Does anyone have a genuine work from home job?

I don't need to work at the moment but would like a job I could do from home that I can actually earn a bit of cash with. I'm currently suffering with crippling anxiety and the thought of going to a job interview terrifies me. Just wondering if there were any genuine work from home jobs out there?

I think most decent work from home jobs come from working in an office in that sector first. That’s certainly how I got mine. I know you can make bits and pieces of money from things like matched betting but regular jobs are harder to find.

DH does - he’s a web developer. The company have an office but most of the staff work remotely. There aren’t many though - what’s your work history?

runningtogetskinny · 23/05/2019 20:56

I worked from home for a few years as an on line tutor, learners uploaded their assessments and I provided feedback on the learning portal. Depends on what you're qualified to do as to whether you can work from home

SinkGirl · 23/05/2019 20:57

Virtual PA work exists, if you have experience

SolitudeAtAltitude · 23/05/2019 20:59

I am also into web development, I can work where there's wifi

Still needed to come into an office for interview! And also once or twice a week for meetings

We run a property company from home. Not suited to an anxious personality though; very high risk.

I have a job (technically office- based) that I can do from home as all my internal customers are based in the US / Canada, so me being in the office or not makes no difference. All my work is databases and emails.

bebeboeuf · 23/05/2019 21:09

I can work from home as I like but choose to go into office mostly to have some company and save on my own electricity Grin

It’s office based and should I want to do more working from home I have a job that would work well free lance

Marking on-line courses for a college

VoteJadot · 23/05/2019 21:55

Freelance translator. Decent money, very family-friendly.

SnipSnipMrBurgess · 23/05/2019 21:56

I work from home for a call centre

Zoobedoo · 23/05/2019 21:59

You'd still need to have a job interview to work from home (I've had them via Skype before) unless you did something self employed. Are you getting any support/help atm with your anxiety?

I can work from home in my field but it's pretty niche. What's your experience and what would you like to do?

Mixingitall · 23/05/2019 22:02

I’m an account manager for a software company, so am on a home based contract, visit clients when I like and only have to be in the office once a month for a team meeting. Most software company’s will have many roles that can be done from home/office. I now couldn’t take a job where I would be expected to be in an office 9-5 Monday - Friday!

museumum · 23/05/2019 22:04

I do but it doesn’t involves a lot of pitching/interviews so wouldn’t solve your problem.

cmt1375 · 23/05/2019 22:05

Three of the vacancies listed here are homebased

HunterHearstHelmsley · 23/05/2019 22:05

Yep. Working for a charity in project management. I do sometimes have to do site visits but can decline if they don't suit. I go to the local office if I fancy it.

I had two different roles in the organisation before I got this one.

zebrapig · 23/05/2019 22:10

I'm 100% home based as our entire company is virtual and doesn't have any offices. I'm a platform assistant for an e-learning company, I do front line user support so stuff like resetting passwords and live chat.

GinUnicorn · 23/05/2019 22:11

Yes I only go in one day a week but I was there several years before I negotiated flexible working.

AtSea1979 · 23/05/2019 22:12

@chocolateworshipper Is the online marking all year round? Or sorting of this time of year for exams?

BoeandBall · 23/05/2019 22:18

Thanks for everyone's replies. I like the idea of marking, although I'm not a teacher. Does this matter? I am about to graduate from a degree, though. @chocolateworshipper can you point me in the right direction for this if possible please? Also, @VoteJadot, how do you get into the translation?

It’s not my actual job, but I make quite a bit of extra money writing materials for the local qualifications authority. I work as a lecturer, so got into it via being asked to sit on a qualifications development group for my subject area. My work are fine with me doing it “on the side” as it doesn’t impact my day job, and ultimately benefits them in a roundabout way.

This thread has a few ideas

CherryPavlova · 23/05/2019 22:46

If you want exam marking you need to be a qualified teacher whose taught the syllabus recently. At least for GCSE/A levels.

CherryPavlova · 23/05/2019 22:47

If your degree is languages you could do online/Skype tutoring.

namechangedforanon · 23/05/2019 23:15

Read the chat "make £10 a day in May " in Money ... many people are earning way more in decent WFH set ups
