anything else. As for the cost well it would have been weird if dh had insisted on something significantly cheaper as he was quite a high earner - it would have made me wonder about his generosity.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 25/05/2019 16:02

My ring was £167 in the late 1980s. I’d actually picked a similar, cheaper ring out but it had zirconias not diamonds and DH really wanted me to have diamonds even if they were small.
According to a calculator thingy I found, £167 then would be worth around £315 now! I had that ring for nearly 30 years before a couple of stones fell out and DH bought me a replacement ring. My new ring cost around £800.
Money can’t buy you love!

SunStruck · 25/05/2019 16:21

@fancynancyclancy thank you! :) yes always wanted square and 3 stones! I'm sure you're also loving yours! X

kingsassassin · 25/05/2019 16:34

I didn't want a big diamond - I have a vintage oval sapphire with tiny diamonds either side in a platinum band with plain platinum wedding ring.

DH proposed when we were both students and I think it cost about £250. He could have spent more, but we were saving for a deposit on a flat when we both started work on London after qualifying. We've now been married for 20 years and are mortgage free.

The month after we'd paid off the mortgage, I gave him a rado and he gave me an eternity ring he'd designed himself of a band which exactly matches my wedding ring in shape and height with sapphires and diamonds in it.

Drogosnextwife · 25/05/2019 16:46

@FunInTheSun2019

Thanks. I picked it myself. Dps taste in rings was questionable 😂

Applesbananaspears · 25/05/2019 18:33

sunstruck your is magnificent. I’m a huge fan of emerald cuts.

Eliza9919 · 25/05/2019 18:54

@holdupwaitamin thanks, yours is lovely!

Mine is from Carat London, they still have it on the website atm.

SweetPetrichor · 25/05/2019 19:07

My engagement ring costs just under £100 and we split the cost between us because I hate the idea of my partner buying me the ring when I want an equal relationship between us. It obviously isn't diamond, but I don't like anything shiny and would not have wanted diamond even if we had spent a lot of money on the ring. It is a Sheila Fleet lunar pearl ring, which suits me down to the ground. It's pretty and simple, while not being a shiny engagement style ring. We wanted to not spend much money on an engagement ring because then we can spend more on the wedding bands. And we're saving for a home deposit anyway so there's plenty other places that the money is better spent. It is still just as important to me. The price means absolutely nothing...I'd love him just as much if he put a haribo ring on my finger!

proseccoandbooks · 25/05/2019 19:08

My ring was 1/2 of a month's salary (of his) but he earns quite a lot. Thing is mine is a very small and delicate ring, with a small, single, diamond. It's perfect. I couldn't have chosen such a beautiful one.

GillBiggeloesHair · 25/05/2019 19:23

We bought mine from a pawn shop. I think it was about £60.
Bought my wedding ring in Turkey. Don't remember how much but it wasn't a lot.

SunStruck · 25/05/2019 19:53

@Applesbananaspears thanks me too!!! ☺️I also love cushion cut and Aascher (anything square and classic lol).

Lauzy86 · 25/05/2019 20:08

My DH did it all on his own but I did see the receipt when we got it insured. (It was over a months salary for him then) He went to the go to jeweller in our city and went for quality over quantity. It's very simple and not a massive stone but it is almost flawless and catches the light in the most magical way. The amount of research he did and the fact it was chosen completely by him just makes it priceless to me.

wheresmymojo · 26/05/2019 10:09

@Eliza9919

I absolutely adore your ring. Hope it's okay that I have saved the photo as if I ever get an eternity ring (or just buy a ring for myself!) I'm going to look for something similar!

Eliza9919 · 26/05/2019 10:16

@wheresmymojo It's on carat London now. It's about £100. I can't remember the name but if you search through the rings you'll find it. It might be 'Solana'.

The metal did discolour because I wore it in the swimming pool a couple of times and I sent it back and they replated in rhodium instead of whatever it came as so it's more hard-wearing so you might want to ask them to do that first when you buy it.

MoonstoneMagic · 26/05/2019 10:19

Honestly , this just disgusts me. Does she want to marry him for himself or does she just want to flash a rock and impress people? It's beyond entitled.

MoonstoneMagic · 26/05/2019 10:19

I love your rings btw!
