overnight oats

If I soak oats in milk overnight are they overnight oats?

Or do they have to be a faffy combination of ingredients?

Supposedly overnight oats have more health benefits, not sure whether it's because they're not cooked, or because people put chai and stuff in the mix...

I mix oats and natural yoghurt. Leave overnight then add fresh fruit in morning. That's it! You can add fruit overnight if you want and any number of weird things but basic is sometimes best!

greenelephantscarf · 18/05/2019 18:10

that's basically all.
the oats soak overnight in whatever is your preferred liquid and go gloopy.
spices/fruit are optional.

greenelephantscarf · 18/05/2019 18:12

I like to soak mine in 50/50 water/kefir and add a little cinnamon and raisins

What greenelephantscarf said. I usually soak them in a combo of milk and Greek yogurt and add some chia seeds, flax seeds and honey.

Likethebattle · 18/05/2019 18:13

They are vile, I just add oats to yoghurt in the morning as i prefer it.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/05/2019 18:14

I do mine In Greek yogurt, a spoon of peanut butter, and put frozen fruit on the top. By morning, the juice and yogurt has all absorbed. I love overnight oats.

Oats contain more resistant starch when uncooked, so they don't raise your blood sugars as much as cooked oats do.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 18:19

Isn’t that Bircher? Cup of oats, grated apple, honey and yoghurt. Leave in the fridge overnight. Mmmmm.

DulcieRay · 18/05/2019 18:22

I mix mine with tinned or frozen fruit and either yoghurt or milk. Sometimes I add some flaxseed for the fibre. I've been known to add hot chocolate powder and peanut butter but it's basically pudding at that point.

Daisydoesnt · 18/05/2019 18:22

I soak mine in apple juice. If we don't have any juice, then water will do. I make enough for three or four days at a time, they keep really well in the fridge. You don't need to get at all faffy!! Adding other things in the morning that you like (some berries, grated apple, granola, nuts, dollop of yoghurt) just makes them more interesting.

anothernotherone · 18/05/2019 18:23

Thanks everyone.

Being realistic I am not going to be faffing with chai or other seeds, I don't think there's anywhere for many miles that would sell kefir, and if I put Greek yogurt in the fridge other people will eat it (large household including teenagers).

Two of my kids and I like porridge, I'm trying to lose weight and one of my porridge fans has quite a restricted diet, and I read that overnight oats had more benefits, but then the recipes that go with those claims are full of exotic seeds, nuts and other types of non dairy milk, so I wondered whether simply soaking oats instead of cooking "qualified" them as overnight oats.

@Daisydoesnt

I do mine with juice too. Really loving it with pineapple juice and raspberries, OJ or AJ are lovely too though

TigerCubScout · 18/05/2019 18:25

So are all you overnight oat fans eating this cold? Cold porridge?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 18:27

It’s more like muesli!

anothernotherone · 18/05/2019 18:28

Yes we'll have to see whether the kids will want it cold, I suspect less fussy very hungry nearly teen will and fussy younger child who won't eat pasta because it feels like ears in your mouth won't...

I think I will though.

OP posts:
elsabadogigante · 18/05/2019 18:31

I do muesli. Apple juice and vegan yoghurt and frozen fruit.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 18/05/2019 18:32

You can get keffir in any big supermarket - it's just yoghurt.

Can you not just tell your teens to leave the yoghurt or as a PP said, make a big batch as soon as you've bought the yoghurt and it will last you several days?

Mine are- one chopped apple, just under half a cup oats, yoghurt added till thoroughly mixed, pinch cinnamon. Takes about 3-4 min to make and excellent transportable breakfast as I often eat at my desk in the morning.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 18:33

Ooooh I bought a tub of kefir and quark by mistake and it’s bloody lovely! I use it in smoothies.

anothernotherone · 18/05/2019 18:36

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff I'm sure you can - I'm non UK and very rural, the big supermarket only started stocking hummus about a year ago WinkGrin

I soak in apple juice overnight then add either yoghurt or milk before eating. Sometimes I Add blueberries or chopped banana

anothernotherone · 18/05/2019 18:38

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff yes I could, I won't though, I don't like making any foods off limits to family members - my own emotional baggage but meh, I'm not going to do that

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 18:41

Soaked is really nice. I add berries too and I could happily eat it as desert. I also add nuts but then I could live on nuts and berries 🐿

Aimily · 18/05/2019 18:41

Depending on my mood depends if they are soaked in almond milk (oh preference) semi skimmed milk or natural yoghurt. I usually put raspberries blackberries and honey in the tub too, that then goes to work the next day for breakfast as neither of us gets out of bed in time to eat 😂

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 18/05/2019 18:43

I’m going to make some tonight. I’ve been inspired!

anothernotherone · 18/05/2019 18:45

Oh I could use quark, the supermarkets here have always been full of 97 types of quark... Is that better than milk I wonder...

OP posts:
greenelephantscarf · 18/05/2019 18:47

it has a different texture than porridge. more gloopy.
try it. you might like it
