Does any one have a gravity blanket?

raeray · 09/05/2019 20:01

Early menopause due to cancer, a big bereavement and shift work means my sleep has gone to pot the last few years.
I saw these on Facebook and read all the reviews but wondered if anyone had one and found them useful?
They're so expensive but I'd be willing to invest if they actually work!

Anyone have any experience? Thanks

I have a couple of weighted blankets, which are the same. They are AWESOME. I love mine. Instant nap when I pull it over me.

raeray · 09/05/2019 20:49

Ooh that is one tick thanks for your feedback that sounds lovely!!!
Do you have it weighing as much 10% of your body weight?
I'm a big woman and I worry I'd never be able to move again if I got a blanket that heavy Grin

Also another question if you don't mind?
Are they extremely hot because they are heavy? Compared to a normal duvet on your bed perhaps.

Checking in for reviews because I would really like one!

Also checking in. Considering one for this winter.

Ellegeebee · 09/05/2019 21:01

They are amazing, one of my best friends has one and let me sleep under it when I stayed over at her’s once. It’s heavy and instantly relaxing but not too hot at all, it seems to just keep you at the right temperature. I found it brought my heart rate down to.

Offallycheap · 09/05/2019 21:02

The best way I can describe it is if you remember in the olden days of sheets and blankets, if you ever slept tucked under extra blankets and coats (as we did!) it’s a bit like that.

Personally I think 10% is a bit underweight to be honest, but I don’t use mine as a replacement duvet. Mine lives on the sofa and I pull it over me if I need a nap or if I’m anxious or upset. The beads settle round you so it feels like a big hug. They come everywhere with us and eldest is very anxious and he has his on him in the car.

I also have a weighted scarf and weighted lap pad for my children which also help anxiety.

Offallycheap · 09/05/2019 21:03

Look at Sensory Direct too.

Comefromaway · 09/05/2019 21:32

I’m seriously considering one for ds (asd, pda suspected co-morbid adhd)

UserN0me · 09/05/2019 21:37

If the cost is an issue you can make them quite cheaply with a couple of blankets and some beads or even rice. You’ll find it if you google “diy weighted blanket”

raeray · 09/05/2019 21:45

Ooh ok so is the gravity blanket just a weighted blanket with good marketing?

Thanks for all your replies I appreciate it!

Game changer for sleep here, worth every penny. I don’t get hot and I’m menopausal, it’s very comforting, makes you feel kind of safe and secure.

JaneEyre07 · 09/05/2019 21:59

A friend of mine's son has autism and he has one, it massively calms him down if he gets agitated. So much so that he takes one around in a backpack!

Comefromaway · 09/05/2019 22:05

From looking at the ones on the sensory direct link I don’t think they’d work for my son as he refuses to have more than one layer on his bed.

lolbrador · 09/05/2019 22:10

I love mines. I was doubtful. I'm on medication that was causing restless legs and nerve pain and this blanket has helped a lot.

I got mines from eBay, got the 10% but wish I had went slightly heavier to be honest. I paid 50 pounds.

It's like a cocoon. Dh claims he hates it but I've caught him snuggled under it a few times "testing it out"

raeray · 09/05/2019 22:58

I think 10% will be the heaviest I'll be able to get (until my slimming world works a bit more).

Very tempted.....

Anyone else got one?

Do they ever run offers on the gravity blankets brand?

I am in remission from head and neck cancer, when I was at my most agitated vis a vis sleep I used a heavy blanket from Costco.

It was known as Shep the Sherpa.... Grin

www.costco.co.uk/c/Super-Plush-Sherpa-Throw-in-Brown-Heather/p/1152843B

Not in stock at the moment, but it served its purpose and for a fraction of the cost.

Offallycheap · 09/05/2019 23:11

Comefromaway have you seen compression sheets? It’s basically an elastic sheet that goes right the way around the mattress and the child slides under it.

raeray · 10/05/2019 10:00

I like the sound of shep the Sherpa!
I also love you called it that (it's the kind of thing I'd do too!)

gubbsywubbsy · 10/05/2019 10:11

I have a throw from John Lewis which is lovely and soft and heavy . I sleep so well under it .

raeray · 10/05/2019 20:49

See these luxury throws sound lovely but I think I would probably get too hot under them unfortunately.
What tog (really roughly!) do you think the weighted blankets are equivalent to?

I don't want to splash and then be too frigging roasting to use it!

Pinkarsedfly · 10/05/2019 20:50

I’ve got one. Love it. Like being hugged all night.

Plump82 · 10/05/2019 21:18

How does it work with your partner also in the bed. Id love one. But i want it just for me.

Purpleartichoke · 10/05/2019 21:21

We got one at the recommendation of dd’s therapist. She loves it. I tried it out. It was tiny on me and way underweighted, but it was so blissful I ordered an adult sized one for myself that day. If you are very heavy, like me, don’t get 10%. I went with about 7% and wish I had got a tad lighter.

namk · 10/05/2019 21:24

Don't be tempted to go too heavy, you'll wake up aching all over! Bitter voice of experience here.
