My sons writing same age, is waaaaay worse than that. This writing looks fine to me.

cocomelon23 · 13/05/2019 07:45

Why are some people questioning those that suggested 8? I can assure you that my 9 year old was writing like this by 7/8. He is my only child though so I have nothing to compare him to. I assumed all children his age were kind of at the same level.

Fresta · 13/05/2019 07:46

So how old is she OP?

Beautiful3 · 13/05/2019 08:25

OP already said on page one that daughter is in year 7.

coffeegrounds · 13/05/2019 08:29

OP already said on page one that daughter is in year 7.

And myself and several others have said we have no idea what 'year 7' is!

It's ok to ask, so stop being nippy for no reason.

coffeegrounds · 13/05/2019 08:31

School years are plus 5

Year 7 is 12

@GreenTulips thank you! I will use this method from now on.

nowseeherefella · 13/05/2019 10:41

It was written in September and August born so only just 11 years old. Seems perfectly normal for a just-11 year old.

underneaththeash · 13/05/2019 10:49

It’s similar to something my 8 year old would do for content, but her spelling is better. (However, she really struggles with maths).

I’d be asking for an assessment too.

gamerwidow · 13/05/2019 10:57

I would have said year 6/7 so I think it is within normal range for your DD.
You know your child best though can you afford £500 for a private dyslexia assessment? I’m thinking of doing this with DD(8) whose writing is still for the most part unreadable. This kind of writing would be completely beyond her.

locketsprocket · 13/05/2019 11:11

Thank for all the reply's, reports are rubbish as they never have a comment from teacher but we have parents evening in few weeks so will book to see every teachers and speak to them separately.

She a nightmare when it comes to homework no organisational skills at all, she's forever rushing to quickly do something in the morning as she forgotten to do it

8 years old?? You’re all having a laugh!

Hmm Not every 8 year old is the same, but is not unbelievable that an 8yo could write like this. Or even a 7yo.

My 8 year old does big writing once a week and I promise you, the content is more detailed. Yhere is not a single comma here and my DS (year 3) has just learned about subordinate clauses so commas are always included. Lots of repetition in this example too, “Walls” twice in the same sentence, which DS class have covered already. My nephew is also 8 and is in a different school, his vocabulary is about the same as my DS. As I said, his writing is not anywhere as neat as this, but his spelling is about the same.

Davros · 13/05/2019 11:33

DD is moderately dyslexic, we paid for a private assessment. The lack of organisation, leaving things to the last minute are very familiar. Also not being quite sure what is going on or being unable to remember things. If she's like DD, good luck with getting her to read! That is a useless piece of advice if she is similar. DD bodged through with audiobooks, films etc and still does not enjoy reading. Doesn't the teacher know it is "duct tape"?!

WeeDangerousSpike · 13/05/2019 13:44

Duck tape is a thing, it's a brand.

I imagine the red pen is another student peer marking and the green pen is the teacher.

Yes, I can see this being any child from age 8 upward, depending on setting, including high school.

Hollowvictory · 13/05/2019 20:24

Year 3-4? 7-8years

CottonSock · 13/05/2019 20:26

I would say about 12.
7 is a laugh! My dd is 6 and can barely write (Normal for age according to teacher)

asdou · 13/05/2019 20:32

It doesn't make any sense? I'd have thought a 15 year old with severe MH issues and spelling issues. It's all about knives and violence and taping people or cats (who is Fluffy?) to a wall...........?
Hard to make sense of.

If my dd wrote this I'd be a little worried.

asdou · 13/05/2019 20:34

Does she play violent video games or where do the knives and duck tape and taping people to walls and cackling come from?

asdou · 13/05/2019 20:37

Ok, so reading again she 'stormed into the room with her duck tape gun and taped fluffy with hair like candy floss to a wall, then tore her hair out'. Am I reading this right? How old is the child? It's very violent language/theme/scene.

Has she fluffy hair? Has she been bullied? Again I would ask where the violent theme is coming from?

80sMum · 13/05/2019 20:37

I'm an English teacher (Head of English) and the standard of this work is absolutely typical of a year 7 child (age 11/12)

^ I'm pretty shocked by that statement!

I'm wondering whether the modern method of teaching children to read using only phonics is linked to the poor grasp of spelling nowadays.

asdou · 13/05/2019 20:39

OP I'd be less worried about the inability to spell and more worried about the content to be honest. I'd be worried if my dd wrote something like that. It's very angry, aggressive and violent in theme?

What was she supposed to be writing about? Confused

MrsKCastle · 14/05/2019 07:15

There is a very wide range of 'normal' at that age, and a big difference between year 1 and year 2. A 6 year old in y1 might still be at the early stages of writing, although they would hopefully be receiving support and have a close eye on them. A 6 year old in y2 who could 'barely write' would be a concern.

I'm one of the posters who said anything from 7+ for this writing and I stand by it. I have seen much better writing from some 7 year olds. The expectations in primary school now are very high.

MrsKCastle · 14/05/2019 07:19

Locketsprocket apologies if I have missed it, but is your DD receiving any extra support in school? Do her reports show that they consider her to be below expected standards? As well as spelling, she perhaps needs some help organising her ideas. The narrative seems jumbled, rather than a clear story.

MrsPworkingmummy · 14/05/2019 21:29

@80sMum absolutely. I also believe unmonitored use of social media/text messaging etc has a massive impact as children write using abbreviations or slang without any challenge, which then transfers across to day to day writing.

IamPickleRick · 15/05/2019 12:43

My DS came home yesterday talking about the pathetic fallacy. He’s 8. I specifically remember learning that in A Level. How dumb do I feel now 😂

I agree that writing like this is quite possible for an 8 year old. My boys writing is better than this, but not all in the class are at that level, about 6 of them definitely are.
