Really weird parking fine one

I’ve received a PCN (private company not LA) for a car registration that’s not mine. The weird things is, I was in the area that they’ve said which is 200 miles away from my home address.

But, we were in my husbands car so even if the Reg on the letter was wrong, my car was sat outside our house 200 miles away so any letter would have been addressed to him.

Got to be more than a coincidence but I can’t work out how. I’ve called and they said it’s fine, ignore the letter but I just can’t work out how I got a letter for a place I was iyswim.

Hang on - so the letter had your name on it and your address on it but referred to a car reg that you don't recognise. Like you, I'm struggling to work out how that could happen.

Then you add that the location was one you visited in a car that is not registered in your name (but presumably your DH's car is registered to your address). That makes it doubly hard to fathom!

ShivD · 02/05/2019 16:42

Yes! You’ve got it all right.

So we were away at Easter in say, Cardiff and that’s where the PCN is for. The registration is an completely unknown car.

The letter was addressed to me, where we live in Guildford. My car was parked at home in Guildford the whole time we were in Cardiff.

It’s so weird.

The parking company has applied to the DVLA for details using your husband's reg. The DVLA have located the correct address which has two cars registered there. In passing back the details to the parking company they've selected the wrong vehicle.

Massive GDPR fail from the DVLA. I certainly wouldn't be paying this. Bit then I wouldn't pay a private car park 'invoice' anyway.

Ignore. Ignore. Ignore.

Ignore me. I didn't realise the reg was completely unconnected. I'd still ignore the invoice though.

Bubblysqueak · 02/05/2019 16:50

I think this would slightly concern me, could this mean there is a car driving around that is fraudulently registered to you/your address?

Troels · 02/05/2019 17:06

Have you put the info into the computer to see what kind of car it is? Is it even like your car, or a neighbours car? -not that it would have been sent to you still but curious about it www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax
I wonder if there is a way to find out if it is registered to your address.

ShivD · 02/05/2019 17:25

Oh, didn’t think to check the reg. will do that when I get home later.

Someone I know had her details used to insure cars fraudulently. I would be doing more digging about the number plate.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 02/05/2019 17:45

Maybe the parking company gave tickets to more than one person and have incorrectly cross matched the details when sending them out.

peridito · 02/05/2019 17:50

Oh Mother of God this isn;t an extract frrom Line Of Duty is it ? Seems a mystery which is equally impenetrable .

AnnieOH1 · 02/05/2019 17:57

I'd be willing to bet good money that a ticket with your vehicle details on has gone elsewhere. Do you believe you may have overstayed in a car park or not paid? Did you go to that specific car park? Don't answer here just in case (PPCs definitely search other boards I see no reason for MN to be any different). If you did then you've potentially uncovered a major breach for the PPC which could potentially cost them DVLA access. It could also be a DVLA issue as most of the larger PPCs have ELiSA (iirc) database links to DVLA.

If you are in noncompliance with the car park regulations you've already got them on the back foot. The PPC will want you to complain via either of their trades bodies but you really need to push this the Information Commissioner route.

Whatever you do, don't ignore it. Very bad and very old advice.

Troels · 02/05/2019 21:09

But she was in her Dh's car, the ticket would have come in his name, not hers. Her car was at home.

ShivD · 02/05/2019 23:31

I wasn’t actually in the postcode provided but very close, think 15 minutes away. But with my husbands car, not mine. Totally weird,

I called them already and they said to ignore completely, I was just baffled as to how it happened.

The reg given to me is for a car that has a SORN.

washinglions · 02/05/2019 23:49

My Mil had a parking ticket from somewhere in Leeds for a date when she was on holiday in Spain and her car was locked in her garage at home in Basingstoke - and the car keys were on the same keyring as her door key that she had given us to look after when we dropped her off at the airport.

There is no way on earth that car could have been where they said it was on that day.

OnTheEdgeOfTheNight · 03/05/2019 00:58

ShivD- is the SORNed car the same type as yours or your husband's?

ShivD · 03/05/2019 07:17

No, not in any way. Different make, model, colour and year.

I’m going to call the DVLA to ask how my details were passed on.

I’m expecting a letter now with the correct details on like someone upthread suggested.

OP posts:
PotterHead1985 · 03/05/2019 08:28

Sorry if a stupid question but what is SORN? Confused

DadDadDad · 03/05/2019 08:41

It's something like Statutory Off Road Notification. If you don't want to tax it, you take it off the public road, and certify that you have done so. Obviously, if the police see it driving around, you're in trouble.

LilBoaty · 03/05/2019 09:12

That's really odd isn't it.

Heartofglass12345 · 03/05/2019 10:02

You have to declare SORBN if your car is written off or scrapped, it means you aren't paying tax on it so it shouldn't be driven. I know someone who got a parking ticket when on holiday too and their car was nowhere near where they said it was, I don't get how it happens Confused

Heartofglass12345 · 03/05/2019 10:03

SORN not SORBN Grin

Sycamoretrees · 03/05/2019 10:13

Have you checked the number to query the fine wasn't a premium rate number and that's the scam?

DadDadDad · 03/05/2019 10:50

Heartofglass - that's not right. If the car is scrapped (or written off) then you notify DVLA and you are no longer the keeper. SORN is used for when you are keeping your car just not putting it on the road.

ShivD · 03/05/2019 12:20

I’ve got to write to the DVLA as I think the car has fraudulently been registered in my name. Faff Envy
