Do you have an electric toothbrush?

... and would you recommend it?
The dentist has told me to get DS one as he is about to have braces fitted.
All the reviews I read online seem to say they need charging every couple of days, so I’m ideally looking for one that holds its charge a bit longer and isn’t too pricy.

We all have Oral-B ones, the basic £50ish jobs. I had mine first and DM recently replaced it for Christmas (it's one of my favourite possessions so not as shit a gift as it sounds!) with one of the much fancier ones.

Quite frankly not worth the money, the one a third of the price did the job admirably (and was waterproof) We charge ours about once a week.

I'm on my second, I've never had to charge it more than once a week - basic Oral B. Would thoroughly, thoroughly recommend. Manual brushing feels disgusting now, like it's impossible to get my teeth clean.

Oral b one. About £50 I think. Dp and I share the handle and swap heads and have to charge every 4ish days. Dd has the kids one and maybe charge it once a week. I agree that manual cleaning just doesn't feel clean now.

WhatHaveIFound · 17/05/2019 17:07

My DS has an Oral B one and he only charges it weekly. He had braces fitted a few months ago so lots of extra brushing. As well as the electric toothbrush he has interdental brushes, mouthwash and a single tuft brush to do his gum line.

Our bathroom is starting to look like a dental store!

allworthwhile · 17/05/2019 17:08

Oral B, £25, charge it less than once a week.

Wormentrude · 17/05/2019 17:09

I have a Phillips Sonicare Healthywhite. It's three years old and I love it. My teeth definitely feel cleaner when I use it. If I use a manual toothbrush, they still feel a bit furry.

Thelineisadottoyou · 17/05/2019 17:10

I have an oral b one that was £20 on Amazon. You can also buy special orthodontic heads for them that are a godsend for getting food out of braces. I’ve only seen the heads on amazon but bet more places sell them. A water pick is also a godsend for braces or oral b superfloss (normal floss is just too much hard work!).

sanityisamyth · 17/05/2019 17:11

DS is 5 and he has an electric toothbrush. It's not a rechargeable one (has batteries in it) but doesn't seem to need new ones very often. It's an Oral-B one.

lhw92 · 17/05/2019 17:14

I paid around £50 for my Oral B one - works really well, teeth feel so much cleaner than using a manual. I charge it about once a week
Def worth it!

Chancewouldbeafinethlng · 17/05/2019 17:15

I’ve got one of those expensive rose gold oral b ones and I love it!
I got DH a less expensive but same brand one and tbh it’s pretty much exactly the same.
The charging is easy. Just plop it on the charger after you are done.

dun1urkin · 17/05/2019 17:15

Philips sonicare
Needs recharging every few weeks, does a great job, last one lasted for around 10 years I think (am one my second one now)

OldAndWornOut · 17/05/2019 17:18

I did have quite a nice sonic one, but got fed up with recharging and so on.
Now have a battery one and just buy another when the batteries run out.

PoptartPoptart · 17/05/2019 17:41

Thanks all. I think I might get myself one too after all these positive reviews!

i just plonk mine on the charger after use. manual feels yuck and not clean enough. ds has had one since 7 years old?

Leftielefterson · 17/05/2019 18:08

Phillips Sonicare here. I love mine. If I ever forget it when I’m away or travelling I just don’t feel like a normal toothbrush cleans my teeth as well.

Seniorschoolmum · 17/05/2019 18:10

Superdrug £4.99 with rechargeable standard batteries. New head every 6 weeks costs about £4.

ThatLibraryMiss · 17/05/2019 18:12

Another Oral B user here. I think they do a much better job than manual toothbrushes. My dentist is always very impressed by my oral hygiene. She says the ones with a pressure light are best, so you know when you're pressing too hard.

They're always on offer somewhere so check Superdrug, Boots, supermarkets and Amazon. Same for the heads - I noticed yesterday that they're on offer in Superdrug.

I keep the charger plugged in to the shaver socket in the bathroom, and keep the toothbrush base on the charger.

SciFiScream · 17/05/2019 18:14

We have one electric toothbrush and 4 heads (one for each of the family) this means it gets used 16 minutes per day. When it was new we'd get three, maybe four days out of a charge. It's now about 7 years old and when not in use is on charge, otherwise we wouldn't get a full 8 minutes use in the morning/night.

My teeth do not feel as clean when using a manual. To the extent that we now pack the toothbrush if we go away.

We don't swap the toothbrush heads as often as recommended (mainly to cut down on plastic use) so I sterilise the heads occasionally and inspect them for wear and tear, only replacing them when I really have too.

My toothbrush head still looks brand new, DDs looks as thought she's been cleaning bricks as it's all worn. Time for new ones I think!

SciFiScream · 17/05/2019 18:15

£20 in Lidl at the moment for an Oral B electric toothbrush.

Goonergirl14 · 17/05/2019 18:19

I have an Oral B cost me £20 and it is definitely improving my gums! I always used to have Philips Sonicares which are more expensive but my hygienist advised me to switch to Oral B but nothing too expensive and I much prefer it though it does need charged every few days which is no hassle.

PawPawNoodle · 17/05/2019 18:23

I've got a fancy Philips Sonicare affair that sings you a song - got it on sale on boxing day in Boots. I love it as it isn't a circular head.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 17/05/2019 18:28

The circular heads are supposed to be the best ones though. Mine has a timer, so you know when you’ve brushed for the right amount of time.

mononokeswolf · 17/05/2019 18:41

Get a USB charging one! Mine lasts weeks between charges :)

UnicornDaisy · 17/05/2019 19:03

I got a Tesco own brand one, it was around £15 and I charge it every 5-6 days. Find it to be very good, in particular for the money x
