Alabama abortion law

Alabama has just voted to ban abortion in almost all circumstances. I can't quite believe that I'm living well in to the 21st century when something like this happens.

No exception for rape or incest.
Shock

BlueThursday · 15/05/2019 07:25

Some aspects of life really are going backward; particularly for women Sad

Limpshade · 15/05/2019 07:25

If I hadn't felt like we're now all living in a dystopian novel, I certainly do now. My heart goes out to the women in Alabama.

Roussette · 15/05/2019 07:34

Absolutely disgusting but no surprise that 25 white men voted this in.

Similar in Ohio where there is an 11 year old rape victim being forced to have a baby.

The US is on its way to Gilead. Let's hope this is one aspect of American life that doesn't make it over here

HPLikecraft · 15/05/2019 07:36

This is so awful.

The World is becoming increasingly right wing, intolerant, racist, misogynist and inhumane. I don’t get it.

PaintBySticker · 15/05/2019 07:38

Yes I’ve been shocked by this too. And the fact that it was all men who voted for it makes me sick. The arrogance.

Gammonfacedharridan · 15/05/2019 07:38

Just like Northern Ireland then.

Redact · 15/05/2019 07:40

I couldn't believe it when I heard it on the radio this morning but I see I didn't miss hear that there are no exceptions for rape or incest. Absolutely disgusting

leftovercoffeecake · 15/05/2019 07:50

I feel sick to my stomach. And it makes me so mad that it's a bunch of men who have decided on this.

sam221 · 15/05/2019 07:54

This is absolutely horrifying and utterly disgusting! I would suggest to all women living in any of the so called 'Red States' they should leave immediately!
And I know that sounds crazy but these legislations are so instically designed to strip women of their basic rights over their bodies, that stark counter measures need to be given as a response.

How will there 'glorious' shitty State survive without women?
I think that other sane States should set up some kind of housing/shelter program for women and girls to move into from redneck hell! -with benefits/galas/charitable activities to support these centres.

I truly cannot wrap my head around the fact, that in 2019 women in a supposedly 'civilised' nation, can be treated like f**king cattle?(apologies for the expletives)

Roussette · 15/05/2019 08:04

It's a challenge on Roe v Wade which protects a womans right to liberty and abortion. If it goes to the Supreme Court, with the right wing conservative judges Trump has installed there, it could become a possibility that abortion will be illegal in the whole of the US.
Luckily I imagine this will be tied up in legalities for years. (hopefully)

The evangelical Christians have a lot to answer for over there. Back to the 1950s is what they want

CannyLad · 15/05/2019 08:06

The laws in Northern Ireland date back to the 1800's and early 1900's. They need to be challenged but it's shocking that places are looking back and reviving oppressive laws. In NI women can travel to the UK for an abortion at least. I think I read that if you're resident of a state that has banned abortion then you can't even go out of state without risk of prosecution. Draconian seems the only word fit to describe what's happening.

CannyLad · 15/05/2019 08:08

Gah sorry, of course I meant travel to Britain, what with NI being in the UK. I'll never get that right first time.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 15/05/2019 08:09

Disgraceful

Sickofphd · 15/05/2019 08:11

Anyone else reminded of the Handmaid's Tale and how Gilead began? Sadly we don't seem too far off from that kind of reality...

Roussette · 15/05/2019 08:15

Oh yes. The similarities are not lost on women threatened by this law. Countless pictures of protestors dressed like this...

TooStressyTooMessy · 15/05/2019 08:17

It is terrifying. For some many reasons Sad.

RedForShort · 15/05/2019 08:32

It's truely awful.

I'm not too sure how I'm so shocked, considering the states rights are being taken away. But it is terrifying to read that rights that were fought for and gained can be removed at the sweep of a pen.

Women and minorities are very vulnerable to the actions of white men who don't like how equality (slightly) removes some of their privileges. (Privileges they think of as God-given rights as they see it.)

Thunderwing · 15/05/2019 08:44

A question is asked about embryos used in fertility clinics, the response makes it crystal clear that it's not actually about the 'life of a baby' but in fact it's all about control of the women who carry them.

formerbabe · 15/05/2019 09:03

I've noticed that the vast majority of people against abortion are pro the death penalty...as a pp said, its not about life, it's about controlling women.

ineedaknittedhat · 15/05/2019 09:21

Lives are going to be lost through backstreet abortions, self induced abortion, suicide and abandonment of unwanted babies. I wonder if it will be possible for affected women to get hold of the abortion pill. It seems that illegal drugs are easy enough to obtain, so why shouldn't medication be?

Lightnightsannoyingme · 15/05/2019 09:22

Fucking fucking scumbags.

(Sorry, I've been trying to think of an intelligent comment for 20 minutes. Then I just tried to think of a comment that wouldn't get me banned from Mumsnet!)

MrsPear · 15/05/2019 09:30

This a ban on safe abortion not abortion. Did anyone see the view on ectopic pregnancies? One of the key supporters claimed that they would not be treated as the embryo just needs to be moved?!!! No grasp of science at all.

ShanghaiDiva · 15/05/2019 09:35

Agree with MrsPear this is a ban on safe abortions, not abortion and puts women's lives at risk.

FiremanKing · 15/05/2019 09:43

I’m anti abortion but I believe that they should have made allowances for rape and incest.
