Where to buy a bed frame that's decent but won't break the bank (or, break!)?

I need to get a new kingsize bed frame, but only have about £300 to spend. The ones I've seen I like so far as either more expensive, or look flimsy!

Where would you get a decent but inexpensive bed frame from?

DP and I are both tall and overweight - and DP is large framed, even when he's not overweight - so together we weight loads! We need a sturdy frame.

I'd like a wood frame ideally, and DP's too tall to have a frame that restricts his feed hanging off the end. (What's the name for that bit of the bed that's the opposite of that headboard?)

Where would you go to get this?

TIA Flowers

I get all mine from amazon but read the reviews first. They are very useful.

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 22:40

dearohdearohdear9 that bed's nice (the second one) and Wayfair seems to have a decent range of styles, thanks :)

Does anyone know what the quality's like? I've never bought anything from them.

Have you considered eBay? I really wanted an affordable mid century modern style bed and found one from the 80’s. It’s super strong and has thick wooden slats that are welded into the frame. My mum always comments on how “they don’t make them like that anymore” whenever she sees it. Cost me £50 and then another £50 for a courier. It’s in great condition and I love it

Wayfair’s quality can be hit or miss. Definitely read the reviews first

Shizzy · 23/05/2019 22:41

What about Dunelm? I'm not sure about the quality of their bed frames but there are quite a few in your price range.

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 22:41

Just seems if you want cheap and also strong then you might have to not have it look exactly as you like

If I can't find what I want new, I'll go second hand.

I'd rather have pretty, sturdy and second hand, than go for something I don't like that's new.

I saw a lovely wooden sleigh bed, but without a footboard (unusually) local to me on ebay a few weeks ago. I bid on it, but not a lot, then forgot about it and missed out, gutted!

Have you considered eBay?

Yes, I've been looking on eBay for a while, but we don't live in a city, and beds that I like either don't come up very often here, or are quite far away so I need to add a courier fee on top.

Our last bed broke and we've been sleeping on a mattress on the floor for ages now! I'm fed up with waiting for a bed to come up on ebay and I'm at the "fuck it, I'll buy a new one" stage!

But, if I can't find it new, I'll have to keep hoping it something comes up, locally ...

Go secondhand for an oak bed and buy a new mattress for sure. My sister did this for your budget and got a beautiful bed.

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 22:50

FiremanKing that bed's a bit odd! I don't think I've ever seen a bed that does that before, have you? So, it looks like a wooden bed, but the wood is just an outer frame, and the bed actually has a hidden metal frame, very strange!

Your welcome Smile I think you can create alerts on eBay and schpock so it’ll tell you when a particular kind of item is up for sale. I think you’ll be able to find a decent one for £300 including a courier fee if it’s not too far from you. I paid £50 to have it collected from Surrey. I’m based Near East London. If you’re based in London I can pass the guys number on if i still have it

zoezipp · 23/05/2019 22:53

And yes definitely buy a new mattress if you can. The Hovag from ikea is divine

I totally agree with this in principle, but nothing's come up recently (except one I lost out on).

But OK, I'll take the nudge and have a look just now, keep your fingers crossed for me!

I have the oak version of this

www.furniturefactoryclearancecentre.co.uk/product/toulouse-painted-5-bedframe/

There’s several on this site. It’s really decent stuff for good prices. Much more solid than ikea!

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 22:58

If you’re based in London Nowhere near London, sadly - as far as this task is concerned anyway! We're not near a big city with loads of people chucking out old furniture.

It's a seller's market here for second hand furniture, on ebay. We sold our IKEA Expedit 5x5 shelves on eBay for £10 more than you could go to IKEA to get a new set! But the guy who won them was delighted as they were in great condition as as far as he was concerned, it saved him a day trip to IKEA (the nearest one is about 40 miles away).

Haha, gotta love eBay! The first bed that eBay showed me was this. I'd love to buy it just to see DP's reaction, it's so different to what he's expecting me to get, it'd be very funny Grin

(Not in my area though!)

Nope, absolutely nothing remotely local on eBay Sad

The M&S one BikeSkiRun linked to looks like it ticks all your boxes OP

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 23:11

So, are the Wayfair reviews trustworthy? There are a few I like the look of there.

That'll have to wait, unfortunately. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll come back to this thread when we can get a mattress. But, that one is £240 for example, I don't think we'll get a decent bed fro £60 unless we're very lucky!

FogCutter · 23/05/2019 23:18

I've bought a few things from wayfair with no issues.

resisterpersister · 23/05/2019 23:19

B19M I totally missed that one!

Also misread your post as "The M&S BikeSkiRun bed ticks all your boxes" and I've just been googling "BikeSkiRun bed" thinking that's an unusual name for a bed. Grin

How about this one from John Lewis? £155 in their sale. My husband and I are both large and we're very comfortable on one very similar to this:
