Going to the cinema by yourself

Hiya,
I'm considering going to the cinema by myself, mainly because its difficult to find anyone who is free when I have childcare.

Has anyone done this and was it just odd?

I do realise it's not a huge deal

The cinema is much easier than the theatre alone as there is no interval. You’re in the dark, nobody can even see you’re alone, and you can enjoy the film in peace.
I used to find the theatre a bit daunting when the lights come up for the interval and you’re very visible, but by the time you’ve queued for the loo and had an ice cream or drink it’s almost time for the second act.
Once you’ve done it a few times OP, you’ll realise nobody gives a shit whether you’re alone and it’s none of their business anyway. You don’t need anyone’s permission to go to a cinema! Pluck up your courage and have a lovely night out!

I never get why anyone thinks this is in any way odd.

RubberTreePlant · 04/05/2019 21:24

@PaperHead IKR? It makes me wonder how many people all around us are riddled with social anxiety about perfectly normal things.

afrikat · 04/05/2019 21:26

I do it all the time! Love going on my own

bloatedbird · 04/05/2019 21:26

Always!!

SihtricsHorseWitnere · 04/05/2019 21:27

Love it! Such a treat!

Oldraver · 04/05/2019 21:45

Yes just do it. I went to see Dumbo on my own as

a) the others in the house didnt want to see it

b) it killed a few hours while they were at football

LaganOnABubble · 04/05/2019 21:51

I do it all the time

SongToTheSiren · 04/05/2019 22:23

I do this quite often and have done for years - usually if it's something I want to see that DH etc aren't interested in. Why should I miss out on something I really want to see just because others don't??
Went to see Avengers:Endgame for the 2nd time on Wednesday morning and I wasn't the only one 'on their own'.
I find that if you're on your own then no one will sit next to you and therefore you get to have a seat next to you to spread out and put your bag/coat/snacks etc - which is wonderful 😄
My best experience with this was when I went to see 'The Walk' 3D one Saturday morning a few years ago - I was the only person in the screening so had the whole thing all to myself. It was glorious, no other people making noise/rustling/looking at phones etc, just me and the movie on a massive screen 😁

Purpleartichoke · 04/05/2019 22:25

I love going by myself.

Mother87 · 04/05/2019 22:34

Done this looooads of times - LOVE it - totally relaxing/kick my shoes off/have my cinema picnic... blissSmileSmileSmile

UB40fan · 04/05/2019 23:27

I once went to the cinema alone when I was about 22. The cinema was almost empty. I had hardly sat down, bent over to get a snack out of my bag and some fucking creep came and sat next to me. I was very shy and would not say boo to a ghost. I froze and just looked ahead. Eventually the arsehole moved seats. Put me off for life. Would never go to the cinema alone again.

YouBumder · 04/05/2019 23:29

I go on my own loads. Usually on my day off when it’s dead but I’ve been when it’s been busy too

Singletomingle · 04/05/2019 23:37

I do lots of things by myself including the cinema its actually very liberating.

Lucked · 04/05/2019 23:49

I went once as a teenager and felt so ridiculously self conscious but I think it was my age. Have now done it a couple of times since having kids and it is great. I usually have to go to the earliest showing of the day which can be weird if it is a sci-fi or violent film and with those sorts of film I am often the only one in the cinema at that time which makes it even more surreal.

Jaffapaffa · 05/05/2019 08:29

I love going on my own. I have a cineworld card so I end up watching all sorts of things....

Proseccoagain · 05/05/2019 11:32

I go on my own since DH died, it's fine. I tend to go in the afternoon to our local little arts cinema, and enjoy a glass of wine while sitting in a comfy leather reclining seat. No-one one bats an eyelid at a loner. I have just booked to go to the ballet (afternoon matinee) on my own as well. Which I shall also enjoy with wine. And I often eat out alone and love it. Just been on holiday on my own too.

Libertylee · 05/05/2019 11:41

One of my favourite things ever is watching a film on my own. Buy a coffee and big bag of sweets and perfect. Nobody to distract me and can totally escape into it. Don’t worry about others, nobody cares

DulcieRay · 05/05/2019 11:48

Sounds like heaven!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/05/2019 12:39

I always go to things on my own. Don't really have anyone to go with.

BearSoFair · 05/05/2019 12:54

I do it quite regularly. It's great, no one trying to talk to you or nick popcorn Grin No one else will even notice or care that you're on your own, do it OP!

Birdie6 · 05/05/2019 12:55

Sure, I've always done it. No compromising on what you see, no sharing popcorn. It's not a big deal, really.

bevelino · 05/05/2019 12:58

Dh and I often see films on our own. It is a real treat for me.

DarlingNikita · 05/05/2019 13:24

Go!

I love it. It's a real treat. Gets on my nerves when you go with someone and can't agree on a film, so one of you ends up going grudgingly. And/or when your companion turns to you the SECOND the screen goes dark and demands, 'What did you think?' when you're still in the film zone.

cyclingmad · 05/05/2019 13:24

I love going on my own always find plenty of space to sit away from people so I don't have to hear them munching on their food.

Although lately I am rethinking when I go because there are too many people who think its ok to talk during the movie or if they have food can't seem to eat it quietly and rustle their bags to much annoyance. But its the talking that is so infuriating, I went to see Endgame and this girl 5 seats away was doing a running commentary for at least an hour before I had just couldn't take it anymore and had to tell her to STFU (in a poilite way) and got called a bitch in return. UFF!
