Anyone had their ear microsuctioned?

I had mine done this morning after 6 weeks of ear infections.

How long after before you stopped feeling dizzy and unbalanced? I am surprised by just how bad I feel I guess I figured once the blockage was gone I would finally have some relief and right now I feel as bad as when the ear infection was at its worst (I know it is only 2 hours ago Smile just very impatient to get better after this length of time of sickness)

On a side note Its the oddest sensation I have ever experienced. Feel something in my ear hear a lot of noise and only sensation was when he tugged out 2 rather large pieces that came loose..

I had my right ear done last month. I’d totally blocked it by sticking an earbud in to clean it which I knew at the time was daft but carried on. It took a lot of clearing and the nurse also had to do the old fashioned syringing to try get a tricky bit sorted.

I thought I’d have instant relief and hearing back but I didn’t. Things still sounded muffled and I felt a bit sore for a few days but then realised I could hear properly.

How long have you been free of infection ?

BrokenWing · 01/05/2019 13:47

I am thinking about getting this done at a local clinic which charges £25 per ear Shock so interested in any stories. I've had severe tinnitus for years, in the last month my ears just feel blocked and my hearing/tinnitus worse than ever.

I'm not sure if they are blocked with wax (left ear is worse than right) or due to hayfever which I've just started getting in the last couple of years and trying antihistamines for.

I asked at Drs who said they look ok so wouldn't syringe, but I have little faith in them as they never noticed a foreign object in dh's ears for several years!

Do you think its okay to drive after having them done?

Strivetobe · 01/05/2019 13:50

For me the dizziness usually subsides after a few minutes. But I've had it done probably hundreds of times over the course of my life so it could just be that I'm used to it now and so my body adjusts quickly?

do you mean syringed?

Enko · 01/05/2019 14:12

No I mean Micro suction :)

I have just realised that I do not for the first time in 6 weeks have any ringing in my ear that is amazing.

Dizziness still there and I feel very unbalanced when I try to walk.

@BrokenWing it cost £50 at the clinic I went too but honestly after 6 weeks of pain and dizziness + hearing loss I am ready to try anything

the guy who did mine said not to drive when feeling really unwell so suggested I leave it 1 hour or so. I sat and had a bacon sandwich and a coffee then drove home.

I used to get mine done regularly by an... ear specialist? because chronic infection caused me to not produce any ear wax - so my ears gradually filled with dry, dead, ear canal skin! The doctor I saw (privately) seemed to get an awful lot of satisfaction from suctioning it out, and insisted on showing me whenever she got a big piece of very thin, white skin out in one piece! Grin I always got the insides coated with some kind of purple stuff afterwards, and would get bits of purple coming out from my ears for months.

It's interesting to read your post, as I didn't even know these side effects. I don't really remember feeling anything in particular afterwards. Maybe because mine weren't really blocked beforehand?

Enko · 01/05/2019 14:59

Yes I suspect because yours was not blocked @WhatNowRandy The guy who did mine said that it is a good thing that I feel dizzy as it suggests that the pressure on my eardrum (where the wax was impacted badly) has been removed and that is what is causing the dizziness as it is suddenly changed and the pressure is different.

Mine cost 80 quid in London for one ear! Think I got bumped Grin

Jaxhog · 01/05/2019 15:08

Microsuction is the new srynging. I had my right ear done last year, so I could try hearing aids. A chunk of wax came out and I could hear much better afterwards. No problem driving afterwards.

It sounds like your problem is still with your inner ear, as that's usually what makes you dizzy. It's possible that the sudden relief of pressure has made your outer and inner ears have different air pressures. Like when you fly. Especially if your inner ear is still bunged up.

Go back and see your GP or ENT specialist.

WeepingWillowWeepingWino · 01/05/2019 15:11

ah, right. I had my eats syringed several times when I was younger, I absolutely loved it, especially looking in the little dish afterwards. Bliss.

Enko · 01/05/2019 15:28

I have a ENT referral for now I am just happy with not having ringing in my ear Grin

I think the dizziness went away very quickly after the suctioning. I was so dizzy and disoriented when it was blocked. The high pitched noise I’d had for weeks also went very quickly too. Jaxhog could be onto something so if you’re still dizzy tomorrow it could be good to let someone check your ears for any problems unrelated to wax.

Thetreeonthehill · 01/05/2019 15:30

Oh crossed post. Glad you have a referral and no ringing noise now,

Enko · 01/05/2019 15:40

This has been going on for 6 weeks I am on medication no 7 & 8 at the moment preventative whilst waiting for the ENT referral. However GP said that they would likely do suction so I contacted a private place to get this done so I do not have another week of feeling sick. after this length of time I am VERY tired of being sick.

Did you have tympanometry done too? Not sure exactly what it does, but it's a funny round device they put in your ear and it measures the pressure behind the ear drum.
There's a good ear suctioner in Wadham we go to and always have good results. I went recently after a couple of dizzy spells. I didn't need any micro suctioning but he did do the tympanometry thing and told me that if the dizziness persisted go to the GP and tell them I'd had it done and it was clear.

Greywind1523 · 01/05/2019 19:14

The dizziness goes away within a couple of minutes for me but it’s an awful feeling while it’s happening. The nurses always say they can see from my eyes when it starts!

I never used to get the dizziness (or don’t remember it being so bad) until I had a mastoidectomy. I think my ENT doctor once said it’s caused by air flow in the bigger void that has been created.

Proseccoagain · 01/05/2019 22:10

DH had his microsuctioned, best £50 we'd spent for ages! Had his hearing back instantly and no problems afterwards.

Local hearing clinic has a free appointment at 4pm tomorrow on its online booking system..... Only does Tuesdays and Thursdays and I can't do next week, really tempted......

BrokenWing · 02/05/2019 09:04

Done it, booked for 4pm today!

Qweenbee · 02/05/2019 09:07

I had mine done at hospital after failed syringing at the gp's.
It was fabulous, effective and no adverse affects.

Baylis · 02/05/2019 09:13

I've had microsuction 3 times and I pay £50 each time. I'm not sure why I get a blocked right ear regularly but it causes me pain and I can't hear out of it and it also gives me tinnitus. As soon as I have the microsuction I have instant relief and no adverse side effects at all.

OP I've never experienced the dizziness you've talked about, particularly a while after you've had it done. I haven't read any updates on your post but I hope you started to feel better?

AliceRR · 02/05/2019 09:18

I had it done and it was fantastic

I paid £35 per ear in Specsavers

So much better than syringing and less chance of infection
