overnight oats

If I soak oats in milk overnight are they overnight oats?

Or do they have to be a faffy combination of ingredients?

Supposedly overnight oats have more health benefits, not sure whether it's because they're not cooked, or because people put chai and stuff in the mix...

I like kefir but it doesn't keep well does it? I can only get a litre bottle in Tesco but it says use within 24 hours of opening. So while I like it, i don't buy it often.

greenelephantscarf · 18/05/2019 18:54

I keep my own kefir granules so can make as much or little as I need.
it keeps quite well in the fridge ime. you could put it jn a smoothie or mix with fruit puree for a lassi type drink

I was very cynical til I tried it.

Make mine with oat or semi skimmed milk, a little cinnamon, chia seeds (not always) and tiny splash honey or agave syrup.

Then add raspberries and blueberries (buy bags of frozen, its cheaper) and leave to soak.

Dollop of yoghurt and chopped pecans in the morning. Yum.

Or instead of berries a chopped banana and a few chocolate chips.

Cornishmum00 · 18/05/2019 19:08

I use greek yoghurt or quark and some frozen fruit, its one of my favourite breakfasts. If you dont want to make a food off-limit perhaps make your portion as soon as you get the yoghurt home then rest of tub is for anyone?

Proseccoagain · 18/05/2019 19:28

Oats soaked in milk with chopped apple and dried apricots, yummy!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/05/2019 19:33

Kefir is a bit like fizzy yogurt.

I live overnight oats, it’s been used for donkeys years in Switzerland, actually invented there as Bircher Muesli.

I buy the Tetra pack from Waitrose, keeps in the fridge for over a week

BarbaraofSevillle · 18/05/2019 19:54

I think the term 'overnight oats' is just a twatty one for Bircher muesli, which is decades old. A bit like how suddenly stock, which people have been making since time immemorial, is now 'bone broth'.

megletthesecond · 18/05/2019 19:58

Oats, with a teaspoon of sugar and linseeds soaked in milk or soya milk overnight.
I add banana and pecans in the morning.

Saucery · 18/05/2019 19:59

I hated the overnight oats with yoghurt and berries - really sharp and gloopy. I put semi skimmed milk on mine and nothing else and it’s really tasty. I use Waitrose own brand basic oats as Quaker etc seem too finely milled or something and go a bit gloopy, so worth experimenting with different kinds.

hugoagogo · 18/05/2019 20:11

I have tried a little pot of bircher from Waitrose, it was horrible.
Are overnight oats much different?

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/05/2019 20:33

Horrible is very subjective.

I've never tried the Waitrose one, but I love the Swiss version.

adagio · 18/05/2019 20:40

Our weekday recipe is oats, semi skimmed milk, a bit (not too much as it’s too yogurty) of cheap big pot ‘natural Greek yogurt’ which no one will eat on its own so lasts in the fridge all week, plus Handful of nuts or seeds if we have any, plus fresh blueberries, raspberries, strawberries in season. Generous dash of almond essence and it’s lovely. To be honest I could take or leave the yogurt, but without the almond it’s rank! Smile. Both me and DH take it to work every day, in a tub. Sometimes resort to frozen berries but it’s not as nice.

MagentaRocks · 18/05/2019 20:43

I don’t like it with berries but I have oats, yoghurt, chia seeds, little bit of almond milk and a chopped up banana. I make two days worth in advance and make them in Tupperware pots. It keeps me full too.

CakeNinja · 18/05/2019 20:50

I’m the same, I don’t make anything off limits to anyone in the house. Can’t do it, my mum was very much the kind of person who bought a shop but begrudged us kids wanting to actually eat any of it, emotional baggage here too.
Granted, we can afford the outrageous cost of our weekly food shop but I’m glad our dc eat a very wide and varied, interesting diet and can replace things they’ve eaten if I had something particular in mind for a specific meal and they’ve eaten it, the supermarket is pretty close!
However, gloopy cold starchy almost gelatinous overnight oats are definitely not for me Envy I’ve tried but find them vile in every form I’ve tried. I have texture issues with food anyway but have these a go many times only to have to bin them. Raspberry and cacao nibs was the one I thought I’d really love but to me they really have the texture of wallpaper paste mixed with frogspawn Grin

Housewife2010 · 18/05/2019 20:59

I soak 200 g of low fat natural yogurt with 40g of porridge oats. After soaking for 4 hours+ the yogurt loses its sourness and the oats are soft and creamy. I like to add flaked almonds and a punnet of crushed raspberries.

MrsTeach · 18/05/2019 20:59

Stupid question incoming but I've never heard of overnight oats before! Do you just use normal porridge oats?

tinkering · 18/05/2019 21:04

I like mine with some Greek yoghurt, milk, a tiny drizzle of honey, and a spoonful of peanut butter!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/05/2019 21:06

Yes, you need normal oats, the quick cook ones disintegrate too quickly.

It keeps in the fridge for a week or so, just top up with fresh berries.

cpjoli · 18/05/2019 21:07

I put mine in a splash of milk, then natural fat free yoghurt and frozen fruit. Takes a minute to make and it keep me full all morning.

Spanielmadness · 18/05/2019 21:08

I leave mine out overnight even with yoghurt in and it’s room temp by morning, wouldn’t be keen on it cold from the fridge. If your kids prefer 30 secs in the microwave will warm it without cooking it.

MrsTeach · 18/05/2019 21:08

Thank you Smile trying this tonight!

utterflapdoodle · 18/05/2019 22:01

@BarbaraofSevillle Exactly! I live in Germany and soaking your oat based musli overnight Bircher musli style is just the normal thing to do. Nothing new or modern about it.

When I first arrived here I remember telling a German friend that I didn't soak my musli before I ate it. He looked at me aghast and said "What! You eat it dry, like a horse!". Shock

Ever since then I had images of nose bags of dry oats and I always soak my musli overnight in yoghurt. I think there are possibly more health benefits as oats and other grains are more easily digested that way as well as being nicer to eat. After all would you eat uncooked porridge oats?

DulcieRay · 18/05/2019 23:05

What is the difference between Bircher muesli and overnight oats?
