Why oh why did I watch EasyJet in the cockpit?

I’m a nervous flier
We fly EasyJet 4 times a year to Tenerife and back and Thomas cook for other trip
We’ve already been struck by lightning on an EasyJet flight
It was mesmerising viewing...but I shouldn’t have done it 😱
Innsbruck ...in bad conditions 😱
Did anyone else watch and now regret it?

Oh and for some reason, I didn’t think pilots experienced the turbulence.
I thought it was only the passengers after the cockpit who felt that 😱

I didn’t but they probably recorded hundreds of hours and only broadcasted what made good TV

Playdoughbum · 05/05/2019 23:36

It makes me feel a bit better- they don’t seem worried about flying at all so maybe it actually IS possible and safeHmm

I always thought it felt safer...than what it actually looked on the programme

It didn’t help that my Dh was saying you shouldn’t be watching this

We don’t fly till October so I have time to forget it
( the cockpit just little, cramped and flimsy...and all those things going wrong...jeez)

Wolfiefan is right, the programmers won't show any good parts. They'll always show the scary stuff.
I used to be an absolutely terrified flyer, but I worked out that my problem was control. I wasn't flying the plane. Once I realised that, I was able to take steps to manage my fears.

SansasSnatch · 05/05/2019 23:43

You can’t be that nervous if you fly 10 times a year Grin

Absolutepowercorrupts · 05/05/2019 23:55

I fly a lot now and I'm ok with it, it's taken time and work on my part to get there though.
The best flight I ever had was about 30 years ago, the cabin staff knew I was terrified, they offered me oxygen because I was hyperventilating. The Captain let me sit in the cockpit as he landed the plane. It was an amazing experience, well before 9/11 and probably wouldn't be allowed now. That's what made me realise that my fear was because I wasn't in charge.

Ribrabrob · 06/05/2019 01:11

I honrstly don't mean to sound rude, but did you really think that pilots don't experience the turbulence as well?! Shock

AutumnCrow · 06/05/2019 01:24

You fly a lot, I'll give you that.

deadandalive · 06/05/2019 01:53

During one very turbulent flight when my daughter was 8 years old and incredibly calm, I asked her if she was scared. She said, No. my teacher said that more people are killed by donkeys every year, than in plane crashes’

Dowser · 06/05/2019 06:06

Ribrarob...I used to travel to Florida four times a year and on one flight, my friend and I were in the back row of the plane and the whole 9 hour flight was so turbulent it really was the flight from hell. I was told you felt it more at the back
I usually sit near the front now , somewhere between rows three and 8 and it’s never been that bad soo reasoned that the people upfront or in the cockpit got a lot less than us.

Obviously I’m wrong ☹️
I only take six 4.5 hour flights now.
That’s enough.

I watched it- the last thing I said to DH as I fell asleep was “we are never flying to Innsbruck” (added to Madeira on our list).

TakenForSlanted · 06/05/2019 07:17

I used to date a pilot who flew passenger aircraft. He was a bit of an idiot, to be honest. Now THAT is a thought I try not to indulge in when I board a plane. Grin

Jellycat1 · 06/05/2019 07:23

Did the pilots aeems woeroed by the turbulence? I'm assuming not - so focus on that. Turbulence isn't nice but it's not usually what causes problems for planes. My bff used to be cabin crew and told me
stories of people hitting their heads on the ceiling and being knocked out/ limbs being broken during turbulence . Plane was always fine though and pilots called it moderate to severe!

Jellycat1 · 06/05/2019 07:24

*seem worried

moonrises · 06/05/2019 08:54

I had to look away at one point. Just confirmed all my fears about flying.

Orlandointhewilderness · 06/05/2019 08:59

My brother is an airline pilot (not easyJet) and he watches in fits of laughter. It's not like that, it's completely over dramatic and it is heavily edited and mountains made out of molehills!

doodlejump1980 · 06/05/2019 09:03

Someone once told me to compare turbulence with the jostling/shoogling about you get on a train. You don’t worry about it on a train? Works for me!

Footle · 06/05/2019 10:35

Well don't read the news today.

Summersunny123 · 08/05/2019 23:24

Silly question maybe - anyone know if there is an alternative to the pilots wearing ties? Can they choose to wear what captain Emma had?
I hate anything round my neck , even a polo neck so would hate to wear a tie if I was a pilot
Could cope with what she was wearing though I think .Can they choose?

ssd · 08/05/2019 23:27

I thought the pilots were really confident and good at their jobs, no need to worry.

Orlandointhewilderness · 08/05/2019 23:59

summer on the airline my brother works for they have incredibly stringent rules about uniform and how you are turned out - including trimming of nasal and ear hair and what you should do with your coat walking through the airport. (over your arm if you aren't wearing it - but no taking your blazer off, oh no!) easyject may be a little more relaxed though.

Orlandointhewilderness · 09/05/2019 00:01

ssd I think if people realised how constantly tested, assessed and check they are then they would be a lot more reassured! Constant full medicals, including blood tests etc, SIM checks all the time and they have to fly a certain amount in a certain period or they get their license pulled,

Summersunny123 · 09/05/2019 05:23

Thanks Orlando . Anyone else know if they are obliged to wear a tie with Easyjet? Or can they choose?

Silvercatowner · 09/05/2019 05:45

You don’t worry about it on a train

Yeah I do. :(
