Lying washing machine!

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/05/2019 13:04

I've got a Samsung ecobubble machine, not had it long and still getting used to it.

I put a full load of cotton t-shirts, shirts and underwear on to wash at 12.30pm. I selected the cotton wash at 40 deg. The display said it was going to take 3 hours 10 mins. I thought "that's a bit much but never mind, I want it all to have a good long wash".

It's now 32 minutes since it started and the display says there's only 47 minutes left to run. So that's more like 1 and a quarter hours instead of 3 hours!

Why? Why even have a display in the first place?

I timed my 3h 10min cycle once.

5h 23min.

Angry
Yourenotheonlycuddlytoy · 09/05/2019 13:06

My Gorenje does this. Little liar.

Knittedfairies · 09/05/2019 13:08

Bosch too.

SplashPad · 09/05/2019 13:10

Mine lies too. I think it's because it weighs the load and changes the washing time accordingly.

Sexnotgender · 09/05/2019 13:12

Mine does it too.

I’ll look and it’ll say 3 minutes so I think I’ll hang around and wait and wipe round the kitchen or make a cup of tea.

I’ll finish wiping, look back and the little bastard says 5 minutes.

Dick.

WeCameToDance · 09/05/2019 13:12

My machine does this but the other way around. Put a wash on, checked the display and there was 43 mins left, looked 5 minutes later and there was 48 mins left.
I googled it and apparently the the display is just an estimate. It actually works out how long it takes when it gets going. So if you do a quick wash and fill the machine to bursting point it won't be that quick at all. I don't know how true this is, it's just what I read.

Sexnotgender · 09/05/2019 13:13

Mines a Bosch I should say.

Fairylea · 09/05/2019 13:13

I used to have a Samsung eco bubble. It was the worst washing machine I’ve ever had. I literally just replaced it with an Indesit one yesterday and I was so pleased to get rid of it! Blush

PickAChew · 09/05/2019 13:15

It just adjusts, either depending on weight or the amount of water needed, depending how sophisticated the machine. Shirts are relatively light and floaty, so a full drum would have included a lot of air and not so much fabric to soak wTer up.

The same dry volume of towels would soak up lots of water, probably create more foam while being washed and quite possibly end up with a lengthened rinse cycle, as a result.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/05/2019 13:28

It's now done one rinse and is spinning. So my fairly dirty clothes have had less than an hour's washing time. Not happy! Angry.

My Bosch lies like @Sexnotgender‘s machine.

You get near the end of the cycle (apparently) and it just keeps insisting that it needs 5 more minutes. It’s like a small child who doesn’t want to let you escape from leave softplay.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 09/05/2019 13:33

My Miele does this, I thought it was while it was estimating the load size, as it always reduces significantly if I have a small load in.
I had a Samsung ecobubble before this one and it lasted 11 months, had three repairs and I hated it. It did a bad job of washing and it leaked. Worst machine I have ever owned and I regretted getting rid of the very old and basic hotpoint it had replaced.

I don't think the long wash time necessarily washes better. I think they're so long on modern machines for energy and water saving?

Faster · 09/05/2019 13:34

My Samsung lies too. The last minute of the cycle is always 4+ mins. And it pisses me off every time.

tenbob · 09/05/2019 13:34

Mine does as well!

I think the stupid thing is telling me how long is left of that particular bit of the cycle (rinse, spin etc)
But I have ZERO interest in that. I just want to know when I can open the door
Dick bosch machines

FancyForgetting · 09/05/2019 13:38

Another one here with a lying, time-bending Bosch. In this house, the question ‘how long will x take’ gets a reply of ‘do you want to know in real time, or washing-machine-minutes?’.

BallyHockeySticks · 09/05/2019 13:38

Mine always starts with a default longest time and 90% of the time it cuts it down. It seems to be done by weight of the clothes. Only the very fullest load takes the full time.

I think it's a good thing. It makes sense to me that a small load would wash as clean much quicker than a big load. If I were handwashing, a lot of the washing time is rinsing. It would take ages with a basin stuffed full of clothes but it's almost trivial with just a couple of items. It doesn't mean the smaller wash produces less clean clothes. I don't know if it's the same with washing machines but it feels OK to me.

Spinnaret · 09/05/2019 13:40

Mine adjusts like that as it has some sort of fancy system for assessing how dirty the water is as it washes, as well as weighing how much is in there. So it only washes for as long as it needs. I'd rather it do that than keep on beating my clothes around the drum for way longer than needed. Wastes less water as well.

Choccyp1g · 09/05/2019 13:41

Join up here for the Samsung Ecobubble Hater Club!

Mine is fairly good with the timings, but the creases are unbelievable.

And I hate the jaunty little tune it plays at the end!

Kazzyhoward · 09/05/2019 13:43

I've just bought a Hotpoint that does this. On some cycles, it's remarkably accurate, but on others it's way out. There is one particular setting that says 1hr40mins that actually takes over 3 hours - it's consistent regardless of how much/how little I put in, so it's nothing to do with me overloading it.

We had the Hotpoint engineer out to it and he barely glanced at it - just a load of nonsense about how the cold water supply can sometimes be hotter/colder than other times. To add insult to injury, Hotpoint sent me a bill for the visit as no fault had been found - they can jog on if they think I'll ever be paying it!

It's this new breed of "eco" washing machines - not sure how environmentally friendly it is for a washing machine to run twice as long as it should (my old one would do the same cycle in half the time). I think it's another conspiracy like the fiddled Diesel car emissions scandal.

How I wish I'd just had my old one repaired rather than buy a pile of crap that I'm now stuck with.

Crustaceans · 09/05/2019 13:46

And I hate the jaunty little tune it plays at the end!

I’ve got a Samsung drier. The annoying tune seems to go on forever.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 09/05/2019 13:48

I think the Samsung lies about the longer cycles. If I put it on the cottons programme it says 2 hrs 52 mins and a minute later says 1 hr 59.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 09/05/2019 13:49

I'm sorry but you're all wrong, it's nothing to do with weighing etc.

It's because washing machines use
a completely different scale of time, the annoying little fuckers. Mine definitely uses WMT not GMT. I know this because there is a time delay of supposedly 3 minutes before you can open the door post wash. WMT 3 minutes is in fact equal to 6.5 minutes (unless you are rushing to leave the house, then it's 10 fucking minutes).

They're sneaky little bastards and they're not as funny as the fridge that believed it was the Sabbath (does anyone remember that thread?)

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 09/05/2019 13:50

oh mine is a really obscure make and it it also on a completely different time schedule to the rest of the world

and it has a jaunty tune...I turned it off when it went in originally, just out of spite, but somehow it's become sentient and reactivated itself and I cannot find the instructions

but can i just say...jesuschristmarymotherofgod at 3hours and 10 minutes Shock

BallyHockeySticks · 09/05/2019 13:52

I do miss my old machine. It had this amazing button, which, when pressed, opened the machine straight away if it was within in the first 10 mins or so. Perfect for all those forgotten tea towels etc. Technology eh?

SneakyGremlins · 09/05/2019 13:52

Mine is a Candy make, I should add.
