"Party" food for a funeral

Spaceunicorn6789 · 06/05/2019 10:02

I have volunteered to sort out the food for DPs grandads wake. We are all just going to DPs grandma's house afterwards and there will be about 20ish people there.

I thought oh easy, I'll just join Costco again as I've been meaning to anyway and get their platters but now I don't think I'm eligible for a membership anymore (used to work in finance but don't now).

The M&S platters all seem to need 3 days notice so I've left that too late Blush any other suggestions?

When do you need it for?

GreenTulips · 06/05/2019 10:14

Try a local bakery
Google in your area someone will be willing as there are loads of smaller companies

CurbsideProphet · 06/05/2019 10:15

My mum ordered platters of sandwiches, wraps, sausage rolls, salad, and little cakes from a local bakery that does catering for a family funeral last year. Could you do that?

Passthecherrycoke · 06/05/2019 10:17

Try messing about with your M&S order. It won’t allow the whole order if there is something in it that needs 3/5/7 days notice ie a cheese platter or something. You should be able to get sandwich platters next day as they are usually in stock. If you can’t work out what it is that’s delaying the order give them a call and check. Had to do exactly this for daughters birthday, it was 20 Colin caterpillars causing the problem!

InTheHeatofLisbon · 06/05/2019 10:17

Morrisons do food to order, not sure of the timings though.

homemadegin · 06/05/2019 10:19

Can you not just renew your Costco membership? If you still have the card number you just do it online and pay the renewal fee.

Greyhound22 · 06/05/2019 10:20

How about Tesco? I ordered some sandwich platters for DS's birthday they were great - they do a veg stick platter as well and then I just did sausage rolls and crisps and things. That would be ok.

DeadZed · 06/05/2019 10:25

Morrison's were brilliant when we used them last year. Really nice food and all ready for collection.

Spaceunicorn6789 · 06/05/2019 10:27

Oh sorry! The funeral is on Wednesday. I have no idea what my costco membership number was Confused I'll have a look at Tesco.

There was a few bakery places who did buffet type food but for 20 people I felt like there wasn't going to be enough food (there's going to be 9 of the grandkids, all 25 year old ish men who can eat for Scotland!) and then if you bumped it up to 25 people it was quite expensive.

Costco have a groupon offer at the moment, so I think membership rules may have changed.

Spaceunicorn6789 · 06/05/2019 10:30

Shit shit shit shit both tesco and morrisons are saying earliest collection Thursday.

He only passed on Wednesday and the funeral was confirmed on Friday and then I was working on Saturday so this was the first chance I've had to look at it, I'm not usually so disorganised.

At least I managed to get the music to the crematorium on time.

Roughly where are you? We use a local catering company at work, lots of short notice deliveries. Basic offering is about £8 a head, I think (and they are generous helpings!).

stucknoue · 06/05/2019 10:31

I do cricket teas - we go to asda (nearest) and buy loaves of bread, ham, sliced cheese, ready made pots of tuna mayo and egg mayo, cherry toms, spread, packet of mixed leaves (looks pretty and is healthy!) we have platters but they sell disposable ones, cling film of course. Then buy packs of sausage rolls, cheese and onion rolls, quiches maybe, etc etc, loads of picnic foods in. Crisps, cakes. Takes about 30 mins to turn it into a spread for 40 ish. Not sophisticated I admit but cheap and popular. Sometimes I pick up samosas from local Indian sweet shop.

Try not to worry, people want something comforting rather than fancy in these circumstances

Elllicam · 06/05/2019 10:32

Could you search on Facebook for catering companies near you?

ElinorRigby · 06/05/2019 10:32

I ordered some bhajis and pakoras and samosas to be delivered from a local takeaway so there'd be something hot. Apart from that I made a couple of large cakes - there was a Xmas cake that I'd baked. (November funeral.) And there was loads of tea and coffee.

If people preferred something more middle of the road, I'm sure a pizza place could deliver....

Spaceunicorn6789 · 06/05/2019 10:35

Very very north of Scotland Smile

I did consider making sandwiches myself... Hmm.

As a last resort I would buy some quiche, salad, French bread, cheese, cold cuts of meat, coleslaw, warm up some sausage rolls, do a simple pasta dish and get some booze in.
Bake / buy brownies for dessert.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 06/05/2019 10:37

Some takeaways do party platters, that might be worth looking into.

joystir59 · 06/05/2019 10:38

Just go to the supermarket and buy a load of stuff

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 06/05/2019 10:39

I'm nowhere near you, but around here Subway and a lot of sandwich shops do pretty good platters that are cheap.

Ginkypig · 06/05/2019 10:41

Have you got a greggs near you? Or another bakery?

A few times now Iv used greggs for sandwich/roll and cake/donut platters for a meeting.

Iceland and supermarkets will have everything you need for the rest of it like chicken legs quiche buffet things but obviously you'd have to cook them your self.

Where are you holding it?

Usuallyinthemiddle · 06/05/2019 10:45

Three full sized pork pies, one full quiche , one full pate (deli counter @ morrisons) big wedges of 2 different cheeses. 5 uncut bloomers, pickles. X

ICouldBeSomebodyYouKnow · 06/05/2019 10:48

Very very north of Scotland
Ah, shame, would've passed on details if you'd been in the central belt, but you're too far away. Hope you get something sorted.

BiscuitDrama · 06/05/2019 10:50

Is there a phone number for marks and Spencer’s? As mentioned they might have some items that can be done on shorter notice which would save you some effort.

Roussette · 06/05/2019 10:54

Mary Berry makes sandwiches overnight... there is how. I've done this and it works!
