What do you do on your day off?

My kids are grown up so no childcare now.
It's my day off and I'm messing around and getting nothing done. What a waste, I'm going to shake myself soon.
There's no animals to tend to, just myself to occupy and I'm doing nothing!!! Lazy bugger 😣😣

Day off?!? I have 2.55mins to myself on a Friday, I am supposed to clean and tidy for the weekend invariable I go for a 90min run, make a peanut sandwich and in the last ten mins I do the random critical task eg. Post off family member Christmas present.

Maybe get a to do list and or a hobby?

Asta19 · 07/05/2019 16:00

I'm like you, my kids are grown up. But I'm afraid I also waste my days off! Usually spend a portion of it in bed for a start! I read a lot and do various craft projects. Maybe potter and do a little tidying. I wish I was a bit more motivated.

wendz86 · 07/05/2019 16:05

I have 2.5 hours to myself on a Friday. I usually do a dust and hoover of the house. Also do things like haircuts and nails.

AliciaMayEmory · 07/05/2019 16:05

Today is my day off and I've been to an exercise class at 9:30-10:30 after dropping the kids, home and shower/eat breakfast, put the washing in, did a food shop, went to the recycling centre, hung washing out, picked up kids and now am in the 'quick tea before clubs' bit. If I didn't have kids to drop off or feed I'd be out visiting friends or family, sorting house out so don't have to do it at the weekend, do a short course in something creative, or just sit and read my book.

crosser62 · 07/05/2019 16:07

In your position I’d be wandering around shops, going to cafes, watching box sets, reading books, pottering in the garden, going to the cinema, meeting friends for coffee or dinner, going to shows or concerts, but all at my own pace and in my own sweet time.

Starlight2004 · 07/05/2019 16:27

Yes I'm in the same position some days! My kids are grown with their own social lives. I have dogs to walk so I do that, then maybe put something in to cook for evening meal and stick a load of washing in and do a bit of vacuuming or something but yes a lot of the day feels like wasted time. I do read lots. But don't have much spare money for cafes and going out with friends. I think I need a hobby too!

Eve · 07/05/2019 16:32

I'm beginning to feel like this as well, 1 child at uni, 1 doing A levels so gone soon.

I'm trying to avoid unnecessary shopping and spending so I'm struggling to find things to fill my time. Already volunteer with a youth organisation so don't want to add more commitments, garden is small, DH walks the dog and she elderly so cant walk too much.

Am thinking its got to be the gym but lacking motivation to sign up and go!

REDCARBLUE · 07/05/2019 16:35

I used to be off on Wednesday and so was my friend so after dropping my youngest off at school we left for a mountain walk then a late lunch and home to pick up at 3.

Now I work Wednesday morning so it’s usually hone to clean and my friend goes walking with someone else😔

Hiddenaspie1973 · 07/05/2019 16:35

Cat on lap whilst reading a thriller.
Watching box sets. I've just finished s5. Brilliant.
Gardening.I've been painting the fence.
Blitzing the house.
Rarely, shops. I hate crowds and cba to spend on things I don't need.
I'm restricting calories atm so cafes etc are out.
Mum sent me some free courses (forensics etc) to do.
Cycling now the weather is better.
Admin.....
Take dd to health appointments.
Once these are done, I'll be looking for another pt job to fill a bit of my 2 days off.

Stravapalava · 07/05/2019 16:36

I'm lucky enough to have a few days to myself each week (in school hours.) :

  • Run / swim / do weights
  • Batch cook
  • Do my uni work
  • Mooch round the shops
  • Meet my DM for coffee
  • Clean & tidy
Gertie75 · 07/05/2019 16:40

I work 2 days a week but class Wednesdays as my day off because dd is at nursery so I get 6 hours to myself.

I'm self employed so often end up working the morning then the afternoon is sometimes lunch with Mum or friends, garden centres, shopping.

In September when dd starts school I intend to get fit, I miss running but hate going in the evenings especially through winter.

I also love photography so sometimes go out with my camera.

Longdistance · 07/05/2019 16:45

I don’t really have a day.
In the rare event I do, I’ll book myself the hairdresser and the beautician. I’ll also go shopping as I usually do that all online.
I’d love to do a course in something but where we live our options for that are dire 🙄

RedSheep73 · 07/05/2019 16:52

Officially i go swimming. But often there's something needs doing or stuff to wait in for. I catch up on tv programmes I can't watch when dh is about - I can waste a lot of time that way. I absolutely don't do housework!

BusySittingDown · 07/05/2019 17:26

I drop off at school, go to the gym/visit my mum. Get home, walk the dog, have lunch, make sure house clean and tidy for weekend (my day off is Friday) and then pick up from school.

Sometimes I will meet a friend for a coffee or breakfast/lunch or sometimes go shopping.

The time between 9 and 3 flies though.

FedupNagging · 07/05/2019 17:33

I have a couple of days off a week and love it if I'm on my own in the house (dh wfh a lot & dc's adults)

This is the list of things I do
Yoga
Walk dog
Coffee/lunch with friends
Shopping
Cinema
May waft a duster and Hoover

OR
Lie on the sofa watching a box set/reading eating chocolate

Sometimes I'll waste a day too then suddenly get some energy late afternoon and gets loads done!

Hope you've found some motivation Op

ChandelierSail · 07/05/2019 17:33

What do you want to do on your days off, OP?

If you want to be more productive maybe you could write a list of jobs that need doing.

But there's nothing wrong with looking after yourself and chilling out.

ChandelierSail · 07/05/2019 17:35

Oh and In answer to your question I do the same as you. I have stuff to do and sometimes get it done but often I just arse around.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 07/05/2019 17:35

I have a toddler who keeps me busy but when I get some free time I'm trying to learn about gardening and have been planting some seeds and things out in the garden. I have some wildflowers poking through, which is exciting!

Bookaholic73 · 07/05/2019 17:37

Walk the dogs are browse YouTube mainly 😂

Ragwort · 07/05/2019 17:38

I work part time and have two days a week off (& Sundays); I have a few voluntary roles that I spend time on, I visit my elderly parents, maybe go out for lunch with them, meet friends, quite like exploring new towns/areas. Sometimes (rare Grin) I go for a walk, occasionally take two days off together and go and stay with an old school friend or my brother .... sometimes just do nothing much and catch up with housework and Mumsnet.

Ragwort · 07/05/2019 17:40

For the first time ever I went to the cinema on my own last week, to a 4pm showing, it was great, I will certainly do that again.

Something else I love doing, in the better weather, is to spend a day totally on my own at an outside pool, my idea of total heaven Smile.

Ellabella989 · 07/05/2019 17:40

I often go to the cinema on my day off or i’ll walk to a local coffee shop and take a magazine or my book with me.

YoYoYumYum · 07/05/2019 17:56

On a day off, like today, I would run, swim and have a piano lesson or practise the piano - something to exercise the body and something for the brain. If I had longer, I'd watch documentaries on tv but the kids are back now.

LonelyTiredandLow · 07/05/2019 17:56

I've got a list of things that seems to be continuous - Car: hoovering/filling up windscreen water/taking rubbish out/putting buckets or rugs or shoes into the boot/replacing bag for life
House: Cleaning and hoovering/beds/washing/repainting walls when hand prints or marks get too much/cleaning skirting boards and banisters/organising our clothes and charity run for old or small ones
Garden: planting and gardening/hedge cutting/repainting of fences or wendy house or shed/mowing/de-weeding patio and driveway/pressure washing
If it's fun stuff: reading a book (always gets put to the back but need to prioritise as I have too many unread!)/used to do yoga/meeting friends for coffee or dog walk/get some treatment done if have £ (usually buy eyebrows as mine are blonde)/watch something on iplayer or 4OD. I'd love to do the cinema but everything starts at 12:30 here which isn't enough time to get to the school with traffic. Any films ppl can recommend that I can download? Literally haven't seen an adult film in the cinema for over 7 years!
