So I was called ignorant.....

By a man

What was my crime you ask......I dared go to the self service check with a trolley and be in the queue before him.

He tried to get me out of queue, by "helpfully" pointing out that trolleys should be in the manned til queues.

Then again, he pointed out, it was for people with baskets. (It's not, I go there every week.)

When I made a "hmm" sound, he called me ignorant.

We got to a till each within seconds of each other. He then proceeded to complain to the young lad manning tills about lack of staff, london (didnt catch the rest of that) How it should be baskets only.

He then finished off by telling the lad, he'll be making a complaint. (As if the lad cares)

So that's me going hell. Ah well, atleast I'll be warm.

I think self service tills should be for baskets only. The area is not designed for trolleys.

Sparklingbrook · 18/05/2019 16:14

I also think self serve tills are for baskets. Unless they are the ones with a conveyor, or you have about 5 things in your trolley.

Prequelle · 18/05/2019 16:14

Was it a trolly or a basket self service though? Some places have both.

Grumpbum123 · 18/05/2019 16:15

This pisses me off I have a back condition I cannot carry a basket. Recently I had a trolley with 10 items in and was told very officially that the self checkout was for baskets only despite no signs saying so which I pointed out. Bearing in mind I go frequently to M&S and probably do the vast of my shopping there. I did email to complain and they supported me

Grumpbum123 · 18/05/2019 16:16

Plus it was fun, I have never complained about anything in my life before

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/05/2019 16:18

It was for trolleys or baskets. I've seen people put a weeks worth of shopping through them. Nothing was ever said.

TheCanterburyWhales · 18/05/2019 16:20

Are you the OP?

SaraRyder · 18/05/2019 16:21

Shit, name change failed.

The only way you will know for sure is to ask. I know of one Asda that you will get told you can't take your trolley into the self service bit. There's not really enough room for a start.

SecretWitch · 18/05/2019 16:25

Tali zat you? 😂 Btw, I think this chap should have minded his own business. Not up to him to police the check outs.

Prequelle · 18/05/2019 16:25

I've seen people bring trollies through the ones at my local Tesco but I know they mustn't really be able to do as if everyone did there would be no room. There's no room to tuck them under out of the way

Cobblersandhogwash · 18/05/2019 16:26

My local Tesco and Waitrose is for both trollies and baskets but only the shallow trollies.

SaraRyder · 18/05/2019 16:28

You got me SecretWitch

Next time I'll use the basket on wheels. Happy medium.

I had just collected my very tired 3 year old from nursery and popped into tesco next door. As she was tired I sat her in a trolley, collected my 4 items and went through self service.
An elderly lady told me off as I shouldn't have my trolley there. I just pointed out to her that my very tired (and slightly grumpy) daughter would not fit in a basket.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 18/05/2019 16:30

Even though you are right there is nothing to stop you using self check outs with a trolly it is intensely annoying to be stuck behind some one who is dwalling their way through their weekly shop in the self checkout i'm afraid. Most people see them as the fast way to get out of the shop. Which is probably why he was making noises about should have been in the manned line. I prehaps wouldn't have said anything but i would have found you quite inconsiderate. (However i don't use supermarkets just the little express around the corner and yep some people seem to fill 3/4 bags and still use the self service)

grump i totally understand your point, and if you've only got ten items your going to be as quick as a basket.

So maybe it should be baskets or trolleys but only a certian number of items. Or maybe could just be considerate and realise that self check outs are the gast lane and aren't really designed for full shops

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 18/05/2019 16:36

It were small Lidl trolley not even half full. One bag for life used. Hardly a weekly shop.

If he was in a rush, he could have asked to in front. I wouldnt have minded.

Serialweightwatcher · 18/05/2019 16:37

I'd use a basket in self service - it doesn't say not to

Serialweightwatcher · 18/05/2019 16:37

I mean trolley - ugh

When I had my Moving and Handling training we were told that baskets are the work of the devil and contribute significantly to back problems, so I always use a shallow trolley even for Bits. He was an arse. Maybe he had back ache from always lugging baskets about with him?

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 18/05/2019 16:40

Ours is designed so trolleys slot over the basket shelf

RiftGibbon · 18/05/2019 16:43

Ours doesn't say. You'd struggle with a large trolley, but a small one or a basket is fine.

MissMary0fSweden · 18/05/2019 16:43

I always take trolleys through SS- at any of my local stores. I don’t want to use carrier bags so I leave it all in the trolley and then stick it in a giant bag in my boot.

LadyRannaldini · 18/05/2019 16:43

I often put a basket in a shallow trolley then go through the basket check out,
Why do people respond to people like him, it just encourages them, develop a withering, sneery look, they really don't like it!

TheWernethWife · 18/05/2019 16:44

I have sciatica and use a shallow trolley for my shopping as I sometimes find it hard to carry a basket. During the week I probably only buy a couple of items. Was in Sainsbury's in a "basket" queue next to a lady who had a little baby sat in the trolley, some busybody pointed it out to her that this was not for trollies, Lady seemed very upset so I supported her, the cashier wasn't bothered in the slightest.
