So sad to hear of the passing of Judith Kerr. The Tiger that Came to Tea is my favourite children's book.

What's yours?

Joan Aiken was always a favourite of mine.

Her short story 'the serial garden' was my absolute, hands down favourite.

My favourite to read to my children was
Cat in the Hat
My own favourite as an older child was Anne of Green Gables.
But as a teacher, parent and Grandparent l loved all Judith Kerrs books and have read them aloud on more occasions that l like to count.

As a child, I loved the My Naughty Little Sister books and Dilly the Dinosaur.

My current favourite to read to DD is Five Minutes Peace by Jill Murphy. I identify with Mrs Large more than any other literary character.

@TheBitchOfTheVicar I too loved the Serial Garden, with the Brekkfast Brikks! I had to stop myself spelling "brikks" like that. They don't make cereal packets like that now.

Just William and Enid Blyton.
RickyTickyTavi by Rudyard Kipling.

I've remembered that as a child, I simply loved the story of the Ugly Duckling (I felt for him because I was teased a lot at school). As well as the book, we had this lovely record of it which told the story in an unusual way, where the narrator was a male friend of Mrs Duck. Here is one scene I particularly remember (you could imagine this dialogue on MN):

Narrator: I was so upset by Mrs Duck's anxiety over her last egg, that I went to see another mother duck. When I told her all about Mrs Duck's peculiar egg, she said:

Mother duck (with passion): Oh, I'm sure it must be a turkey's egg. The same thing happened to me once, and I've never had such an anxious time!! That little creature spoiled my whole summer. It quarrelled with its brothers and sisters the whole time, and simply refused to go on the pond and learn how to swim. Oh, dear oh dear oh dear, never again. I think your friend ought to get rid of that egg straight away.

Narrator: But Mrs Duck refused to listen to such an idea.

Mrs Duck (furiously, with dramatic music): Oh no, certainly not! I can't do that. I've never got rid of an egg before, and I'm not going to start now. I'm going to hatch that egg, even if I have to spend the whole summer sitting on it. (Her voice rising to a crescendo) Yes! Even if I have to spend the whole summer sitting on it!!!!

Just after the ugly duckling had hatched and been chased away, the narrator said: "It was then that I had to go on a long business trip, right down to Egypt, and it wasn't until the following spring that I arrived back in Denmark." He then meets the ugly duckling who tells the story of what happened to him.

Just recalling this has brought a tear to my eye; and looking back, I think the references to Denmark and Egypt were really clever.

Anything by Enid Blyton when I was a kid and currently my DD (just turned 5) loves Amelia Jane. I've told her about the Magic Faraway Tree but I can't find my copy so will have to buy it again.

BenWillbondsPants · 26/05/2019 09:55

DS - The Dancing Tiger by Malachy Doyle
DD - The Lion Who Wanted to Love by ?? (had to read this every bloody night for a year)
Mine - Charlotte's Web

Seashell80 · 26/05/2019 11:02

Loved any Enid Blyton as a child, but my absolute favourite children's book is The children of Green Knowe by Lucy M Boston, I read it every year and recently discovered that they had actually released the 80's BBC adaptation on dvd, so I no longer have to resort to grainy YouTube videos to watch it 😊

As a child of the 80's, I adored the Ladybird books and cassettes of classic tales. The Happy Prince was a favourite in our house, despite having some incredibly sad moments. Although they were "retold in simple language", some of them had quite advanced vocabulary: "Toad's next appearance was as a limp and miserable prisoner in the dock of the magistrate's court." Snow White was one I remember vividly, especially the scene of the dwarfs mourning her. "Even the birds came and wept to see her lying so still."

babypossum · 26/05/2019 13:11

No Bed Without Ted. Universally loved in our house.

SecretNutellaFix · 26/05/2019 13:23

The Little White Horse is still a firm favourite of mine, even if I have grown up.
Also When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit by Judith Kerr, Thursdays Children by Rumer Godden and I loved the famous five books when I was between 6 and 10.

GiveMeFiveMinutes · 26/05/2019 13:33

The Velveteen Rabbit. I still have my copy from when I was a child.

AllGoodDogs · 26/05/2019 13:38

Where The Wild Things Are... I even have my very own Max now Grin

Also Paper Dolls and The Gruffalo. DS1 went through a stage of Peace at Last where I read it to him every night for months. He knew the book by heart long before he could read. It was quite a party trick!
