What would it take for you to become vegan?

A genuine question after a conversation some friends and I were having. They said that they'd become vegan if the ready meals and prepackaged vegan meals were cheaper. It got me thinking, are there any conditions under which you would consider veganism and if so, what are they?

Absolutely nothing would.
I was long term vegetarian (now lapsed) but I love dairy and keep my own hens. I could never give up egg, leather products or proper cheese.
I could easily give up meat again though.

RussellSprout · 05/05/2019 16:27

Nothing short of a personality transplant.

I enjoy eating meat, it's healthy, it's what we evolved to eat and I don't want to ever stop eating it.

HTH

PickAChew · 05/05/2019 16:31

Nothing. I'll happily choose a vegan friendly option, if I'm eating out, particularly in Pret where it genuinely is just as appetising as everything else, but I'm not giving up meat, fish and eggs, any time soon and I hate plastic shoes.

Vegan Manchego.

Elllicam · 05/05/2019 16:34

I would consider it if they could make vegan chocolate, cheese and omelettes that were indistinguishable from the normal ones. I’m vegetarian though and have been for 23 years.

TroysMammy · 05/05/2019 16:34

Hell and high water. I'm not the type to blow my own trumpet and force my views on others so on that note - never.

VeronicaDinner · 05/05/2019 16:39

I would never become vegetarian or vegan because I don't want to.

HotChocolateLover · 05/05/2019 16:40

I would NEVER go vegan!

FurryDogMother · 05/05/2019 16:41

Nothing. I think eating meat is perfectly natural - farming maybe not so much. Plenty of carnivorous and omnivorous animals out there - dogs, cats, lions, bears, sharks etc. Eating other creatures is a part of nature, it's what we've evolved to do. We just happen to do it more efficiently than other species. Nature is not kind nor humane, and we are a part of nature. We (mostly) try to minimise suffering, many of us are concerned about our impact on the environment - but veganism is a particularly UNnatural way of life when it comes down to it. I'm more concerned about overpopulation than I am about what people choose to eat.

jackparlabane · 05/05/2019 16:43

Only if there was a total lack of edible animals in the country. I'd raise and slaughter my own pigs and chickens and catch fish and rabbit, if none were available in shops (have killed chickens before).

I don't actually eat much meat - I'm one of those MNers who gets five meals for four from a decent chicken - but I wouldn't want to give up the texture and flavour. I was veggie for five years as a teenager. And raising and slaughtering myself I wouldnt have the welfare concerns that apply now.

nopen · 05/05/2019 16:45

I am vegan. Was veggie for 11 years before.
What did it for me was thinking too much about what eggs were, who milk was for etc.

It was hard at first but second nature after 19 years.

nopen · 05/05/2019 16:47

@TroysMammy
Yet you'll happily follow an untrue vegan stereotype. Yes there are preachy vegans but not many compared to how many vegans there are.

PickAChew · 05/05/2019 16:47

People looking for plant based ready meals check out Sainsburys, btw. Not all their love veg, or whatever it is, meals are vegan but they are bloody delicious and quite reasonably priced. Conversely, I've not found anything particularly good in the M&S vegan range, which seems to be heavily reliant on meat substitutes rather than lots of veg. Two particular disasters, for me, have been the vegan lasagne, which just tasted synthetic and left me with awful stomach cramps, and the katsu sweet potato curry, which has breaded sweet potato wedges that you're supposed to put in the oven for 15 minutes (so you can't even microwave the whole thing) but after 15 minutes, they're still raw and pretty inedible!

JudgeRindersMinder · 05/05/2019 16:48

Hell freezing over might make me consider it

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 05/05/2019 16:50

A proper cheesy cheese. That's my dealbreaker. Could happily go vegan.

KipperTheFrog · 05/05/2019 16:53

I went dairy free for 18 months, it was miserable. I couldn’t go vegan. We’ve evolved to eat meat so I will continue to do so. I buy all my meat from the local butcher, so its locally sourced. I still eat less dairy than I used to...

notacooldad · 05/05/2019 16:56

It wouldnt take that much, amazingthck Greek style yogurt.
This s a staple of most of my meals, savoury or sweet, breakfast through to super!!

MotherOfTheNoise · 05/05/2019 16:59

If vegan cheese actually tasted nice I could probably do it. Ooh, and if they found a substitute for a poached egg. I could not eat meat again (may struggle with bacon) but those are the things that would really stop me.

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 05/05/2019 16:59

TBH? Nothing, not even the threat of global warming, because short of growing everything humans need to eat in animal-proof polytunnels, there will always be a need to restrict the numbers of pigeons, rabbits and deer. I eat all of those quite happily - more happily, in fact, than meat raised intensively.

PennyB40 · 05/05/2019 17:09

I’ve never eaten meat really, I find the thought of it repulsive, much like someone would feel about eating insects Grin
But I could never be vegan unless they come up with some really good dairy substitutes.

Still18atheart · 05/05/2019 17:12

Think it would require most animals becoming extinct. I’d become vegetarian if many animals went on the critically endangered list or I was stuck on a desert island.

CallarMorvern · 05/05/2019 17:18

I spent a month eating vegan. I eat out a lot and struggled horribly, it was very, very isolating. I have always struggled with my iron levels and they got worse.
Now, I don't eat meat, I do eat fish and only eat dairy when eating out ( often not even then).
I don't eat fake meat.
What would make me return to veganism? Lots of restaurant/cafe menu choices. Iron/B12 fortified food. I also hate arsey militant veganism and don't want to be associated with that in any way, took me ages to purge my Pinterest account of all that crap, just because I'd saved some vegan recipes. It's no wonder people are put off.

BikeRunSki · 05/05/2019 17:19

Not having to cook for hardcore meat eaters. I warned them on lentil bake and houmous!

Afrikan · 05/05/2019 17:21

Never. It's the circle of life innit Grin
