Has anyone done a sinus rinse before?

And is it horrific?!

I've got various allergies and asthma and while waiting for an appt with allergy specialists (because we still don't actually know what it is I'm allergic to) my asthma nurse has got me trying lots of different things. She got all excited when I said the nasal spray I'd been using had worked well and said 'ooh I've got something fun for you to try then' and gave me a sinus rinse and a load of sachets.

I stupidly watched a few YouTube videos of people doing it and someone said she felt like she was drowning! She did seem a bit dramatic in general though.

I'm desperate to get on top of this, and I really want to try it but I'll be the first to admit I'm a bit of a wimp!

Going to look into this!

IStillMissBlockbuster · 08/05/2019 20:40

Ok, I have ordered the one you linked to OP. Fingers crossed for miracles...!

The Neil Med rinse was recommended to dc1 (by one of the top consultants in the world in that field), when they were diagnosed with an autoimmune disease which affects and damages the mucous membranes. It does really work, but you might need to persist to shift the stubborn stuff.
Whoever said it is dangerous doesn't know what they are talking about.

I did this with a netti pot when I was pregnant with a sinus issue, on my doctor's advice. It was so satisfying - I had ectoplasm coming out Grin

I think I might do it again. I sometimes get paranoid worrying that my nose breath smells, though I have no evidence to suggest it does Confused

Myusernameismud · 08/05/2019 21:55

I'm just about to do my 3rd since posting this. It's borderline addictive!

Geraniumpink · 08/05/2019 21:58

It’s great - I had sinus infections for 3 winters in a row before discovering it - never had one since!

christinarossetti19 · 08/05/2019 22:03

It changed my life. Well, my sinus addled winters into clear nasal passages joy.

Agree that it can be a bit addictive!

CherryBlossom23 · 08/05/2019 22:05

Neilmed stuff is amazing but I've only ever had gunk come out once when I had an awful cold. Cold was pretty much gone the next day Grin. It does help with my hayfever and stuffiness though.

They are perfectly safe as long as you use cool boiled or distilled water only and clean your device properly after every use. I'd recommend using the prepared sachets instead of making your own mix as it's quite easy to damage your nasal membranes with the wrong salinity.

Sterimar congestion relief spray is also really good, it's basically salt water and really does unblock your nose.

Runningintothesunset · 08/05/2019 22:09

I had the worst sinus infection imaginable when pregnant and couldn’t take any decongestants. Sinus rinse was so amazing and provided such amazing relief. Totally agree on the weird addiction that is seeing what comes out Grin

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 08/05/2019 22:10

I tried sachets but honestly my own mix is just as good

Hearhere · 08/05/2019 22:10

I use my neti pot every morning with warm water and salt
I just use bog standard cheap salt though

Ex28 · 08/05/2019 22:11

ENT gave me syringes to do it when I was having sinus problems. I hate it Blush

Myusernameismud · 08/05/2019 22:11

So on the bottle it says water must be boiled for 5 minutes, does anyone else do that? I have done because I don't wanna get brain worms or whatever Grin but surely it's OK from the kettle?

OP posts:
Hearhere · 08/05/2019 22:12

I just use tap water with a bit of boiled water to take it up to the right temperature

Hearhere · 08/05/2019 22:13

And I have done so daily for more than 10 years now

Babes222 · 08/05/2019 22:20

Just ordered the starter kit - thanks!! I have had non stop sinus issues since moving to the UK 6 months ago 🤧

Myusernameismud · 08/05/2019 22:27

Glad to be of service!
Use warmish water, it feels nicer!

Done my first rinse! Was strange but satisfying. I thought it might feel panicky but wasn't at all. Already feel clearer although one side more than other. Will do again tomorrow. So pleased to be able to breathe better!

TheGoodEnoughWife · 08/05/2019 22:36

I didn't read about the five minutes boiling the water?! I didn't do that but normally 'cooled, boiled water' is okay for everything else so am sure as long as got to boiling it is okay.

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 08/05/2019 22:59

My consultant told me not to use tap water she said there was a risk of infection

SmellsLikeAdultSpirit · 08/05/2019 23:00

I mean tap water that is not boiled

sardinesontoast · 08/05/2019 23:06

Two years of hideous sinus infections, nasal rinses, a hideous gruesome mass ejected from my nose = not a hint of a sinus infection for five years. Best thing ever

DogHairEverywhere · 08/05/2019 23:55

Ooh, I'm tempted by all these tales. Is it really ok to do? Both in terms of does it hurt? Is it like accidentally snorting swimming pool water, 'cos that's horrible. And also, is it safe? It seems like a potentially dodgy thing to do - squirt water where water doesn't generally get squirted?

Hearhere · 09/05/2019 00:03

No it doesn't hurt provided you have the concentration of salt correct, too much salt or too little salt can be very unpleasant in my experience
temperature is also important, it needs to be as close to body temperature as possible in order to feel comfortable
it's a very weird thing to do at first but I got used to it quickly

TheGoodEnoughWife · 09/05/2019 06:07

Not like snorting water in a swimming pool at all although I thought it could be similar too it really isn't. And my gadget doesn't squirt water but rather 'runs' water up one side and down the other.

I am quite bunged up again this morning. Have folk found their nose clearing first time or after several washes?
