Putting notes through door of street I want to buy in...

Is this a mad idea. What would you think if you got one of these.

How much detail would you give?

Would you just say if you are thinking of moving please get in touch or more detail?

We've had an offer, can be flexible about moving. The street is nice with gardens and period properties. We would be cash/almost cash buyers with no chain.

That's how we bought our house.

DontCallMeShitley · 08/05/2019 14:42

We had them and it was pleasing to know that people wanted to buy in our road.

Just at the moment I wish someone would drop one through the letterbox because I am in 2 minds about moving to a house I like but am not in a position to make an offer. It would motivate me to sort the house out.

I don't mind them at all.

onemouseplace · 08/05/2019 14:45

I wouldn't mind, and would definitely consider it if there was a particular road we wanted to live on. I would prefer a personal one from an individual buyer. I don't like the lazy estate agent marketing ones - saying that they have a buyer who just missed out on x type of property on our road and are still looking - especially when our flat is nothing like the 4-5 bed house they are actually looking for. Do your research!

LoafofSellotape · 08/05/2019 18:30

It does work because people might not even have thought of selling beforehand. This is also why you often see multiple houses in a street for sale, someone sells then talks to a neighbour about how much they've sold it for and they decide to sell up too.

I cannot understand why a flier through the door would anger someone, seriously, just pick it up and bin it and don't give it another thought. If this angers you then I would suggest you seek help!

SnowsInWater · 08/05/2019 18:45

Sounds like a good idea to me.

We lost out on a flat I had fallen I love with. I wrote to the vendors and said if for any reason the sale fell through please keep us in mind. They did, we bought it; they didn't think we were creepy or strange.

xyzandabc · 08/05/2019 18:54

I did this and would do it again. Probably put notes through about 100 houses in streets that we liked. We knew we wanted to stay in our town and needed X bedrooms with garden and garage, so I targeted streets that were predominantly those type of houses.

I got 5 replies, 4 just wishing us well and good luck with the search. 1 invited us round to look, we said we'd be interested so he got 3 agents round to value it and told us his price. It was out of our budget so we didn't buy but he did sell it about 8 months later.

Ironically we ended up buying in the one road that I didn't leaflet because I thought all the houses in that road would be well over our budget!

Agreed. We've had a couple in the last year or so. We just put them in the recycling and forget about it.

Redglitter · 09/05/2019 06:09

I've had a few since I bought my house. I'm quite sure noones been peering in my windows mind you. I think it's more to do with the fact there are very few houses like mine where I stay. If they do go on the market they tend to sell very quickly, sometimes within days. If I was thinking of selling I'd definitely contact someone whod dropped me a note rather than go via an estate agent

BalloonSlayer · 09/05/2019 07:07

We sold our last house like this.

We needed to move and had had the house valued. However it needed a repair doing to it before it went on the market so we were just waiting for the last bit to be finished before we went ahead.

Then we got a note through the door from someone from one of the 2 bed houses further down the road saying they loved the road but just wanted a 3 bedroom as they needed more room so were any of us in the 3 bed houses thinking of selling? I phoned them up and they bought it.

It's my go-to "piss everyone off with my good fortune" story. Grin

Only on MN do people find the idea of a note through the door "intrusive" and for this to be considered stalking and linked to burglary? Bizarre.

This is a really common practice round our way. Nobody is "targeting" houses, they simply want to live in this street. It's no different from all the other leaflets and stuff we get through the door.

greenlynx · 09/05/2019 08:20

I would expect you to pay a bit more than just valuation because you’re so keen to buy.

Soopertooter · 09/05/2019 08:22

I've done this and don't see anything wrong with it. It can be beneficial to both parties to cut out the estate agents.

ThanksItHasPockets · 09/05/2019 09:20

That’s reasonable, and as the vendor would also save on estate agent fees it could prove very lucrative for them.

Progress2019 · 09/05/2019 09:37

We’ve had these before, and at the moment, when we’re seriously toying with the idea of moving, but need a kick up the arse, a note like this would be a dream come true.
