I need an American to answer a random question about chips please

What we in the UK call crisps are called chips in america
What we call chips are call fries
And we have 'French fries' - skinny chips. We also have chunky chips, like you'd get in a pub.
Do they have those on America? Are they also called fries? Or something different?
If not I plan to introduce "English seaside chips" to the states ASAP.

Are home fries sautéed potatoes with vegetables? I occasionally have them with a thick tomato sauce (Marinara type?!), adding chopped red bell pepper & spinach, served with a poached egg on top. A shake of Tabasco, sriracha or spoonful of chipotle chilli mayo makes it!

sashh · 19/05/2019 17:51

I'm confused MissConductUS. Don't Americans buy potatoes, peel and chip them and then fry them?

I meran I'm not expecting them to use beef dripping but still.

OK fun fact for everyone Mcdonalds fries in the UK are made with potatoes, salt and cooking oil, in the US they have over 20 ingredients.

KneelJustKneel · 19/05/2019 17:58

Mcdonalds fries are different!? 20!??!!?

Tasty burger is head and shoulders above Five Guys, but may only be in Boston.

I have consulted with DS, the burger expert, who confirms that it is a Boston area chain. He has seen the one at the Fenway many times, but has never eaten there. He says they do have an excellent reputation.

We pan fry them to make home fries, or yet another potato dish called hash browns, but deep frying in oil is seldom done in American homes.

chemenger · 19/05/2019 18:43

Why would fried need beef flavouring (natural or not)? I haven’t been to McDonald’s since I’ve been in the USA so I can’t comment on what the fries taste like.

Tasty Burger is a small Boston chain and is the official burger of the Red Sox. I’ve also eaten the official pizza of the Red Sox and it is superb (Regina Pizza, another Boston favourite).

chemenger · 19/05/2019 18:45

I’m not sure deep frying is done that much in British homes, I’ve never owned either a deep fat fryer or a chip pan, my mother had both.

EntirelyAnonymised · 19/05/2019 18:52

I agree re UK FiveGuys being an oily mess. My teenaged DD was so looking forward to trying it (loves all things fast food) and unfortunately, it she was vomiting within 10 mins of eating it. Yuck.

MattMagnolia · 19/05/2019 19:28

Americans don’t seem to have seasides, they say ocean instead of sea, but how are our seaside chips any different from traditional chipshop ones?

MissConductUS · 19/05/2019 20:15

@CatCatDog home fries are pan fried a little hotter than a sauté, but very similar to what you described. Your recipe sounds delicious! 🍽

LookImAHooman · 19/05/2019 20:17

the crumpets have cinnamon 🙄

I love crumpets
I love cinnamon
I do not love this

MissConductUS we have hash browns here Smile

chemenger · 19/05/2019 20:21

The cinnamon crumpets, which I was quite excited to find since I like crumpets and cinnamon, are a poor imitation of crumpets, just not very nice.

Fantail · 19/05/2019 20:22

Come to New Zealand:

Crisps = chips or chippies
Chips = chips or hot chips
Fries = skinny chips*
Skin on chips = wedges

We also have hot dogs on a stick and also not on a stick, both in batter. The one on a stick is what you have at sport games with your (hot chips).

I think our fish and chip shop chips are better than the ones I tasted in London**

  • waiting for someone to write “fush and chips”

** I did not eat all the chips 🍟

chemenger · 19/05/2019 20:26

We went to the seaside (Cape Anne, just north of Boston) last week and ate steamer clams (awful) and lobster rolls with skin-on skinny fries. Fish and chips was on the menu too. It might be called “the shore” here? What is missing here are seagulls, you can sit on a bench eating completely unmolested.

missyB1 · 19/05/2019 20:36

I’m sorry fantail I was bitterly disappointed in NZ when I ordered a hotdog and got given that deep fried unpleasant sausage on a stick!
And I didn’t find a fish and chip shop (or fosh and chop) Smile
Although there was at least 10 of every other kind of fast food place on every street. I have never seen so many KFCs in one town. 🤔

MissConductUS · 19/05/2019 20:39

@chemenger We love Cape Ann! DS is just south of there in Beverly. When we visited Rockport last fall there were lots of Seagulls.

Turners n Salem is our go to seafood restaurant in the area.

www.turners-seafood.com/

Fab chowder and lobster rolls. 🦞

chemenger · 19/05/2019 20:41

We were in Rockport, no seagulls, where have they gone? We did see a duck.

SnagAndChips · 20/05/2019 00:12

In Australia, crisps are called 'chips' and chips are called 'hot chips'!
Makes perfect sense (except in our family we still call the cold ones, crisps)

SarahAndQuack · 20/05/2019 00:34

I like poutine (or at least the version I had in the UK, which was with cheese curds and was delicious).

The best fish and chips are from Yorkshire, obviously. Chips must be deep-fried in fat. If they're pan-fried, they may be tasty, but they are not chips.

Do Americans do fat chips deep-fried?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 20/05/2019 00:45

God, I miss poutine. I still remember with great clarity the picture my friend drew for me of the chicken on a can of gravy Grin. Home made poutine is absolutely amazing, shame we can't get cheese curds here.

I love Five Guys, I could easily eat two burgers. @EntirelyAnonymised why was your daughter sick?

MissConductUS · 20/05/2019 00:51

Chips must be deep-fried in fat. Do Americans do fat chips deep-fried?

Do you mean animal fat, like beef tallow? This was more common when I was growing up. Now everything is deep fried in some type of vegetable oil.

chemenger · 20/05/2019 01:26

Americans deep fry everything, fried pickles and fried Brussels sprouts are common appetisers here.

Fantail · 20/05/2019 06:48

MissyB1 - I never said the hotdogs were good Smile

Surprised you couldn’t find a fish and chip shop though. There’s three within 15 minutes walk from me.

Were you in Auckland? There’s only 3 KFCs in Wellington City.

Some suburbs are fast food hubs :) Northland a suburb in Wellington has a Burger Wisconsin, Hell Pizza (local companies, a fish and chip/Chinese take away, Pizza Hutt and an Indian restaurant (very good, but very unassuming). Take-always yes, but either owner operated or local chains.

PollyShelby · 20/05/2019 06:55

Never had a bad five guys. Best burger chain easily.

I love the peanuts and milkshakes.

stucknoue · 20/05/2019 07:17

They have chunky chips (called chips) in the Pacific Northwest. Generally served with fish!
