And not desperately upset as most of MN seem to think!

OP posts:

It's pronounced haitch in ROI though.
I haven't seen any mortified misuse on here, I'm always the last to the party...

BlackCatSleeping · 04/05/2019 16:45

Pre-booked annoys me because all booking is done in advance. Why can't you just say booked?

MauritiusNextTime · 04/05/2019 16:46

'Can I also add that “Myself” is a reflexive pronoun and not an odd substitute for “me”. Thank I feel better now'

Isn't it thanks or thank you? Grin

RubberTreePlant · 04/05/2019 16:48

Can I whinge about "aggravate" in your thread please OP?

People insist on using it to mean "annoy" Angry. What if really means is "exacerbate"!

Thank you Grin

Sashkin · 04/05/2019 16:48

The one that irritates me is ‘defiantly’ when they mean ‘definitely’ . Arrrgh!

To be fair that is usually an iPhone autocorrect issue, I have had it happen to me a fair few times and I certainly know the difference. It’s frequent enough that I think twice about typing the D word on here now.

Can I also add that you do not ALWAYS say hsaansnsn and I..... sometimes it it hsaansnsn and me!!!! Arghhhh drives me mad!!! Angry

BlackCatSleeping · 04/05/2019 16:50

How about literally?

As in my head literally exploded or I literally died.

XingMing · 04/05/2019 16:51

I love grammar pedants... and share your loathing for all the above.

GrouchyKiwi · 04/05/2019 16:51

hsaansnsn I once spent an hour explaining that to my boss and he could not understand it. He was a copy-writer.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 04/05/2019 16:53

Nonplussed means surprised and not sure how to act, not unimpressed.

RubberTreePlant · 04/05/2019 16:54

Cue/Queue/Que

Yes!

palahvah · 04/05/2019 16:54

"Work colleague" has become far too widespread. It's tautology!

DarlingNikita · 04/05/2019 16:55

Someone on here once used it thinking it was a synonym for 'bereaved' or similar: I think they were talking about parents who'd lost a child as being 'mortified'. Jesus wept.

LarryGreysonsDoor · 04/05/2019 16:55

Bought and brought are two different words.

BlackCatSleeping · 04/05/2019 16:58

Here, here to all of these! Wink

Can I add "firstly"?

BambooWhoosh · 04/05/2019 16:58

I dislike people using the word unconscious instead of subconcious. Unless they are doing things in their sleep that is. I'm not mortified though.

InceyWinceyette · 04/05/2019 17:00

And the phrase is 'seeing as...' not 'seen as...' .

Radioactivespider · 04/05/2019 17:02

The one that really annoys me is "my DC is ASD." This is purely because it is grammatically incorrect. A person can not be ASD anymore than they can be asthma or diabetes.

I realize that people have different opinions and ideas about the language around disability and long term medical conditions. Everyone has the right to use whatever terms and words they wish to describe themselves. I just want them to use correct grammar when they do it.

Yabbers · 04/05/2019 17:04

That definitely only happens if you are spelling it wrong.

BollocksToBrexit · 04/05/2019 17:06

Many, many years ago my teacher told me I should be mortified for talking in line. I looked it up the a dictionary as I didn't know what it meant. I couldn't understand why she thought talking warranted me contracting gangrene.

cuppycakey · 04/05/2019 17:07

Literally is so often misused it barely warrants surprise any more.

I went on a date with a really gorgeous (English) bloke who used "haitch" - could never see him again Sad

Oh, and Lend/Borrow. No wonder people get into financial difficulties if they cannot understand the difference between these two!

Redshoeblueshoe · 04/05/2019 17:07

Defiantly is definitely a clue in Line of Duty Grin

megrichardson · 04/05/2019 17:08

Also purposely and purposefully
