Favourite Children's Book

So sad to hear of the passing of Judith Kerr. The Tiger that Came to Tea is my favourite children's book.

What's yours?

Do you mean any favourite children's book, not just by Judith Kerr? That will take some choosing!

My favourite moment in a Judith Kerr book was the "walking Christmas tree", which Mog thought was alive and could talk. It became a family joke when our dad brought the Christmas tree to our front door.

The Alfie books by Shirley Hughes. Can't pick a favourite.

Supertato (and the rest of the series) by Sue Hendra.

I was never much of a reader but I read Fantastic Mr Fox and Danny, The Champion of The World more than once. If The Dark Is Rising Sequence counts as a children's book, then I liked that too.

From my Children... Paper Dolls by Julia Donaldson.

From my childhood... 101 Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. Looking forward to reading it with DDs.

Soubriquet · 24/05/2019 18:13

I love the gruffalo. And room on the broom. Love reading those books to my kids

I also love reading the blue balloon. It was one of my favourites as a child so I ordered one in for my two. Cost me a bloody fortune for a kids book that usually cost £1-£3

Patchworksack · 24/05/2019 18:20

Couldn't pick one! For my children The Everywhere Bear and Jack and the Flumflum Tree (hence username) by Julia Donaldson, and Once upon a Wildwood by Chris Riddell.

Have a few! Charlie Cook's Favourite Book, a Squash and a Squeeze, Paper Dolls, When Aliens Saved The World, Tyrannosaurus Drip... I don't have kids, I just work in a nursery 😁

NerrSnerr · 24/05/2019 19:15

I loved Peace at Last as a small child. When I was about 8 or 9 I adored a book called The Island Bus by Elizabeth Beresford.

implantsandaDyson · 24/05/2019 19:33

My kids loved Owl Babies.

mommybear1 · 24/05/2019 20:02

For my DS it's Room on the Broom at the moment for me it's a story by Enid Blyton I remember that it was in some sort of story book collection but sadly I can't remember the title and the book has gone missing I am desperately trying to locate a copy to read to my DS - it was called Susie and her Shadow - I used to make my Dad read it to me over and over Grin. The little match girl was close second!

wanderings · 24/05/2019 22:04

I too love Danny the Champion of the World.

ReaderofMinds · 24/05/2019 22:17

Rattletrap Car by Phyllis Root

newroundhere · 24/05/2019 22:18

I love the Dark is Rising sequence IndigoSpritz - in fact I came on just to mention it!

Witchend · 24/05/2019 22:32

All sorts.
Mystery at Witchend (Malcolm Saville)
The White Riders (Monica Edwards)
The Player's Boy/The Player and the Rebels (Antonia Forest)
And many more

newroundhere · 24/05/2019 22:32

Was it Enid Blyton's Lucky Book @mommybear1?

HappyPunky · 24/05/2019 22:33

My favourite one of DD's is Oi Frog. Mine from about the same age was the elephant and the bad baby.

wanderings · 25/05/2019 06:40

A Very Wicked Headmistress by Margaret Mahy. I read it recently, and was shocked at the innuendo was cunningly disguised in it! I remember our teacher reading it aloud when I was six.

Jacob Two-Two meets the Hooded Fang. I remember seeing it in the theatre as a child, as well as reading it.

Phoebe and the Hot Water Bottles: a lovely book, beautifully illustrated with 1970s fashions, and now very rare and expensive. Notable things about it were Phoebe's loving but very busy single father, Phoebe's way of dealing with a fire, and giving children puppies as presents. Wink

Ant and Bee, by Angela Banner. I first learned about places in the world from "Around the world with Ant and Bee".

Puddle Lane: a set of Ladybird books written to help children learn to read, with characters and stories far more funny and interesting than Biff, Chip and Kipper! My DH and I collect these.

Bluesheep8 · 25/05/2019 06:53

All of the "my naughty little sister" books. And The Magic Faraway Tree by Enid Blyton.

mommybear1 · 25/05/2019 06:54

@newroundhere thank you for the link! Sadly it wasn't that collection I remember another story in there The Spinning Hummingtop I'm going to have a search via the link you sent to see if I can locate it - thank you again Thanks

FrannySalinger · 25/05/2019 06:57

It's a new one but I recently read Into the Jungle with my animal obsessed dd and it was absolutely magical, I know we'll be reading it again and again.

When she was little our favourites were The Snail and the Whale (makes my cry) and Oh George!

BikeRunSki · 25/05/2019 06:59

Orange Pear Apple Bear
The Paper Dolls
The Sophie series
Danny Champion of the World
Beezus and Ramona

Different books for different stages of childhood. Sos you gorgeous children’s books, I love reading to my DC, but at 7 and 10 they both mostly read to themselves.
