To come down hard on DS’s baby voice

Scion457 · 21/05/2019 17:47

DS is 11 and keeps speaking in the most god awful baby/sassy voice. It is driving me bonkers! His best friend does it too. He’s on the Xbox and keeps slipping into it. I’ve been ignoring it thinking he’ll stop of his own accord but I can’t listen to it anymore. I’ve given him 3 chances and then the Xbox goes off. He’s down to his last chance.

What harm is it doing though?

Scion457 · 21/05/2019 17:49

It’s diving me insane is what it’s doing!

Oh leave him be! The wind is hardly going to change and his voice stick like that!

LoisLittsLover · 21/05/2019 17:49

God no, that would drive me bonkers. I am really strict on dd using a baby voice and she is 4. Be as strict as you need

FiremanKing · 21/05/2019 17:50

At that age my friend and I used to put on a fake french accent. A bit like allo allo before it’s time.

FurrySlipperBoots · 21/05/2019 17:51

Is he using it in convo with his friend or with you?

Justajot · 21/05/2019 17:51

I would too. My DD has picked up saying "Waa-waa" in a baby voice if I say no to her. Definitely from a friend and not something I can allow at home. It's just too irritating.

Bunnybigears · 21/05/2019 17:51

I don't see the harm as long as he is not doing it in inappropriate situations. My DS 12 slips into an American accent when speaking to his friends and sometimes uses a baby voice with me if he is really tired and wants a cuddle. Being 11/12 can be hard work so I let it go.

Bringonspring · 21/05/2019 17:53

Oh heavens his not in a park drinking cider.....! I’m sure you’ll look back and say ‘do you remember when that voice was the most trying thing we put up with’

Scion457 · 21/05/2019 17:53

He does it mainly with his friend. If he does it with me I say I can’t understand him and he reverts back.

It’s like nails on a chalk board to me.

At that age my friend and I used to put on a fake french accent. A bit like allo allo before it’s time. that’s funny,I actually think I’d prefer that!

This would annoy me too! Only an hour ago I told my 7 year old to stop doing a whiny baby voice complete with a "waaaaaah" à la George Pig.

Mummyilovejokes1 · 21/05/2019 18:08

My ds(5) also does the "waaa waaa" in a baby voice if he doesn't get his own way, along with silly baby noises/voices! Its so annoying.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 21/05/2019 18:14

I had this argument with myself yesterday.
DD is 9 and does a verrrrry annoying baby voice. I snapped at her yesterday over it. She was then upset and I wondered if I should have let it go as I don’t want to nag when really she isn’t doing anything wrong. It’s just annoying.

Shylo · 21/05/2019 18:16

Baby voice drives me mad too - if it’s directed at me I just keep saying ‘I can’t understand you’ until my DS or DD speaks properly , but amongst friends is just let them get on with it

Justajot · 21/05/2019 18:18

I think it's a bit like eating with your mouth open. Whilst it doesn't do any harm, it's just horrible for people around you. I wouldn't let that go either.

Scion457 · 21/05/2019 18:20

Glad I’m not the only one with zero patience for it. To be fair I’ve been very tolerant of it but it’s been going on for months now and I just can’t listen to it anymore!

If it wasn't you talking about the x-box (we don't have one) I'd wonder if you were ds' best friend's dm. They do it too.
I said to him once "what do your friends at school think?" and he said "I have a school voice and don't use it there." Which made me realise it's at least partially deliberate.
I am consoling myself with the thought he has maximum around 3 years before his voice breaks and I don't think you can manage a baby voice once it's broken. Grin

Bluerussian · 21/05/2019 18:26

He'll outgrow it.

Loopytiles · 21/05/2019 18:28

DC1 has a friend who does this a lot and DC1 and friends sometimes copy, grating and I tell DC1 to stop it.

CRbear · 21/05/2019 18:32

Squash it out. Maybe some people grow out of it but I know too many adults who can’t have done as they do this and it’s utterly ridiculous and I’m embarrassed for them

HopeClearwater · 21/05/2019 18:36

It’s a very year 6 thing. Tel him to speak properly or not at all. It’s irritating - why should you have to put up with it?!

TinselAndKnickers · 21/05/2019 18:45

My 11 year old brother does this too as well as a fake American accent. It's a really annoying age Hmm

FurrySlipperBoots · 21/05/2019 23:18

Is it the stress of Sats coming out do you think? I'd let him talk like that with his friends but stamp on it with you. It drives me nuts even when 4 year olds do it!

Cherrysoup · 22/05/2019 06:59

A boy at school does a wannabe gangsta accent. Mum says he has a normal middle class accent at home. It’s very annoying. He’s 15!

scrappydappydoo · 22/05/2019 07:05

My DD is 11 and does this - I’m trying to stop it because although she does it deliberately most of the time, there are times she accidentally does it and doesn’t realise. The reminding is almost as tedious as the voice but I don’t want her to get picked on at school.
