Can you buy generic naproxen instead of Feminax Ultra?

Feminax is £££ which is annoying as I never usually buy branded painkillers, but can't find out via Google if a generic naproxen exists? Boots don't seem to have any online.

Will have to suck it up if not as it does help me.

Naproxen is Prescription only medication so I doubt it

Is that what feminax contains?

Looks like Boots do a version. I'm guessing that might be cheaper? Or get someone who's going to the US to buy you a pot!

Do you mean lysine? You can buy generic ibuprofen lysine from supermarkets etc

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 22/05/2019 09:23

Boots do a general Naproxen style tablet; but it's not pure Naproxen, that's prescription only.

AnyoneButAnton · 22/05/2019 09:28

That’s interesting to know. My father uses it for gout but his local GP practice is a nightmare so a non-prescription alternative is worth knowing for absolute emergencies.

Thanks all - a bit confused though @SpartacusAutisticusAHF did you find it online on the Boots site? I couldn't.

Unsure what lysine is, is it a variant of ibuprofen? Will google..

@AnchorDownDeepBreath have you tried to Boots one you mention, is it as effective as Feminax? Or are the ingredients too different.

I brought a lot back from the States

Langrish · 22/05/2019 09:48

Naproxen is prescription only because it’s such a strong painkiller and can interact with other meds.

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/05/2019 09:51

It is in Feminax though so you don't actually need a prescription.

I just thought there might be a cheaper option.

It’s prescription only except for period pain.

Ask your gp for a prescription?

It's ibuprofen lysine. Most supermarkets do their own as does boots and possibly Superdrug. It sometimes marketed as for migranes. Like the nurofen version is sometimes migraine and I also think sometimes back painConfused

Look at the front of the box- says ibuprofen lysine

Thanks all, I will check out a big Boots in person and see if I can find theirs. If not I'll just buy the Feminax, it's not worth a GP appointment and prescription cost to NHS when I can get it for about £6 over the counter - was just seeing if I could save myself a few bob!

I think it's mistaken to call it 'prescription only' though as you can obviously buy it otc. Seems illogical to me. I'm buying it for period pain but there's nothing stopping people buying it for other pain if they need it and forget to get their prescription filled etc.

Yeah, the Feminax that works is the one with Naproxen. Have never tried the other.

Blankscreen · 22/05/2019 10:11

When I was prescribed naproxen for migraine I also had to take another medication to protect my stomach.

DH got prescribed it for gout and also had to take the extra meds so probably worth going to your gp to get it prescribed if you take it regularly.

UnicornRainbowsRain · 22/05/2019 10:11

The other one is worth trying. I was so happy when I finally tried it! Makes a huge difference

AbsentmindedWoman · 22/05/2019 10:18

@Blankscreen were you taking it daily for more than a few days?

I think it can be rough on the stomach (same as ibuprofen) but thought I was ok taking it for two days each month, as per the packaging warning. I drink some milk first/ never on an empty stomach.

@UnicornRainbowsRain I will look it up, glad it worked for you - horrendous pain is soul destroying!

TheLazyDuchess · 22/05/2019 10:41

I have to take omeprazole or similar before I take naproxen, but not sure if that's standard or because I have acid reflux.

listsandbudgets · 22/05/2019 10:53

Yes you could try a migraine medication.

I have a long ex boyfriend who used to take feminax as he discovered (I have no idea how or why perhaps he was desperate!) that it seemed to be the only OTC medication that helped with his migraines Confused
