Looking to buy a large American style fridge freezer. Anyone got one of these?

I have a Meile one,the fridge fits together with a huge freezer so looks like a fridge freezer but they can be separate too.

We have a Samsung side by side that we are very happy with. it is plumbed in and we use it for water all the time and for ice fairly often.

In an ideal world I'd have liked a slightly bigger freezer section but it's not been a big issue even though we are a family of 6.

The filters nag you to change them every 6 months (you can just reset the timer if you want though) but we used to use Britta filters before and now we don't.

I'd say that veg keeps longer than in our old fridge and you NEVER need to defrost the thing. It's got some kind of voodoo magic that means that even when DS leaves the freezer door part open and ice covers everything, it magically removes it when you close the door.

I would not go back to what we had before.

Plumbed in Samsung side by side which we had to have recharged i.e refrigerant replaced a few weeks ago because it was no longer freezing/cold. It worked for a few weeks....and now, it's temperamental.
I suspect it's a leak which can't be fixed (service engineer prediction). Fed up. I've ordered a replacement for delivery next week. It also seems to now be £11 cheaper than when I ordered it this morning. It was £1599! Hmm

Original Samsung was only 7 yrs old - they don't make them like they used to imo.

Onewonderfulmoment · 24/05/2019 21:03

We used to have an LG. Had it for about 15+ years and it was fabulous.
Now have a Hisense and I hate it. The interior lighting broke when it was about 10 months old and we had a lot of problems getting it fixed - dreadful after-sales service.

If you have space, I’d recommend getting two free standing appliances - one fridge, one freezer. Gives the look of an american style but with a much bigger capacity. I don’t like the look of the ice/water dispensers. Ours are AEG.

I did a LOT of research and to answer any questions about ice in freezer drawer. The most temperamental part of a ff that dispenses ice and water is that the ice is in the fridge (taking up fridge space).

The Fischer paykel also comes in black and in non water.

AMA about American ff 😂

I have a Samsung this one

I love it.

Celeriacacaca · 26/05/2019 13:05

Watching with interest as our fridge freezer died last night...Confused

celtiethree · 26/05/2019 13:13

Fisher & Paykel in black, plumbed. Recent purchase. Just love it esp the wide fridge at the top. I’d never buy a side to side again.

Daphnesmate · 26/05/2019 19:50

Celtiethree, I've got my eye on the one, I think you're talking about, it's number one on my list currently but if it is the same one, it is very expensive and I am hoping it will pop up in a sale or something...I think it is currently just over £2000!

OP posts:
celtiethree · 26/05/2019 20:47

Daphne it is v expensive (I think you have the right one) but my kitchen is v old and tired and needs to be replaced - so I decided to get the one I really wanted so that it fits in with my longer term plan. Also I had my last one for over 14 years so if this one lasts as long cost per year is reasonable (that's my justification Smile).

It's just lovely though, catches your eye everytime you are in the kitchen.

bliminy · 26/05/2019 20:50

I spent about double what I'd planned when I bought our last fridge freezer. The previous one had not really had the layout I wanted, and the various plastic shelves and drawers had broken pretty regularly and cost a lot to replace. I decided it was worth spending more for quality and to get what we wanted.

Having said that it was $2000 rather than £2000 (which actually isn't that much of a difference with the exchange rate as it is currently!).

Daphnesmate · 26/05/2019 20:54

I think I could stretch to it, I just need to justify it and if it came up in a sale, I could justify it even more! I don't think it will though because it is a new model out. Also, it says that the top and sides are silver? It won't be going into a casement so will stand alone - one side and top wont be that obvious but the other side will be on display...just a cosmetic thing really, haven't actually seen this fridge/freezer yet and wondering how it will look.

OP posts:
celtiethree · 26/05/2019 21:08

Sorry can't help you - mine was unpacked and just slotted into the space and I can't see the side - it's too heavy to take out for a photo.

Daphnesmate · 26/05/2019 22:02

That's okay Celtie, I've got to go and look at it anyway before I purchase anything...can I ask you where you bought yours from?

GiantKitten · 26/05/2019 22:38

Ours is unplumbed (for bigger freezer space) LG. It’s 10 years old & although it does take up a lot of space I love it Smile

celtiethree · 27/05/2019 00:06

Daphne - John Lewis as they removed/fitted at no extra cost - was just easier than adding on all the extra charges from other suppliers.

kaytee87 · 27/05/2019 00:23

Samsung plumbed in, we have soft water so don't need to change the filter.

PoohBearsHole · 27/05/2019 21:14

Keep watching the JL website and take advantage of either their no interest credit which the do over 10-12 month’s occasionally or cashback on FP products :)
You wouldn’t regret the purchase!

Daphnesmate · 28/05/2019 09:41

Thanks PBH, we have a few months yet, to wait and see if any deals come up.
