What do you think of these for a five year old boys room?

We are moving house on Saturday and need curtains for ds's room. He is five and very into dinosaurs.

His room has been painted a sort of turquoise blue colour and mil has bought his bedroom furniture (white mdf which I hate but am trying to make the best of).

Have seen these curtains but not sure if they are really a great choice, dp thinks they are too young for him. I think they are lovely and that he will be very pleased with them, I also like the light colour.

They need to be blackout because he is a very light sleeper, and very early riser if the sun gets in in the morning. The only other option I can think of that would go well is navy blue or cream /white.

I think they're lovely, not too young, he is only 5.

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/05/2019 11:54

If you are the poster whose MIL gave them bedroom furniture then I think these are too cold for the room.

SecondHandTicking · 01/05/2019 11:55

Depends how long you expect them to last. I would say they'll be outgrown by age 7 or 8.

You might consider spending more on a pair made up by one of the online curtain places. They might be double the cost or a bit more, but you could have a huge choice of fabric and pick one that will last longer.

Being too cold for the room and quickly outgrowing them are my two main concerns (yes I am the poster who's mil bought the ugly bedroom furniture).

Would these be better perhaps? www.dunelm.com/product/navy-blackout-eyelet-curtains-1000071262

When my son was that age and dinosaur obsessed we found a set that was a dinosaur duvet, with colour coordinated pillow cases and curtains but they didn't actually have dinosaurs on them so when he got older we only had to change the duvet and not the curtains.

CuppaSarah · 01/05/2019 12:02

My three year old has the bedding set in this fabric. My six year old daughter has been eyeing it up for her room.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 01/05/2019 12:02

first ones are nice but he could 'grow out' of them quite soon, second are just boring.

I think I would hedge my bets and go for the first - DD still has her quite 'young' curtains at 9 and I think she would be outraged if we suggested changing them, I think they will hang on until she hits her teens.

flumpybear · 01/05/2019 12:04

My 7 year old would love these as he loves dinosaurs
You'd need black out blind or equivalent though as they're too pale - we buy ones to fit the recess son it's properly blacked out

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:06

Dp is also saying they are expensive for how long they will last and thinks I'm nuts, we are not paying for them though my mum is buying us curtains (for the whole house) and I think a replacement pair in five years for £30 or so quid isn't the end of the world

SunshineSpring · 01/05/2019 12:06

My 8 year old would like those curtains.
My 10 year old wouldnt ask to have them, but I'm pretty sure he also wouldnt ask to change them, iyswim?

Disfordarkchocolate · 01/05/2019 12:07

I think if you want to make the room warner you need dinosaur curtains with more colour. Plenty out there that have yellows, oranges and reds in there.

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:08

Have no blinds atm but will probably end up with verticals. His room backs onto a field so will be dark in winter anyway, and the sun rises on the opposite side of the house to his room.

Would the first ones not be dark enough even though they say they are blackout?

if they say they have blackout lining then that should be fine, no need for a blind as well - we have blackout curtains in all our bedrooms (and ours is east-facing) and they were a treat - we tuck the bottom of the curtain behind the radiator. IME blinds let in far more light around the edges than curtains but some people are curtain snobs.

What about these or the space ones?

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:17

He has a huge dinosaur wall sticker, plus an ironman wall sticker and avengers bedding. I think monkeys or space might be one too many themes going on in one quite small room

OP posts:
BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:19

That space one is lovely though (he also has space bedding)

There are different levels of blackout. You'd be taking a punt on how blackout-ish they are, and the combo of cheapish and white doesn't bode well, but you could get them and return if not dark enough.

My youngish 10 year-old would be long, long grown out of them I'm afraid.

Catchingbentcoppers · 01/05/2019 12:23

I think they're lovely and not too young, he's only 5.

FiremanKing · 01/05/2019 12:26

If he’s already got lots of dinosaur stuff i would go for blue curtains with a twist

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:31

Those John Lewis ones are gorgeous but a bit too expensive! Also prefer eyelet to pencil pleat

OP posts:
BlueMerchant · 01/05/2019 12:33

I'd go with the plain as they will match his other wall sticker and space bedding set. The dino curtains won't.

BillywigSting · 01/05/2019 12:35

Cloud ones are lovely too but wrong size, only a 50 drop

I have the space ones in my boys’ room. They’re 3&5 and both like them. I can’t see them growing out of them any time soon.
They look cosy, they’re definitely blackout and they’re actually really good quality. We bought some wall stickers of a space shop and stars and bought the matching bedding.
