So I was called ignorant.....

By a man

What was my crime you ask......I dared go to the self service check with a trolley and be in the queue before him.

He tried to get me out of queue, by "helpfully" pointing out that trolleys should be in the manned til queues.

Then again, he pointed out, it was for people with baskets. (It's not, I go there every week.)

When I made a "hmm" sound, he called me ignorant.

We got to a till each within seconds of each other. He then proceeded to complain to the young lad manning tills about lack of staff, london (didnt catch the rest of that) How it should be baskets only.

He then finished off by telling the lad, he'll be making a complaint. (As if the lad cares)

So that's me going hell. Ah well, atleast I'll be warm.

I'm just jealous you've got a lidl with self-service! looking forward to them coming in here.

Don't waste any more head space on it OP - imagine being that man and having such an empty life/aggressive attitude that you resort to insulting and arguing with people in a shop because you have to wait for a few seconds to put your shopping through the till!

bet he wouldn't have been as arsey to your face if you were a 6 foot man...

Sagradafamiliar · 18/05/2019 18:30

I'd rather be behind someone with a few items in a trolley than a full to capacity, overflowing basket.
That bloke was still sounding off because he didn't get the reaction he wanted but his pride wouldn't let him just leave it. Bet he felt like a right dweeb afterwards 😂

Topseyt · 18/05/2019 18:54

There is a sign up at the self service checkouts in our local Tesco saying no trollies at the self service checkouts. It is largely ignored and the staff hardly ever enforce it.

I have an arm injury (held together by metal plates) that makes carrying one of those metal baskets difficult and painful. So I use a shallow trolley, sometimes at self scan checkouts and always at the scan and pack ones.

I did once mention to a member of staff that excluding all trollies from the area made it difficult for some people, and that the other Tesco stores in neighbouring towns do not make this exclusion. Nor do M & S. They told me to just use the trolley at the self scan checkout.

Lookingforpizza · 18/05/2019 19:38

@thumb did you mean to be so rude? Most self checkouts are not designed for trolleys, I appreciate some people have legitimate reasons to use a self checkout with a trolley but just because you think the world revolves around you and what you like to do isn’t a good reason. It’s called being considerate.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 18/05/2019 20:18

@Lookingforpizza yes of course she did.Confused. Here ALL the self service checkouts are designed for basket or trolley.

ManchesterBorn · 18/05/2019 20:34

it wasn't rude, it was a fair comment about "common sense".

It's not considerate to wheel your trolley onto somebody's feet. It makes no difference to you at all if someone has a trolley or a basket at self-service checkout unless they push you out of the way with it but they could do that with a basket too

NoSauce · 18/05/2019 20:39

I do this all the time as do other shoppers I see. It’s never crossed my mind not to. Tbf there’s at the most 13 items or so. Usually less, if there were a lot more I would use a checkout with an operator.

Thertruthisoutwhere · 18/05/2019 20:54

The staff in lidl have previously told me to use self service with a trolley so in light of that yanbu!

Troels · 18/05/2019 22:35

They have basket only self service at our Asda and self service ones with a belt for trolleys. The staff will direct trolleys over to the belt.
I try not to use either, and use the manned tills and I don't work there. The more we self check the less staff they will need.

whoops sorry

Exploration2018 · 18/05/2019 22:53

I once had 13 items on a till which was 10 items or less. The man behind was very angry and told me "it's people like you who cause problems in the world!" Bit harsh.... 😂

I get trolleys ar permitted in the self serve, it it's a pain in the arse, snarls it all up, and pisses me off too. I'm sorry- but I don't blame him. Trolleys should be banned, and self serve have an item limit. There nothing worse than someone with a full trolley playing shopkeepers and constantly making the bloody thing go red and needing help.

Sissy79 · 18/05/2019 23:09

SD1978, Mate if you are getting that riled up at someone else’s shopping, might I recommend home delivery Grin

SD1978 · 18/05/2019 23:19

I'd not say anything, but it is annoying- I'd hardly say an internal FFS and some ignorant twat who takes up all the till assistances time is getting particularly riled personally.

Sissy79 · 19/05/2019 00:31

Not really taking up all the sales assistants time because actually the self service tills mean that they can employ 1 person to man 6 tills, instead of 6 people to man 6 tills. No civilian has had training to use those things like an employee would. No civilian has the secret code to fix the bagging area. So you should be annoyed at the supermarket for trying to shove 6 people’s work on to 1 person really, not the poor sod just trying to do his shopping.

SnowsInWater · 19/05/2019 02:22

You can use the self service tills with trolly or basket here (Aus). If people want to do it with a fully trolly that's up to them. There are also express tills with a limit on the number of items (10 or 12?) so if you want speed you go there. I would only comment or expect comment if someone went through the express till with a full trolly.

blubblubblub · 19/05/2019 02:38

I always use SS, whether I have a trolley or basket. I don't want my stuff getting squashed, so it's faster for me to pack my bags myself in the SS than to repack what a staffer has packed (and hold up the queue), or micromanage their packing. Our store doesn't seem to train staff how to pack bags anymore as their packing is atrocious.

Namaste6 · 19/05/2019 02:54

Jeez do people really get upset about these things? He should have been well and truly ignored and left to get on with his miserable day.

SimplySteveRedux · 19/05/2019 04:25

An elderly lady told me off as I shouldn't have my trolley there. I just pointed out to her that my very tired (and slightly grumpy) daughter would not fit in a basket.

@frippit GrinGrinGrin

Decormad38 · 19/05/2019 05:08

I never use a basket in a supermarket because my back would spasm with about 4 items! I do use self service. Many people do with trolleys. It doesn’t seem any slower and supermarkets are basically encouraging it. So what. He needs to relax.

withaheyandahoandaheyheyho · 19/05/2019 05:59

I got the eye of judgement from some bloke not long ago because I didn't realise one of the manned tills was basket only. Stood behind him for about five seconds until I realised and moved on, but apparently it was Not Good Enough.
So that's you and I going to hell together, OP. Clearly, the patriarchy has moved on from keeping us in the kitchen and is now policing supermarket queues Grin

Iruka · 19/05/2019 06:51

it’s common sense not to use the self scan for a trolley of shopping
Not in any of my local supermarkets it’s not. They all take trolleys and there is plenty of space.

whenyouaredemoon · 19/05/2019 07:05

It's about how much stuff you have not how you've transported it to the checkout. A trolley with 4 things in: fine. A heaped basket with about 30 things in and you take ages packing them just right and then can't find your purse: less fine. Especially when you do it in a town centre M&S Food at lunchtime when people are just trying to buy a sandwich and a drink and then get to sit in the sun for a few minutes before going back to work.

Though any response to poor shopping etiquette that goes beyond eyerolling where the person can't see you is also not fine. No one is doing a food shop for fun; there's no need to make a drama out of it.
