...you can only ban safe abortion.

“I can't really think of any other situation in life where a stranger would be allowed to make such a life changing decision for an individual”

That’s why it should be the woman’s decision. Nobody else’s.

But doctors provide the service, so they will always get final say.

I posted yesterday about those Senators who would make sure that their mistresses had abortions available to them. In today's paper I see a picture of a protester saying exactly the same thing except it adds the Senators daughters to the mistresses.

Peregrina · 16/05/2019 21:58

Needless to say, all these senators are middle aged and white.

IME a lot of pro-life advocates tend to be white women .... of a certain age. But when I looked into the data, support seems to be fairly even among male and female respondents; black and white respondents also tended to be quite similar (if anything, blacks were more conservative on this). The big outlier were Hispanics, who are largely Catholic so would be more pro-life I guess.

Pew gives a solid breakdown of opinions on abortion in America: www.pewforum.org/fact-sheet/public-opinion-on-abortion/

Biggest predictors seem to be religious and political affiliation (probably don’t need a poll to tell us that though)

Peregrina · 17/05/2019 10:21

An interesting analysis Mango, and not exactly what I would have expected. In the UK although we have religious fundamentalists, I don't yet think they are quite as powerful as the American ones.

BTW I think in the UK that its illegal for anyone to procure their own abortion - so sending off to Holland for some abortion pills could land you in prison. Not just in N Ireland.

Passthecherrycoke · 17/05/2019 10:36

I agree it’s different in the U.K. where religion is less of an issue and an influence. We have total arseholes who gather outside our GP waving anti abortion banners (GP doesn’t do abortions obviously , but refer for them) they’re not religiously affiliated they’re just women hating cunts

That’s the difficulty for me personally too. However, I do not think I have the right to impose my views on other women. I want to be able to choose for myself-and I want them to be able to choose for themselves.

No, neither do I. If I were a legislator I wouldn’t seek to do so but I know my vote would probably trouble me for the rest of my life, couldn’t help feel that way.
