And not desperately upset as most of MN seem to think!

OP posts:

Checked my letter, I am a principal. How disappointing, I could have fummed at that.

DatsunCogs · 05/05/2019 14:12

I hate the estate agents favourite 'comprises of'. Makes my teeth itch!

RubberTreePlant · 05/05/2019 14:13

TBF, almost every line of the average estate agents' blurb makes me want to weep.

AliceRR · 05/05/2019 14:14

@Isthisafreename Sorry, maybe that was a bit pedantic 😃

StealthPolarBear · 05/05/2019 14:15

Grass to the frontage

Justawaterformeplease · 05/05/2019 14:15

I have a friend who uses “albeit” as a synonym for “although” - ALL the time

DottieLottie1 · 05/05/2019 14:19

Can't believe it's not been mentioned- Discusting!

Isthisafreename · 05/05/2019 14:24

@StealthPolarBear - that's annoying. Maybe there's something else in the letter you can be fumed about. A misplaced apostrophe perhaps?

Isthisafreename · 05/05/2019 14:26

@AliceRR - Sorry, maybe that was a bit pedantic 😃

Nothing wrong with a bit of pedantry.

AliceRR · 05/05/2019 14:27

I was going to say “yourself” and “myself” but see that’s been covered!

Also “John and I” when it should be “John and me”

StealthPolarBear · 05/05/2019 14:28

I'd have to read it though. And it looks dull.

Macca84 · 05/05/2019 14:33

"John and I" could be correct though, depending on the rest of the sentence.

AliceRR · 05/05/2019 14:33

Confusing “borrow” and “lend”!

“My sister borrowed me a CD player”

Or “imply” and “infer”

“What are you inferring?”

I get annoyed when there is a complete absence of punctuation in a post of a couple of sentences or more.

AliceRR · 05/05/2019 14:36

Obviously 🙄 I meant when people say “John and I” when it should be “John and me”

That is so interesting. In Scotland the phrase is “black-affronted” and is in the OED

I'm from N Ireland so the Scottish using it the same way makes perfect sense. Smile

"The reason people say their DS is ASD, and not has ASD is because they don’t believe it is an illness, or a thing that you have in addition to who they are, they believe that it an integral part of who their child is. So my child has diabetes is fine, but my child is male, is 10, is ASD"

I understand the politics but grammatically that only works if ASD stands for Autistic Spectrum Disordered, rather than Disorder. Or 'is autistic'.

MrsPlesWearsAFez · 05/05/2019 14:57

I'm always disturbed on threads about toileting habits, and people are posting about their 'pooh' Hmm

Was A.A.Milne really writing about the adventures of a talking shit and his friends?

My personal bugbear is "could care less", when a person means "could not care less"

Isthisafreename · 05/05/2019 14:59

True. Just go and read the comments section on any story in one of the tabloid newspaper websites. There'll be plenty of entertaining fumming fodder there.

BlackCatSleeping · 05/05/2019 15:08

Can I mention octopi? The plural of octopus is not octopi. Thank you!

I must admit I do get confused by language sometimes. My boss says I always mix up that and which. The bottle which is on the bench... The bottle that is on the bench... I can never get it right.

I have no idea how people learn English.

SpockPaperScissorsLizardRock · 05/05/2019 15:22

"X is ASD" really pisses me off too.

I have Autism, my son is Autistic. We are not ASD.

My Daughter has Childhood Absence Epilepsy, she is Epileptic. You would never say she is CAE.

Hecateh · 05/05/2019 15:24

learned and taught.

I've tried to 'learn' him to .... but he just won't do it.

He 'learned' me how to do that.

Oh, good grief, yes! That one is always a bit disturbing.

Also "telly" rendered as "tele". At least that doesn't have a lavatorial aspect.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/05/2019 16:34

Blimey we've got this far and no one has mentioned Lose and Loose?

I can't even go on the weight loss boards, even though I could do with the help because it makes me want to claw my eyes out.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 05/05/2019 16:35

To be fair, at least Tele makes sense as an abbreviated word.
