What would it take for you to become vegan?

A genuine question after a conversation some friends and I were having. They said that they'd become vegan if the ready meals and prepackaged vegan meals were cheaper. It got me thinking, are there any conditions under which you would consider veganism and if so, what are they?

Nothing. Although I could give up dairy easily enough, I'm not that keen on it. But I love meat and feel unsatisfied and empty without it.

ILoveAnOwl · 05/05/2019 17:26

Vegan eggs and decent cheese...

Hearhere · 05/05/2019 17:27

I dont eat any flesh but I would miss blue cheese and natural yogurt for which I have found no satisfactory vegan replacement

There not being a label on something as fundamental as eating, in a society that manages to make us feel guilty about everything that passes our lips, be it because of carb count or clean eating or syns or getting enough protein or the animals. I just cannot be arsed with it all any more.

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 05/05/2019 17:29

The only thing making me go vegan is if animal food products were no longer available.

cantfindname · 05/05/2019 17:35

I could do vegetarian/piscatarian without too many problems, but vegan? No way. I suppose it doesn't help that I can't eat nuts Grin

Runoutofgas · 05/05/2019 17:37

Absolutely nothing would make me go vegan. They spout so much shit about the affect animals have on the environment and have absolutely no regard for the rainforests that are being destroyed to grow soya AND then their carbon footprint in transporting said soya to the UK.
Sorry, rant over!

TowandaForever · 05/05/2019 17:41

@Hippopotas

Haven't checked recently but party rings were vegan!!!

Chwaraeteg · 05/05/2019 17:42

Nothing. I've been dairy and egg free for a year now due to bfing a baby with allergies. I feel absolutely rubbish and catch every bug going (although I have lost a shit tonne of weight). This is despite being under a dietician. I genuinely believe that a vegan diet is very, very bad for your health.

The only way I have managed to get anywhere near my daily calcium requirements while breastfeeding is to eat loads of whitebait. If I was properly vegan I couldn't even do that!

Cattenberg · 05/05/2019 17:43

Thank you Flower777, I will try it.

On the subject of cake, I’d like to assure people there are some delicious vegan cakes out there and you probably wouldn’t be able to tell that they’re vegan. I eat far too much cake, so I should know.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 05/05/2019 17:44

@runoutofgas

The majority of soya is fed to livestock. And plenty of non vegan processed food contains soya ...

It's also perfectly possible to be a vegan and not eat soya.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 05/05/2019 17:46

Somebody was asking about vegan party rings earlier but party rings ARE vegan.

QueenOfTheTofuTree · 05/05/2019 17:47

I also think it's daft to lay all the blame on imported foods on vegans. Pretty much everyone eats imported foods.

WatchingTheWheels85 · 05/05/2019 17:50

I'm a lifelong vegan. I bake constantly pretty much anything can be made vegan.

goteam · 05/05/2019 17:50

Whoever mentioned party rings, they are vegan. I imagine a lot of what meat eaters eat is vegan but they don't realise

goteam · 05/05/2019 17:52

Also whoever mentioned dry vegan cakes, I have just had the most amazing maple syrup chocolate vegan cupcake with tea made with oat milk. You don't have to be deprived.

Ylvamoon · 05/05/2019 17:59

If it was actually healthy and as environmentally friendly as it claims it is.
But as it fails on both points, you need some supplement to get certain vitamins and minerals. And I find the processed and grown far away type foods not very good for the environment at all.

Hippopotas · 05/05/2019 17:59

So to amend my answer since party rings are vegan it’s purely cheese

evilharpy · 05/05/2019 18:00

I’ve tried to give up dairy but can’t find a plant milk I don’t hate, and vegan cheese is absolutely bogging. And I love eggs. If these things could be sorted out... I probably still wouldn’t, but I’d be more likely to consider it.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 18:07

“I will never understand why vegetarians and vegans are so keen on replicating their food to look like meat items, eg sausages, burgers, roasting joints etc”

I don’t understand. Lots of food- meat, vegetarian and vegan is shaped like sausages or patties- it’s just the way we have traditionally shauped food. And also, a lot of vegans are vegan because of ethical issues, not because they don’t like meat or fish and they find it very hard to give it up. So things like lentil or chickpea burgers, for example, which you can eat with all the burger accompaniments makes it a bit easier

goteam · 05/05/2019 18:07

I was a strict veggie for years but loved cheese especially Stilton, strong cheddar etc as well as butter and scrambled eggs. I miss cheese on toast but couldn't do it anymore after reading too much about cruelty to calves in the dairy industry and make chicks in the egg industry. Even in free range / organic farming.

goteam · 05/05/2019 18:08

*male chicks

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 18:08

And people who say vegan cakes are horrible have only tasted bad ones. I’ve eaten some pretty grim non vegan cakes in my time!

OhTheTiles · 05/05/2019 18:10

Vegan food would have to be no longer made of all the additives I’m allergic too.

BertrandRussell · 05/05/2019 18:12

“Vegan food would have to be no longer made of all the additives I’m allergic too.”

It isn’t. Or are you talking about processed food?
